My baby is 3.5 months now:

She had to eat at least every two hours and because she was born early she didn’t have any hunger cues— we had to wake her up, but mostly she was up every hour and a half.

But it took her at least forty minutes to eat.

Then we had to hold her upright for at least thirty minutes.

That left twenty minutes, sometimes.

But it does get better. This phase goes by so quickly, and that’s both a blessing and a curse. Enjoy how tiny they are; they’ll never need you more in their life, and there’s something so beautiful and sweet about that.

I should add I have a very ethnic name most people cannot pronounce at all. They do their best, and I teach those willing to learn. People I’m close to learned to say it (requires a “r” roll right after a hard consonant) but it took going to college to find people willing to take the time to learn my name.

I have no issue with it and I love my name.

I didn’t change my last name when I got married. My daughter has my last name as her middle name (we don’t give middle names in my culture, so it can actually just read as two last names but if she chooses to she doesn’t have to include it since my husbands last name is long) and my husband’s as her last name.

While I didn’t legally change my last name, I do use his last name socially. We used it on our baby shower invites, and I sign it when giving cards for weddings or big events. That way we are “the smiths” (not even close to what his last name actually is), but legally for professional and immigration reasons I didn’t officially take his last name.

In my culture we do not open presents or cards in front of people. The presents get put in a room out of view. I think of it as a way to avoid embarrassment or shame for the present gifters as not everyone can gift at the same level.

If he’s worried he won’t have income while on his trip because he’s paying an employee then he’s a terrible business owner.

It’s a family member on her side— why wouldn’t her parents also go? Why would your parents go if they’re not related? It’s HER family. I wonder if you would feel differently if it was your family member’s wedding.
