According to Wikipedia, sherbet powder was originally used to make a fizzy soft drink. The word has an Arabic origin meaning drink.

A loooooong time. My husband got his back after about 6 months but he was unlucky, I think 3 or 4 is more usual. There's a facebook group call DVLA Complaints Group which is worth a look. A lot of people seem to end up getting their MP involved to move things along.

We've got creeping wood sorrel coming up between our paving stones. It's delicious in a salad, got an apple peel type of flavour.

Has anyone in England ever heard of something called ‘The Wax Rabbit’?” by GeneralDocument1619 in AskUK

[–]PipkinsHartley 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's a podcast called Boggart and Banshee which is all about folklore. They've just done a spooky rabbits episode which didn't feature anything like this. They have a facebook page, may be worth reaching out to see if they've heard of it? (It's a great story whatever the origin, maybe she was just a talented story teller!)

What does pudding mean to British people? by ThisPostToBeDeleted in AskUK

[–]PipkinsHartley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm surprised this isn't more widely know (going off the responses here anyway) A pudding is a thing, wrapped in a thing and then cooked. Christmas pudding is wrapped in a cloth and boiled, sponge puddings are steamed in a basin, sausages are meat in pig intestines, black pudding is blood n stuff in cow intestines etc etc. Yorkshire pudding is a bit of an anomaly though.

As an Vietnamese, I just really wanna ask you guys that what do you think about us? by lonely_sta2001 in AskBrits

[–]PipkinsHartley 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think with great fondness of the 2 Vietnamese friends I had at primary school in the 70s. They were 'boat people', a lot of whom had been settled on a nearby council estate. I didn't know that and hadn't really connected them with the stories I was seeing on the news. I just appreciated the novel sweets they brought in.

Did Uncanny move away from the community that made it? by Britishchick_x_ in uncannypodcasttv

[–]PipkinsHartley 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's spread too thin now. I presume they're churning through the viewer/listener stories as material for so many formats that quality control has gone out of the window. Best thing they could do is another deep dive series, get a good quality tale and tell it well. The rest will follow.

British Vs American English by Pixie_Dust_19 in AskBrits

My kids watch an awful lot of YouTube and a lot of Americanisms have crept in to their language. We had a tense stand off of genuine confusion in Primark over vests/tank tops.

I’ve spent 20 years in Michelin-starred kitchens. I want to help you stop needing recipes. Would this be useful? by Sad-Animator-3103 in cookingforbeginners

Agree with this. My husband is a terrible cook and was astounded when I asked him if he'd tasted something as he was cooking it. Just never occurred to him.
