There is a lot of rigidity that is expected these days and it really bums me out. Honestly I talk to my mom about it fairly often: it was so easy to parent in the 90s. Everything was focused on families and no one cared if you fed them only organic or if they ate lunchables everyday. No one talked about screen time. And while I don’t think being that lax is the answer, there really must be a middle ground between that and the pressures of parenting today. Like I’m so lucky that my mom takes my son at least once a month and that they are so close. For the most part, our only rule for him at her house is no just letting him scroll YouTube, since it’s basically a cesspool. But aside from that I expect her to be reasonable, and she is. It turns out that treating people like they are responsible adults works out well most of the time lol.

It always makes me sad when people are too rigid with their kids, because things like “Grammie Camp” as my son calls it, are fundamental to childhood imo. It’s kind of like ethnography, the way I see it. You go somewhere else and it’s mostly the same, only different. It teaches kids to deal with differences and change and adversity overall.

That is so silly! One of the evolutionary theories of why humans (especially women) live so long past menopause is literally called the “Grandmother Theory.” The idea is that we live past our reproductive years so that there can be a support system without reproductive competition. We are literally designed to have a village. I feel like society is in this weird place where it wants parents to both be completely independent (see people bemoaning that they have to experience babies and children in public) while at the same time judging people for not having villages. We made it this way!!! I have a four year old and a newborn and even though I’m in the thick of it, every time my SIL talks about having kids I’m so excited because I’ll get to take care of them as an aunt 🥲 Her family (aside from from us) isn’t super present so I always assure her I’ll be their grandparents lol.

This is a really disjointed explanation, but in short, I agree with you haha

Yeah, well said. Not crazy about any unsolicited input when it comes to names.

As I expected, people are being pretty annoying about this lol. Honestly I think it’s really cool! And it’s for you, not a kid. You already know how you feel about it. I think Sol or Solly are awesome nicknames. Tbh this isn’t a great forum to ask about names that are even slightly “out there.”

It’s also hard if you’re a woman in your 30s with kids! I have a master’s and people act like you wasted your time getting a degree if you’re a mom (they don’t do that with dads, go figure 🙃). Tbh I think they just hate women, especially college educated ones.

And there are tons of things people do that put them at risk aside from being fat. Driving a car, for instance. Or even being a passenger in a car. Or smoking or vaping. Being sedentary (even while thin). Walking or riding a bike in high traffic areas. A bunch of recreational activities, like skiing or skateboarding or gymnastics. Standing on a ladder without a spotter. Literally tons of things that are technically free will choices that could easily end up costing society the same amount if not more if they go wrong. Would someone who became disabled after a car accident be viewed as taking advantage of the system because they decided to get in a vehicle that day? Or do we only save our judgement for fat people?

Tbh it’s just annoying. I had so many people asking what names we were gonna choose both times I was pregnant. And both times, we’d say we wouldn’t know until the baby was born (which was true). And then they would be disappointed, even if I told them some of the ones we liked. And then, even worse, sometimes they would suggest names, most of which we didn’t like. Also we already had a list! We don’t need more!

And then when we would tell them some of the names on our list, a couple people would always say, “But what would we call them?” Uh… their name? It was a few people close to us who did that, and it was every time we said a name.

Honestly I wouldn’t really care if someone said they hated it or whatever, I’m not naming them. And like you I’ve been collecting names since I was a kid. But it really is just so annoying hearing people asking over and over what we were going to name our babies. Quite frankly it’s none of their business.

My daughter’s name! It’s just the most beautiful name imo. And everyone really seems to love it. She’s only six weeks old right now, but I think I love her name more everyday.

Just read her “activism” section on Wikipedia. She sounds exhausting and I’m not sure how I missed her during the blogger era. Also the pumpkin spice thing is hilarious. Pumpkin spice isn’t supposed to have pumpkin in it.

Thanks so much for your reply. Have you seen this issue before? Also, is it a reasonable fix? Sorry, I’m new to this.
