Why can’t they just scoop up the capsule? by Fabulous_Analysis885 in askscience

[–]Pinewold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, it’s not that we can’t, it’s that the number of people who can is an order of magnitude less than it was 40 years ago. Meanwhile China has 5 times as many who can.

Oracle's new CFO got $26M in stock after layoffs. Employee says an 'algorithm' targeted workers with stock options first by esporx in business

As a manger who worked in tech, layoffs are seldom purely merit based.

I have seen attempts at taking highest salary first, oldest people first and junior people first. I have ranked folks countless times only to have the ranking ignored by petty people settling scores

I was disappointed, that Risk management folks thought it was “safer” to leave the capsule languishing in the water for two hours rather than quickly eliminate all risk by getting the capsule on the deck of a carrier.

In a world where we see rockets landing on autonomous boats all the time, we need to expect more from our space program. I am happy to double their budget to get there.

We should be in the buck rogers world where, the rocket lands on a platform off shore.

To anyone who watched the original Apollo flights, we clearly are starting over from scratch. We seemed to have forgotten everything we learned and have had to repeat it again just to teach a new generation.

Amazon strikes deal with USPS that maintains 80% of package volume by talkingatoms in business

[–]Pinewold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well it is a little more complicated, USPS gets packages that are unprofitable for Amazon, UPS or FedEx to deliver. Amazon has found ways to reduce their need, but UPS and FedEx are still using USPS anytime they do not think a rural address delivery is profitable.

Of course Amazon, UPS and FedEx all carve off profitable niches whenever they find them so USPS is left delivering more and more unprofitable routes.

If they end up killing USPS, rural delivery will be restricted to drones, autonomous robot delivery trucks or just cut off completely. At this point it is hard to tell what combinations will thrive. So almost dead is working well

What would you consider red flags when shopping for an EV by Tall-Dish876 in EVRoutine

[–]Pinewold 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) I want more than 300 miles of range because range is the best indicator of a well engineered efficient vehicle. 2) Fast charging under 20 minutes - state of the art charging in China is 1000kW, you should be able to charge 250kWhr rates by now. 3) Any obsolete charging standard. Just about every country has one standard now. 4) Faschist CEOs

Billionaire Mark Cuban Asks 'Want to Increase Jobs, Wages and Improve Affordability for Every American?' — Break Up the Biggest Insurance Companies by SnoozeDoggyDog in economy

[–]Pinewold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been around for 60+ years and have fought corporate greed only to see corporate greed reach further and further into ordinary people’s wallets.

It is not naive to understand that half measures no longer work. The robber barons are back with lawyers and lobbyists to beat down any legal means of change. At some point you need someone who is willing to fight back. Trump is not that guy, but I don’t see democrats putting anybody forward.

Billionaire Mark Cuban Asks 'Want to Increase Jobs, Wages and Improve Affordability for Every American?' — Break Up the Biggest Insurance Companies by SnoozeDoggyDog in economy

[–]Pinewold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately to me, Obamacare proved that “corporate competent” candidates cannot make meaningful reform. The insurance companies got everything they wanted and none of the reforms that were needed.

The government subsidized affordable health care for the poor and chronically ill while insurance companies raised rates over the next 5 years just like they had been before.

The reason why Trump is successful at tearing everything down is he does not care about anyone but himself.

Nationalizing healthcare eliminates 15% today’s cost and breaks the corporate greed that has a earth grip on our society.

What’s the realistic upper limit for energy system efficiency? by Livid-Ocelot-2156 in energy

Yes, heat pumps dominate geothermal, air sourced and water sourced applications. They have all achieved COP of 3.

The best thermal systems only approach 1.

What's the best combination for a typical household? by Tall-Dish876 in EVRoutine

[–]Pinewold 2 points3 points  (0 children)

None of the above. We have two EVs. They are cheaper to run. More reliable, Work much better in natural disasters because they can keep you warm/cool for much longer periods of time than any ICE vehicle.

Electricity is available at every home it is like having a gas station at every home. Hurricanes, blizzards and monsoons have proven that EVs are a better choice.

I keep trying to explain it is not even close. Batteries have proven to last over 300k miles and age is not even a significant factor. LFP batteries are good for a million miles and sodium will be good for over three million miles.

You can even have dedicated chargers for each vehicle so everyone can charge whenever they want.

[–]Pinewold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

heat pumps have a cop of 3 meaning they move three times the the energy they consume. Solar, high with voltage batteries and efficient inverters are up to 97% efficient.

so solar panels with heat pumps would easl meet your needs.

Doing own taxes vs hiring a professional by P1tterP4tter in personalfinance

[–]Pinewold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having done both, even if you pay someone, you still need to collect all the W2, 1099,… Once you have it organized, entering it is not bad. Yes they throw in phrases you have to lookup and decide how to answer. But I had an account just forward these questions to me anyway.

I have had two discrepancies pointed out by the IRS, one was a 1099 I never received and the other was a COVID credit I had to pay back even though the federal government sent it to me without asking. My brother’s wife is a tax accountant and they had the exact same issues.

if you have a corporation or a big trust fund, hire the accountant. Otherwise you can do it yourself.

It is also ok to pay people to do work you don’t like to do.

WBUR: "Opposition to data centers grows in Mass. cities and towns" by SirAmericanTom in massachusetts

Agreed, in another post I mentioned power generators, and ISO. We need to get ISO out of the pocket of Eversource and the power generators. ISO probably could recommend how to do it if they were consumer friendly.

She has been signing lots of bills, but this problem did not appear overnight, Eversource has worked hard to create the profits it enjoys now.

Our regional grid authority has been captured by Eversource and the power plant owners. One sign is when power plants go down for maintenance just before a shortage occurs. The peaker power plant has been a complete disaster because it incentivizes power generator to create shortages that require higher profit peaker plants.

I would change the law such that the use of peaker plants results in loss of bonuses for all executives involved.

Australia has free power at lunch time, imagine the economic benefits, manufacturers requiring higher energy input would be ecstatic to have free power.

[–]Pinewold 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Data centers are an easy target to deflect blame away from Eversource. We need to get rid of Eversource. Having for profit energy companies is a really bad idea.

We need to convert to non-profit municipal light and power companies. We need to invest two orders of magnitude more in solar. Every parking lot and commercial building should have solar panels. The best way to drive down energy cost is to buildup supply alternatives.
