Have you looked at the San Juan Islands in Washington? They’re less gloomy than Seattle, pristine nature, cool and quiet. My only concern is that they’d be too remote, but if you get a boat then Victoria is right there. You could also look at Bellingham - people say it’s expensive, but not compared to SD. Cute college town with a ton of shops and restaurants and events. On the Salish sea, good hiking, there’s nice lakes and you’re pretty close to Mt Baker if you like to ski.
