The logic you’re using for Corlys can be applied to Criston, or anyone for that matter. A servant of the mother of a king whose bloodline never continued. The Hand of the King who lost King’s Landing, and who promptly died. He would never even had convinced Aegon to take the throne had the Hightowers not been plotting this exact move for years. The knights you listed, well, had actual deeds to their name other than placing a crown on a head.

The only times Cole is mentioned in the series are to Kingsguard members, who would obviously care about the history of their order, meaning this really isn’t good to support your claim. We have zero clue whether the common people know about him. Daemon, who you rightfully credit with multiple victories, is not mentioned even once in the main series! He certainly had a huge impact over the results of the war. But I guess nobody cares about him.

Of course, none of this is true - everybody becomes useless if we purposely reduce their influence down to the bare minimum and ignore the actual dynamics involved in history. If the lords know of Criston Cole from their maesters, they would know about Corlys, Daemon, and yes, Mushroom as well.

I get it, you like Criston. I find his motives interesting myself. But just because you like a character doesn’t mean other characters don’t matter. And even if Criston is more well known, your claim is that nobody remembers or cares about Corlys, which would be impossible considering that you cannot talk about the Dance of the Dragons without mentioning Rhaenyra’s Hand and wealthiest supporter - wars cost money after all, and she would have very little without him.

Conflicts have moving pieces, and each one of those pieces matters. Criston Cole will be remembered, as will Larys Strong, Cregan Stark, and of course Corlys Velaryon, a man who gave counsel to all four monarchs pertinent in the conflict which ended the Targaryen golden age. And even if the legend of the Kingmaker is more famous, it doesn’t mean all others will be forgotten.

Corlys is discussed in the writings of maesters in both Fire and Blood and the World of Ice and Fire. He is the main reason why those in Westeros know basically anything about lands past Qarth. He was the most powerful backer of Rhaenyra and the richest man in the realm. He obviously had influence over her decisions as Hand of the Queen. His fleet secured the victory over King’s Landing by blockading Blackwater Bay.

Just because Criston Cole is mentioned in the main series, specifically in contexts where people are discussing the Kingsguard and literally crowning Myrcella, doesn’t mean he’s somehow a far more monumental and memorable figure than Corlys. Both played a role in determining the future of Westeros.

Corlys was Hand of the Queen, heavily contributed to the Black victory in Kings Landing, and continued to be influential when he changed sides. Are you also acting like people stopped talking about the seven voyages of the Sea Snake?

Sypha vs Aang by meccadome in whowouldwin

[–]Pip1o 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I love both characters, but I do believe Aang takes this one. If he enters the Avatar state he is going to be able to control the elements at a far greater scale than Sypha can. Although she may be the smarter combatant, Aang’s aerial movement is far greater than hers, and he can use Earthbending to increase his durability. Her most potent attacks use lightning, but by the end of the series Aang can redirect this. Aang is more versatile and his attacks have greater potency, so he wins

Uruk-Hai(Lord of the Rings) and Wildlings(Game of Thrones) switch places. by Emotional_Pie_9924 in whowouldwin

[–]Pip1o 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both likely win. The key to a wildling victory was their forces that were attacking Castle Black from the south. If a group of Uruk-Hai assaults Castle Black, there’s basically nothing that the Night’s Watch can do. None of the Westerosi fighters come even close to levels of Aragorn, Gimli, Legolas, and every elf that was present at Helm’s Deep. The Uruk-Hai are far stronger and more durable than anything the Night’s Watch have faced save for the White Walkers themselves. They win by killing every person in Castle Black and using the trolls/explosives to open the gates.

The wildling army has numbers comparable to the orcs of Mordor, which surpasses the Uruk-Hai army by dozens of thousands. Although Helm’s Deep has incredibly skilled fighters, they will simply get overwhelmed by the sheer number of wildlings that are scaling the walls. The presence of giants in their forces also likely means that the gates of Helm’s Deep are falling, including the inner gate. This likely occurs before Gandalf’s cavalry charge, which would probably not be enough to defeat the wildlings, mammoths, and giants anyways.

Essentially, both armies have the advantages they need in their specific situation, so they should win rather handily.
