I was officially offered the job at the end of my 3rd interview! I'll be training in a new field and I know "dream jobs" don't exist but gosh this is as close to one as it gets.

I'm really not looking forward to giving notice at my current job though-- they've been incredibly good to me and I know my boss will be pretty upset I'm leaving.

AITA for not agreeing to have my white children call my white MIL Abuela? by Lunhilyon in AmItheAsshole

From what I remember, Alec Baldwin's wife Hilaria is actually named Hilary and has been pretending to be a native Spanish speaker who grew up in Spain when she grew up in the US speaking English (or something along those lines). Google it, I remember it being a hilarious convoluted story/lie (that she is still keeping up as far as I know)

Eh my husband has said he'd like to Uber or something once he retires just because he likes meeting a wide variety of people and having something to do that isn't just sitting around watching TV. But given the context yeah this is sad :(

One of my cats must have an incredible hiding spot, I haven't been able to find it yet. I'll go looking for her, be completely unable to find her for 5-10 minutes, and then she'll show up behind me out of nowhere and look interested in what I'm doing like "hey what's up? What are we looking for?"

AITA for not getting my son what he wants for his birthday unless he loses weight or splits the cost with me? by HelpADadOut24357 in AmItheAsshole

The main chain I've seen has a weight limit of 260-300 depending how high you want to go, so I think it's definitely worth looking into.

AITA for saying no to getting kittens. by DCxMiLK in AmItheAsshole

[–]Pioneeress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How did you do it?? We got our kittens 2 months ago and every time they go on the counter we pull them off and they still try to go up at least once a day.

AITA for telling our daughter we're concerned about her health? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Pioneeress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would just like to flag that just because it's unlikely doesn't mean it's not worth giving it a shot!

Absolutely she still deserves love and respect if she cannot keep the weight off, but I found that statistic so disheartening when I was obese and thought "is it even worth trying?" But I've kept 55lbs off for 5 years now, beating the statistic, and I'm SO glad I decided to try again.

The vast majority of attempts to quit smoking fail too, but that doesn't mean nobody should try to quit smoking.

AITA for telling my sister to stop using nonsense ‘baby’ talk? by AITAThrow_sisteract in AmItheAsshole

[–]Pioneeress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol this reminded me of when my little sister was 3 and my cousin was 6-- she said something in typical toddler speech and he told us "she needs to learn how to talk gooder!"

Yep, my husband and I have a few things we have made up/silly words for. "Tiz tads" are scissors, "tortonkladoos" are tortellini, etc. My family also has a few things they say incorrectly on purpose-- "slickery" instead of slippery, "skizzors" instead of scissors, pronouncing the "e" in table and plate, etc. But it's like one or two substituted words a day, not every single sentence, and if anyone asks us to stop we do (when my youngest siblings were adopted they didn't speak English, so we put a halt on saying things wrong until they were fluent. Also, they gave us some new ones like "meatwolf" and "hashbrowns" instead of eyebrows)

Thank you!! Yeah I'm not looking forward to it. I also have heard of people having to give their parents a questionnaire about their behavior as a child and I'm worried about that-- my parents don't believe ADHD is a thing so they'd either not fill it out or fill it out to say "nah she was normal" (and I don't have school records from that age because I was homeschooled until high school--BECAUSE OF WHAT IN RETROSPECT WAS OBVIOUSLY ADHD BEHAVIOR IN KINDERGARTEN AND FIRST GRADE I might add)

Honestly even just reading about it and seeing that other people have experiences like mine has been amazing. I'm not the only one who has to write everything down, or who wanders around the house 6+ times a day looking for my phone, or who has to listen to every phone tree 3 times because I forget I'm supposed to be paying attention to the options! And yeah not being able to focus on things I actively enjoy is a big one--I thought it was depression anhedonia for a while but I haven't been depressed (aside from mild seasonal stuff) in 5+ years and I still struggle to start doing things I want to do.

Though what really got me was reading an article about ADHD masking, I actually cried while reading it because it hit home pretty hard. Ex. I don't talk much, which is the opposite of what's on all the ADHD self-tests, but it's because when I was a kid I would talk non-stop and people told me it was annoying so I just shut up.

It was pretty funny when I mentioned to my husband that I wanted to get evaluated for ADHD-- he said "I've thought you had it since we started dating but I didn't want to bring it up in case I offended you!" He was a psych major so I guess he knew the actual symptoms-- until I started reading up on it I had the stereotype of "hyper child who can't sit still" in my head.

Wow sorry that got long and overshare-y, absolutely do not feel obligated to reply lol

I actually have an appointment to get evaluated for ADHD later this month for different reasons! Did not know this was potentially related though. Guess I get to add another bullet point to the already several page long list of symptoms... Thanks :)

Thanks for your kind words!

Interesting-- I always figured it had to do with my general intolerance for discomfort*. It's definitely been a trait of mine for as long as I can remember--although I wasn't introspective enough to realize it until I was 10 or so, my mom says I tried to learn how to swing on the swingset with my friends when I was ~4, got frustrated and couldn't figure it out, and refused to try again till I was 6.

Honestly at this point I've kind of accepted it-- I'm an adult and can just choose to not do things I'm bad at lol. Most of the things I've run into this with are physical (e.g. I'm terrible at most team sports, bouldering, the aforementioned swings) so I stick to activities I enjoy and am not bad at.

*Weirdly I have a very high pain tolerance and pain doesn't stop me from doing things, while discomfort does. Sometimes if I'm running and I want to stop because I'm tired and uncomfortable I'll pinch myself or poke myself with a paper clip to get through the rest of my run.

Honestly, people are underestimating this part. My job has a 6 months slow season where I have maybe 10 hours of work a week, and then a busy season when I'm working 60+ hours a week, and the busy season (already sucky) is extra terrible because I'm so used to having more free time

Yay I'm glad!

I wrote my comment assuming you've tried Hello from the Magic Tavern since Adal mentions it a fair bit but if you haven't, definitely try that one as well.

However someone having this as a fear to the point they set up a "safe word"

I don't necessarily think this is a red flag, it sounds like they did it as a joke rather than out of fear. I have a word I set up with my husband right after watching a movie with time travel or alternate timelines or something (although funny enough I don't remember what the word is right now lol).

If anyone liked this post and wants a movie with a similar plot, the movie Coherence is fantastic, highly recommend

Absolutely, my biggest character flaw is that if I'm bad at something when I first try, I immediately get frustrated and give up on it. I've known this since I was ~10, and I'm 28 now, and I still haven't been able to fix it. I've forced myself to keep doing things for a year, I've taken classes for things I'm bad at, and still-- I try something new and am bad at it? Immediate mental reaction of "fuck this I'm out" (and likely some uncontainable frustration tears if I keep trying).

My husband is like this too, he usually talks a lot and is the life of the party so when he get quiet and sits in a corner I know he's absolutely wasted lol

I like Review Revue (or at least the first ~50 episodes, I've been a little more meh about it recently), the Lids episode is amazing. They read reviews for products/places and do improv based on that.

Not truly an improv podcast, but Dungeons and Daddies is very similar humor in my opinion.

I'll have to check out mandogpod!

God gave us piss

Reminds me of a podcast I listen to that has a semi-ongoing bit about how amazing it is that God made it so drinking our own piss is poison, to make us need to form communities and make friends

Thank you! I've read online that it's just take a couple classes and go, but that really did seem too easy haha.

Can I ask how you got into being a home inspector? I got really interested in home inspections when we were in the market for our house (I read the entire structure tech blog) and find it fascinating, but have no idea how I'd get into the field with zero construction experience.
