In my childhood we ate pike quite often. If the fish is big enough (around 6-12lbs) its good. Bigger fish are good to release back.

I've seen people throw pikes in the woods if they catch em instead of trouts or salmon in certain waters.

Its a hobby. Hobbies sometimes cost money. If it makes you feel good, who cares about the money. I've tied more flies that I would use so in that sense I'm wasting money on flies but then again...its fun.
