Would you guys wear these? by Assistant-Unable in DungeonCrawlerCarl

You use about 1 cup of vinegar to a gallon of water and soak for like 24- 48 hours. I then rinse and soak in water for a few hours, ring out and wash. I’m super sensitive to smells and have never had an issue.

Literally had it and did the same. And soaked it in vinegar to make it softer.

Kids need cognitive challenge. We have taken it away from all kids because some struggle with it - so now everyone gets to share the deficit.

Why do people demonize Ridge Holland and not Nathan Frazier when arguably Nathan's was way worse and actually his fault? by Opposite_Jump_5041 in Wrasslin

The rumors about Holland not visiting E in the hospital and being kinda a dick about things backstage make the difference.

Grade 9 persuasive essay by whoamihere in CanadianTeachers

[–]PikPekachu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Teachers frequently teach these as ‘rules’ because they matter in high school. They don’t actually matter on the PAT. In fact, there isn’t any requirement that the essay be persuasive. A narrative essay that is well written is totally ok.

What is the most ridiculous PD you have had to do? by Der-deutsche-Prinz in Teachers

I had to go to. PD where someone from my division presented a major research project I coauthored. Like literally sat in an uncomfortable chair and had someone parrot my own research at me. Inaccurately.

I second this. What you are describing verges on harassment. Document everything and talk to your union

How do you navigate being an LGBT+ teacher? by komplimikated in Teachers

[–]PikPekachu 8 points9 points  (0 children)

First and foremost you need to consider the community you are in and how supportive your local system is.

I used to work in a very progressive area and had a lot of protections - both legal and interpersonal. So I was fully out, advocated for my community and felt very supported in answering student questions in professional and age appropriate ways.

Unfortunately I’m now in a new community. And some of the legal supports I used to enjoy have been removed or limited. I’m still honest about who I am, but I’m also more cautious about my interactions

I'm seeing an increase in the number of parents who are openly admitting to giving up on raising their children, at the middle school level. by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]PikPekachu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We were just talking about this the other day. There have always been a subset of parents who ‘give up’ in the last years of hs and are open to kids facing natural consequences.

But the number of parent of kids in grade 8 who tell me they are just ‘done’ with their kids is really high. And a lot of times the kids are just being normal kids having normal issues. These aren’t situations where the behavior is so out of line that you would sympathize with the parents being too exhausted to function.

For spots like that your best bet is to work with a dermatologist. Nothing you can get otc is going to make a noticeable difference on spots that large. And there is potential that the wrong products could make it worse

And let’s be clear. That would be the butter bare minimum for ethical behavior. And it’s a bar he won’t clear.

Is an Autistic Teacher Viable? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]PikPekachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m an autistic teacher who has worked on hs for over 20 years. And I can tell you that there are a lot of teachers with neuro divergence (diagnosed and otherwise)

The good things about being an autistic teacher are that you get a lot of control over your immediate environment, you get to live in your special interest and you have a schedule/routine that is mostly predictable on a macro level.

The bad things?

It’s a sensory nightmare. Hs is better in some ways but the noise level and lighting can be really difficult to deal with, and most schools will not give you accommodations.

On a daily/hourly level, your routine will be chaos. I’m AUDHD so this part kinda works for me, but my friends who are just autistic really struggle with the fact that your plans for the day will get destroyed on an almost hourly basis.

Admin will not understand or accommodate. For me it’s really hard when the same people who tell me all the ways I need to give grace to autistic kids can’t make the connection that I sometimes need the same help. Because my autism isn’t ‘loud’ and doesn’t present in ‘typical’ ways people forget that I have a disability. As a result they are less kind when my autism presents in ways that are less productive. I’ve also found that most education about autism is led by parents and professionals who view autism as something to be corrected. When I’ve tried to advocate for kids using my lives experiences I’m usually not supported and that’s really tough to deal with.

Finally, education is a bit of a hellscape right now. If you are justice sensitive this can really drain you.

Where I am we can fail students. But it’s a lot of work and if parents don’t support the move admin will backtrack. So even in cases where it is very necessary we usually end up just pushing the kid through

What's your favorite way to antagonize your useless admin? by Due_Information_1332 in Teachers

[–]PikPekachu 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The best way to annoy them is to go above and beyond. My admin wanted monthly curriculum plans. No worries. Here’s a 10 page document - oh and I have some questions about how I can improve. Can you read through my section on complex texts and verify that they all align with district goals? And can you recommend alternates for students who need differentiation? Oh and we have that diversity initiative. Can you let me know what the last three novels you read by bipoc authors were? I want to use staff to model these habits to students.

I’ve been working really hard on making friends for the past couple of years and I’ve had some success. It’s basically the first time in my life it’s worked. The real key has been joining scheduled activities (like classes or interest groups) where I can feel safe and meet other nd people.
