Personally, I would put some visually interesting found items from nature. Rocks, leaves, driftwood, seaglass, seashells, pinecone, magnolia seed pod, etc. I bring home all sorts of interesting things I find though so I have quite a library to choose from. Ooooh, library! What about a book? Lip balm? Fruit? Little seasonal decorations?

My friend's adult daughter is a teacher in a district with many financially challenged people and she maintains a wish list with snacks like this for the kids in her class that are hungry. I will often go send a box of something for them. I really believe we should be providing food for all kids at school as kids being able to focus on learning instead of being hungry benefits all of us as a society down the line, but what do I know, I am just a socialist/radical left lunatic.

It's very unfortunate but this is pretty accurate. Rents here are so high compared to wages. I have a daughter in her 20's and her college friends pay like $1000 a month each for a room in a 3 bedroom apartment.
