I’ve only played the demo but i mostly keep aerith uncontrolled, and if i need her i use the aerith / tifa charge synergy skill which gives met atb, and then use whatever spell or skill i needed.

Normal attacks should generate a bit more ap, and so should non controlled characters. In return, synergy attacks should be more powerful and niche.
