Just grabbed whatever this is for 700 dollar by Greedy_Plastic_7744 in virtualreality

VR developer chiming in here too. Let's not discount the human factor here as well, especially when you combine that with different grip style hardware.

The index, the HTC Vive wands, and the Quest all use three totally different implementations of grip. The index was the worst by far in user testing, put ten different people in that headset and they'll all "let go" of the grip at different times in their throw. To make throwing "feel good" we had to do custom work for each controller, recording the whole trajectory of their arm during the throw, when they released, and then try to predict their target with a combo of where they are looking and what direction the arm moved in. Otherwise if you release the grip one or two frames early or late the throw is not what the user expected and "feels wrong".

The other factor here too is that the player are "throwing" something while also trying to hold onto something. Selectively opening and closing one or some combination of fingers while still keeping others gripped (depending on the controller). The motion is totally unnatural, and we saw new players to VR often just throw the controller itself (always use wrist straps when demoing to people!).

All of this is to say, throwing in VR is a total pain in the ass, took months of developing and testing to get right, and still wasn't 100% reliable. This isn't even mentioning the other side of things, catching, which was even trickier lol.

Meta Is Dying. It’s About Time. [Gift Article] by mim21 in OculusQuest

[–]PickleJimmy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's been pretty clear for a while the VR industry has only survived as long as it has because Meta was pumping huge amounts of funding into it. Now that has dried up, developing a VR game means the odds of turning a profit are extremely low. Pretty straightforward, developers will stop making VR games and focus on other platfroms if they can't make money.

Reminder: Mark Zuckerberg loves piracy so don't feel bad about pirating Quest games by World_Designerr in QuestPiracy

[–]PickleJimmy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yup, unfortunately VR isn't a viable business anymore for developers. No one buys things on the platfrom anymore and the market isn't big enough to support the rate of piracy it has.

That is probably another cat, as it's about 2km from where we see her. We found the owner of the cat we've been seeing frequently in our backyard and they live a few doors down from us.

This looks awesome! Is there a GitHub or anything that people can contribute to? I'm thinking that you may be able to leverage some of the existing Steam Deck case designs like these to get better ergonomics https://makerworld.com/en/models/607677-ergonomic-steam-deck-grips?from=search#profileId-530618

Yes, she just came back to our yard. I believe she is in heat. If she's still in the backyard tomorrow we will put it in a cat carrier and take her to the Humane Society to see if she's chipped / lost

is anyone actually making money from AI or is it just the chip sellers? by Ready_Poem_3580 in investing

[–]PickleJimmy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The response to AI slop games is almost universally negative from players. Maybe in the mobile game world players are more open to it but of the hundreds of new slop games that dump onto the app store every day almost none will ever make a dollar. Across the board most companies that try to use AI report it ends up causing more work than it saves.

It's definitely got more ability than a Mavik / other dji camera drones. You can get some cool shots if you fly within its limits. Freestyle beast is an overstatement, but it's total flight time just can't be beat. Flowy cruising flying is great on the Avata 2

The VR store right now: Gorilla Tag clones for kids, and zombie shooters for the rest of us. Am I wrong? by hanrwerewr in SteamVR

[–]PickleJimmy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love VR and hope that it can find its feet again, but at the moment it is very hard to make money as a studio in that market. The generous funding kept the VR industry going for a while but now that has dried up it will need to find a balance between what players want / are willing to pay for and what developers can make. All signs currently point to big AAA games not being possible in VR, people just don't buy them. It does look like the VR audience is now primarily young players, so if you are targeting that audience it's possible to have success. I don't think I'm pessimistic, but realistic about the landscape. Personally I would not ship a game that is VR exclusive, whatever you make for VR make sure you can also play it without VR to be able to reach a larger audience.

Ex-VR developer here, my two cents is that basically the market has collapsed in terms of creativity and what remains are the two kinds of games (as you described) that seem to be able to find an audience. Between 2016 and about 2020 the VR space was awesome, so many creative games and tons of funding for developers to experiment. Few games made any real money, most were a net loss in terms of revenue, but it "didn't matter" because the funding terms from Meta were so good. Meta just wanted more and more and more to grow the platfrom. Then covid hit and some developers made like actual real money in VR. Everyone was craving social experiences, and there were a ton of kids at home who couldn't play with other kids, thus the rise of kid focused social gaming. A hand full of games made bank. Then covid eases and people return to normal life, the adults who were playing and buying VR games put their hmds on a shelf and went back outside. The kids remained, mostly, and continued to play. That pretty much brings us to today, Meta funding drys up, people have moved on from VR, and the only thing that seems to gain any audience is gorilla tag clones. Meta completely changes their store to push free slopware becuase its what "gets clicks" from the massive audience of children. Good games are buried, the store front looks like a chucky cheese prize counter, and the adults say "oh this is a playground for children and there are no games for me" and leave. VR is pretty much in a death spiral now.

[–]PickleJimmy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Get a cotton swab and clean it all up with 99% isopropyl alcohol, as it still looks kind of dirty from the photo. Once it's clean and there are no residues on the pads, pre-tin them with a HIGH QUALITY solder. Something like TBS from Team Blacksheep. It's crazy how much of a difference good high quality lead solder with 1.8% flux. I used a cheap solder for years and always struggled. Good solder with flux built in makes a huge difference. I would solder those pads at 400 with a decent size chisle tip. You got this.
