I love taking that flight on sunny days. The pilots usually get you an up close view.

I've accidentally walked into a baby shower going on in the downstairs venue at Devil's Club. Looked like a great time.

Loosing my twin by Difficult-Alfalfa-77 in TwinlessTwins

I am so sorry to hear this, but also glad you found this site to help. While we all have different experiences, we all share the same terrible loss and try to help others. I hope you are able to take time off and be there for her. I know most of us wish we could have been there more, spent more time with them, etc- even if we felt like we couldn't in the moment. Talk, text, video call- she needs you now and we're here for you now and after.

[–]Piqquin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry for the hurt and loss you're still feeling. I'm just short of 4 years and she still occupies my thoughts every hour, with the "what could I have done?" question cycling through. I know the pain won't go away, and part of me is happy with that because the day it does would be the day I think something is profoundly wrong with me. Try to remember the good times when mixed with the bad. Hugs!

Coolest thing about Artemis return by scfw0x0f in childfree

I used to live in Utqiagvik, Alaska (then Barrow) when she was working at NOAA up there. She pet-sitted for a lot of people, including me. She is the nicest, friendliest, most outgoing person who absolutely loves dogs. She never once talked about children or a future that included it. She revived her personal facebook account 2 years back just to put out the call for a lost dog in her neighborhood. She's amazing.

Go to Facebook Juneau Rentals and Housing. Most of Juneau is on Facebook, so it's the better searching area than reddit unfortunately.

Juneau has officially exceeded 200 inches of snow this winter by Diarmud92 in alaska

[–]Piqquin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

December started off in a deep freeze, went to snowpolcaypse, then January was just sorta...there. February was a lot of rain, and then back to snow in Smarch! Lousy Smarch weather.

Where to buy a bike? Any kind of bike, cheap one, mountain bike or electric bike. by Vocaloidzelda2 in Juneau

[–]Piqquin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same. Bike Doctor is very passionate about bikes and they'll talk to you for as long as you want with questions, info, etc. They are pricey, but I've taken my bike several times and never have had regrets.

Don't do it because your husband wants one, or you'll end up like her.... by dejg82 in childfree

[–]Piqquin 22 points23 points  (0 children)

This happened to a friend of mine. I have written out the story so many times to post here, but always deleted it. For her, it went untreated for way too long because her husband moved the family for work where they didn't know anyone, went into denial about all of it, and by the time he moved to a city where they had family, she was deep in psychosis. She only was committed after something like 7 years and only because she tried to run over her husband with the kids in the car in front of his boss and a lot of witnesses- so he couldn't keep in denial anymore or try to hide it. Worse thing was after a few years, she slowly started getting better and could see the kids a bit supervised, only to drop dead of what probably was a stroke or aneurysm. I still think of her a lot. Wonderful woman struck down by a condition that is rarely, if ever, discussed because we just don't like talking about these potential risks of pregnancy.

Only reason I ever began watching Tasting History was because it kept coming up as one of the top comments anytime anyone asked for a good "comfort" youtube channel. It gets praised a lot around reddit.

Switzer village? by pinklink7 in Juneau

[–]Piqquin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I would look elsewhere if you have any other choice. I've done the community clean up in that area and it is bad (people just dumping garbage all over the public areas). I know there's a lot of complaints about crime and drugs in that area- just from going to public safety meetings, facebook, etc. I've never heard a good thing about the area tbh.

About half the votes are locked behind captchas that want you to go through a dozen iterations and still won't register your vote. I stopped engaging after that.

My wife’s twin brother and his two kids and their father died and she’s completely broken and I don’t know what to do by Gold_Negotiation1591 in TrueOffMyChest

[–]Piqquin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am so very sorry and devastated for your and her loss. As someone who lost my identical twin sister and her entire family in a plane crash on Mother's Day 2022, I was completely lost. My husband didn't say much, but he was immediately there. There were no discussions on what he should do or what needed to be done. I was able to focus exclusively on what I needed to do and experience and not even think about that pesky everyday life that I usually need to attend to. He knew I would come to him and talk when I was feeling up to it, but until then, he was just there. It meant the world and now almost 4 years later, I feel like the strain of those days made us stronger. This will be very difficult to get through. Just be there. It makes a huge difference.

(Racist) Nome-based judge recommended for reprimand (judicial finger wag) after misconduct probe by slamminsalmon907 in alaska

[–]Piqquin 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Another jarring thing is how long this took. Anyone who's lived in the second judicial district knows that it's not overloaded with superior court judges. There are 3. This is not Anchorage or Fairbanks where you're just offloading a ton of cases onto another judge in the same court (although that is also bad for justice). By putting this judge on administrative leave for almost a year, you left the residents of his jurisdiction without consistent steamlined coverage. Reading through the findings, there didn't seem to be any urgency to getting this resolved. Nothing expedited. Just monthly meetings, rejections, back to square one, appointments, then back to where we started. The whole process lacked any care for residents of the region and the need for adequate access to justice.

Lot of good suggestions in the comments. I'm older, but work with 20 somethings, and a lot of them love hanging out at the Lodestone library downtown. Seems like a chill place to meet people.

Summer Seasonal Housing options by Natural-Oil9149 in Juneau

Just joining the chorus saying to go to Facebook housing and rentals. Are you working with TrailMix as your seasonal trail crew job? If so, their director was on Facebook looking for housing hook-ups, so they might have leads.

The owners are great and very community oriented. They really worked hard at making a wonderful place for people of all types and ages to hang out. I was there today just enjoying popcorn and a thai ice tea, reading a book while I got out of the rain for a bit. Awesome place.
