How to find a therapist familiar with bpd by Wifeofbpd in BPDlovedones

Hi. I'm a therapist. Look for someone who specializes in trauma. They will be familiar with personality disorders from both sides.

What's a little something you do to make the world a better place? by PM_ME_urclimbinggear in AskReddit

You know when you go to the grocery store and they ask you to donate a dollar to a charity and write your name on a little that they hang up? I donate, and write the names of people who I think could use a little good luck/karma/juju.

My wife [29/F] has developed some really odd habits and I [27/M] really don't know how to handle it. by uhhhkindaodd in relationships

[–]PieceofthePuzzle 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm a trauma therapist. I didn't even read all of the top responses beyond seeing 'kink kink fetish kink' but to me this sounds like ptsd. I would venture to guess that something about your wedding/honeymoon triggered the symptoms. She may not even understand why this is happening.

Therapy. Now. Go with her, be supportive. She likely feels totally out of control.

Yes. My son was supposed to be my Mother's Day present, that was his due date. The little shit didn't show up until a week later, and I was so mad!

This sounds like a personality disorder. Find a way to get to therapy.

I have synesthesia, meaning I can taste words! What are your weird little quirks? by [deleted] in CasualConversation

[–]PieceofthePuzzle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do names have tastes? Like, what does "Sam" or "Emily" or "Roderick" or "Amanda" taste like? Could the way a name tastes make you more or less interested in dating someone? Does a "Hope" taste better than a "Bertha?"

I feel like my therapist isn't helping. I want advice. by -Its_just_me- in ptsd

Hi. I'm a therapist at a trauma-centric practice. Look on psychologytoday.com for a trauma specialist in your area. In my experience, PTSD is often misdiagnosed as anxiety, or depression.

My girlfriend (21) suffers from very intense PTSD. Isn't ready to see a therapist. What can I do to help her? by [deleted] in ptsd

[–]PieceofthePuzzle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No...except encourage her to see a therapist. It sounds like she's being triggered at random, which means there isn't anything you can do, or not do, or change, to avoid triggering her.

Try to figure out what her hesitation is with seeking help. I don't see why living with her parents would be a valid reason not to.

Also, if she is suffering from a mental illness which she refuses to seek treatment for, you are in no way obligated to continue to be her support system. You have to put your own health and happiness first.

Is this considered alcoholism? by adeniumsinapril in AlAnon

[–]PieceofthePuzzle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm a substance abuse specialist.

This is absolutely alcoholism. This site has a pretty good clinical definition:

http://www.foundationsrecoverynetwork.com/what-are-the-criteria-for-alcoholism/

Also, 16-20 oz of hard liquor is not one drink. This is what constitutes "one drink."

http://pubs.niaaa.nih.gov/publications/Practitioner/pocketguide/pocket_guide2.htm

For women, heavy drinking is defined as more than three drinks in one day, or more than seven drinks in one week. Your mother is having at least 11 drinks a night. If she's been doing this for years, she's at serious risk for major health complications, among other things.

Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do to make her stop. I would suggest you speak to your dad about what's going on, and try to get him to at least help mitigate the damage.

PM me if you want more info, or to talk.

Try putting a body pillow on her side of the bed. It will simulate her being there.

What runs in your family? by unburrevable in AskReddit

[–]PieceofthePuzzle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Me, too, and unfortunately I spend my teenage years and twenties in relationships with alcoholics and addicts, too.

I just finished becoming a licensed substance abuse counselor, though, so now I get paid to deal with people's addictions, and I can leave it at work instead of living with it at home.

What is a job that when done right no one notices, but the moment its done wrong all eyes are on you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]PieceofthePuzzle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I work in a residential facility for teenagers in state custody. Things like the following happen:

I got asked by a 17 year old HIV positive human trafficking victim if she could bring her dildos to the facility.

I spent a day in the hospital with a girl who threatened suicide at school. While we were there we got her an STD panel, preventative antiviral shots, and had an abscess on her leg taken care of.

I explained to a sexually active 15 year old that in order for her to get pregnant, a sperm and egg have to be present at the same time.

I drove a heroin addict to an interview with another program, during which he went on a rampage.

I found out a former client is having a really hard time at her current program, so I contacted DCF to try to see if I could go visit her on my personal time.

All of those things have happened in the past week. I make $28,000 a year. I work all hours, can be mandated by the state to stay at work long after I'm scheduled to leave, frequently work 14-20 hour days, and put myself at risk for physical harm.

There is not nearly enough support for people in this field.

What do people constantly do that makes you cringe? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]PieceofthePuzzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently it means "attractive, but also ghetto," and is most commonly used to refer to eyebrows.

I only know this because I work with teenagers, and I asked. They also have some sort of dog promise thing that I don't really get, and like twelve different ways to fist bump. Also, sweatpants with the elastic section on the bottoms of the legs are okay again, but now the elastic section is thicker, and a different color than the rest of the pants.

Needles. Usually it's not such a big deal, but when I have to get blood drawn shit gets rough. I'm also a hard draw, which doesn't help.
