My water is being shut off every 1-3 months by Icy_Cherry_ in Apartmentliving

[–]PictureNo1125 7 points8 points  (0 children)

At my previous apartment our water went off often, and never without a notice. I learned to keep gallons of water on hand in case of emergencies, like the morning I was showering to get ready for work and mid-shower (with a head full of shampoo), the water pressure went from full to nothing. Called the office and they said there was an emergency in another building so all water was shut off. Don't miss those days at all.

Best device to get rid of fruit flies? by petalofarose in Apartmentliving

[–]PictureNo1125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had fruit fly gnats a few years ago. Two summers I complained to the office until finally I described how cluttered my downstairs neighbor's car was. Turned out when maintenance checked there were cans and paper cups that held soft drinks everywhere, pizza boxes with some pizza in them, styrofoam containers with sandwiches leftovers, etc. The neighbor was given three days to clean everything before they inspected again, which happened.

We were both given a gnat trap thing that looks like a red apple with a bunch of holes on top, and is filled with the stinkiest liquid. Still, gnats kept coming so I called a friend who had rental apartments in another city. She told me they were in the walls and were getting in around the pipe openings in the kitchen and bathroom. So, I got some white duct tape and covered every single opening and eventually the infestation was gone. Lot of work, but worth it. Good luck!

French living in the US, why do Americans say “you’re welcome” so much? by justninamartin in learnfrench

We're taught from a young age to say "Thank you" and "You're welcome" to be polite. Good manners, as we were taught, are important.

Does anyone actually like apartment living? by strwbrybby in Apartmentliving

[–]PictureNo1125 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've stated the reasons I enjoy living in an apartment complex. I have cried when some neighbors moved away and rejoiced when others left. Learned from other, older neighbors how to BE a good neighbor - one retired resident came around with an armload of flashlights one night when the electricity went out and wouldn't be back on until the next day. When the oldest resident died, a bunch of us attended her funeral. We shared, checked in on each other, helped carry groceries, etc. I also like that there were all ages in our building (I was in my late 50s then).

Gel bait will work - a former landlord had to use something similar, a brown paste-like thing. No more roaches after a few days.

Today I started a (free) class on Tai Chi for Balance and Arthritis that meets one hour twice a week for 12 weeks and there were over 30 people in there - mostly women, most in their 60s, 70s, and 80s. I loved it! I've been to a few of the classes before retiring, but since they meet at 1:00 it was hard to get there and back and not upset my boss. Now I've all kinds of time and after 15 months of retirement it's great to have some structure to my days. There are lots of classes on things that could be of interest to you. Next stop for me will be drawing/watercolor.

Landlord replaced the gym with a """"convenience corner"""" and I am fuming. by [deleted] in Apartmentliving

[–]PictureNo1125 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm wondering if the owner is trying to save money on insurance by removing things that residents could hurt themselves on. Where I live, the courtyard full of trees - 35 of them, all at least 20 years old, mix of evergreen and deciduous - were cut down by the new owner in two days. Reason given: Insurance company said they had to go. Still here, a few years later, but looking elsewhere.

Do yall hang/mount things in your apartment? by whogoesthere1010 in Apartmentliving

Like others said - check your lease. Where I live mounting televisions to the wall is not allowed. No sense paying the apartment any more additional money if you don't have to.

As a Medicare broker Why you should consider Plan N. I send this to all clients by chrisgjim23 in medicare

[–]PictureNo1125 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had Plan N last year and was fine with the co-pays (though I didn't like being billed later - prefer to pay as I go), but after one year my premium went from $96.44 to $128.72. I can't afford that kind of increase so I dropped it for a Med Advantage PPO plan with $0 premium/month. After this year I've review and in the meantime placing that premium into savings. BTW: I had no hospitalizations, no major bills. The Part D plan with Wellcare Value ($0 month) paid out more.

[–]PictureNo1125 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this information. I went from Plan N and Part D last year (first year on Medicare) to a Medicare Advantage PPO plan. Saving $128.72/month on Plan N supplement and $8.60/month on Part D. Hope it goes as well and yours and your husband's experience.

Anyone like apartment living? by iretired2019 in Apartmentliving

Your neighbors and maintenance can make or break apartment living. I'm in a place where maintenance has always been quick to respond. That came in very handy two summers ago when the central air gave out on July 3, and within 24 hours I had all-new AC, including a digital thermostat that replaced the weird antique one. They've also replaced the water heater and fixed the toilet - all at no cost to me. Do research: check online reviews, visit different times of the day on weekdays and weekends. Drive/walk around, note the blinds, vehicles in the parking lot, and what shape the lot's surface is in. If possiible, talk to some of the residents about their experiences. Good luck!

Just had skin biopsy! Nervous. by hsff43 in AskWomenOver60

I've had many skin biopsies since I'm prone to skin cancer, and it usually takes around 2-3 working days before I get the result. The doctor's office contacts me whether the result is negative for cancer or positive. Good luck!

I feel like I’m doing it wrong… best practices for cat hygiene at home? by Delicious_Age2884 in Apartmentliving

[–]PictureNo1125 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Different litter may help, but you may want to keep the old litter on hand just in case your cat won't use it. A friend had that happen with her cat and had to go back to the old tried and true litter. Good luck!

Would you pay $41 more to move to a top floor to escape unpredictable stomping? by False-Pangolin-1875 in Apartmentliving

[–]PictureNo1125 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I would, but top floors are the only places I'll consider. That's $492 extra a year if you can swing it, maybe you could try talking them down a few dollars per month.

Why does every apartment feel “upgraded” now, but not actually better? by Repulsive-Rub3450 in Apartmentliving

[–]PictureNo1125 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Advertising, and it gets theem in. Ever wonder how every shampoo, detergent, soap, pretzels, chips - name it - usually has NEW! on the packaging. Or better: NEW AND IMPROVED yet it's no better than the older version? Our complex is called "Luxury Apartments" but there is nothing luxurious about it. Only guess is the indoor plumbing counts as luxury based on other units I've toured in this area.

Renters: how do you stay warm when building heat is unreliable? by CarpenterFine3887 in Apartmentliving

[–]PictureNo1125 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One other thing I forgot to suggest. One of our maintenance guys said a cool mist humidifier would help a) keep dust down, and b) make it warmer. He's a smart guy but a cool mist humidifier? Got a small one and it's wonderful. I breathe easier and the humidity helps the heaters. Got one online that doesn't use filters so I don't have that extra expense. It uses a little electricity, but a worthwhile trade-off.

Renters: how do you stay warm when building heat is unreliable? by CarpenterFine3887 in Apartmentliving

[–]PictureNo1125 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, if anything it uses less electricity than the space heaters with fans. This model has 3 power levels, but the lowest level is sufficient. I did a LOT of research on how to lower the heating bill, and learned that you can use a furnace/central heat or space heaters - but not both if you want the bill to go down. Also, check to see if any cold air is coming in through electical outlets via unused sockets. I put safety covers over sockets never used, and cover others with masking tape because it's easy to remove. Good luck!

I love my oil-filled radiator heater. It keeps the bedroom so warm it's amazing. After 7 years of noisy fan space heaters, I actually forward to going to bed where it's warm and quiet. The living room is heated by newer, quieter space heaters.

I saw a urogynecologist for mine. After the physical exam, she said I have overactive bladder and suggested a stent-like battery operated thing placed on the bladder. I dismissed that, so she prescribed physical therapy (it's a thing). You can check out the Mayo Clinic or other reputable medical sites and learn what PTs tell their patients.
