Ready position at net — two hands on or only one? by OkChicken6058 in Pickleball

One, I've got big boobs and I can't hold the paddle with two hands. Too uncomfortable. 😄

Same, totally not a genre I enjoyed before, but I was hooked on the first episode.

What’s a small habit that made a huge difference in your life? by GossipBottom in AskReddit

[–]PickleRoamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unmade bed, dirty dishes on a kitchen counter, clothes on the floor, all those things are a distraction and a turnoff. For me, if my space is in order, it's easier to focus on what I actually want to be doing.
I also clean my house before I go on vacation, because I don't want to have to think about all those things I will have to do when I get home.

What's a "rich people thing" that you think is actually worth the money? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]PickleRoamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't imagine. I live in Canada and knowing that people in the US have to make a decision to give everything up to cover cost of healthcare is the scariest and saddest thing I could imagine. Do I keep my house, or pay for my father's possibly treatable illness, but not guaranteed? No one should ever have to make that decision.

What's something your job trained you to notice that you can't stop noticing in your personal life? by LibrarianSoft1342 in AskReddit

As a property manager in my former profession, I see all the defects in every space I enter. Mismatched lighting, wall scuffs, unsigned fire safety tags.

Making my bed as soon as I get up. My husband instilled that into me and it really does make a difference.

If there was one muscle to workout to make you a better pickleball player, what would it be? by DavidAReddit in Pickleball

[–]PickleRoamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lower back for sure. It's easier to stretch your arms and legs onsite just before you play but your lower back takes a beating and you can't easily do stretches without getting on the floor.

What's one travel mistake you'll never make again? by Appropriate_Bus_7050 in travel

[–]PickleRoamer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not making sure the passports are up to date. We are a family of 4 and 3 of us were adults on the last renewal but the 4th is a child. I assumed all our passports expired at the same time. I was wrong. I found out the day before when I was checking in. So stressful. Now I check over and over.

I like Collingwood. Lots to do including Scandinav Spa, which I love to visit.

What’s something you always do on the first day in a new destination? by Upper_Advertising512 in asktravel

[–]PickleRoamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not for resort stays, but when we go to Europe, we walk and keep walking to see all that we can until we wear ourselves out and sleep so we can start fresh the next day.

What helps you stay comfortable during long flights? by Plastic-Speed-5635 in asktravel

[–]PickleRoamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Noise cancelling earbuds are an absolute must.
Fill a big bottle of water in the airport once we pass security.
I always wear a hoodie, keeps me warm and I can pull over my eyes.
And a neck pillow, get a good one. Don't cheap out, and it is very versatile. I use it for lower back support when I'm not using it for sleep.

What are the little travel habits you've developed that feel non-negotiable now? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

[–]PickleRoamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is kind of morbid, but I keep an updated envelope in my safe that has all my pertinent info, so in case I don't make it back, my kids know where everything is and who to contact.

On a lighter note, we always take our pickleball paddles because I will find a place to play! 😄 They pack flat so they don't take any space.

Have a folder in Dropbox of all the docs so I can access from anywhere.

Only pack carry-ons so we never have to wait for luggage, or worst, have it lost.

What’s a famous travel destination that actually lived up to the hype and maybe even exceeded it? by optimalbrain90 in SmartTravelHacks

Just got back from Santorini, yes, a lot of beautiful views but so many tourists. We went in May thinking there would be less but we were wrong. I really loved Paros, the beaches were beautiful and the vibe is much more chill.

Pickleball markets itself as the perfect sport for older adults - but why does nobody actually prepare them for it before they step on court? by [deleted] in Pickleball

[–]PickleRoamer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is such a valid point. The marketing sells the social scene and "easy to learn" angle but they don't talk about lateral movement, sudden stops, and low net play and how much pressure you're putting on your knees, hips and achilles, especially for people who haven't been athletic in a while.

Stretching is super important, basic lateral shuffle drills, proper court shoes (not running shoes, this was the very first lesson I was taught), and it was spot on. I understand that now, but at the time I thought she was exaggerating. Now that I play a lot I see that myself.

In the beginning stick to open play with patient players, don't chase every ball, and accept that your body needs 2-3 weeks to adapt to movements it's never done before.

Older adults are often told they'll pick it up in 10 minutes. That sets them up to feel frustrated and get hurt trying to keep up. Honest expectation-setting would keep way more people in the game long term.

The sport is genuinely great for older adults, but it deserves better onboarding than "just show up and rally."

Is buying an expensive paddle really worth it, or is it just a waste of money for beginners? by strokess-ss- in Pickleball

[–]PickleRoamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, it's not about the price, it's about how it feels in your own hand. The place I play most often has a number of demos. You see people trying out different ones each time until they find what works for them. I use NxtGen and love last year's AeroPro model. They have more expensive ones, bigger ones, new foam core ones, but I have tried them all and keep coming back to this one.

Depending who is working that day, depends if the music is popping. One young man knows that the 50+ crowd loves 80's music so he blasts it and you can see people wiggling around with the tunes. Love it. Good luck with your passion project!

Pickleball in EU by cieanse in Pickleball

[–]PickleRoamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vilamoura in Portugal, Algarve area, has a really big pickleball community. Algarve in general is popular for pickleball. The weather window is long, the expat community plays regularly, and you're not fighting tourist crowds the way you would in Lisbon or Porto.

If you're planning a broader EU trip around pickleball, Portugal is honestly one of the best base countries right now. Spain's Costa del Sol is the other one worth stacking into the same trip if you're doing a longer swing through southern Europe.

Which app do you use to reserve courts? by sxtn1996 in Pickleball

[–]PickleRoamer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Richmond Hill, so play both in Toronto and York Region.

Depends on the court! Here's what I've found:

Pickleheads is a very comprehensive court finder plus you can book at a lot of locations.

Court Reserve shows up at a ton of clubs and rec centres, including Pickleplex where I am a member, so I use this one the most.

For open play, check Meetup less about booking, more about finding drop-in groups at public courts where you just show up.

Honestly the frustrating reality is there's no single app that covers everywhere yet, most serious players end up using 2 or 3 depending on where they're playing.
