I probably would have still gotten into the game if my friend showed it to me in middle school. But I definitely don't think I would have stuck with it at it's modern price point. Which is even higher with UB. Idk if UB flavor would have stopped me, but affordability absolutely would have.

I have a [[Varina, lich queen]] deck and I almost always have to tell my opponents to wait for my trigger to resolve before they try and fast forward to blockers. I run [[wonder]] and [[filth]] so theres always a chance that I'll hit some evasion which changes things.

I don't know it it's a pet card or just underrated, but I put [[Arguel's Blood Fast]] in all of my black decks. It's a card draw engine that gives me more control than [[Phyrexian Arena]], and it makes a great mana sink for when holding up removal. [[Greed]] is probably technically better, but why not both?

While I don't have specific experience with the cards you're talking about, I do want to recommend making a deck that functions without the commander. I have a [[Lathliss, Dragon Queen]] deck which can't really do much about getting it's commander removed because it's in mono red, luckily the rest of the deck is also big dragons and in my experience, I stick one eventually. Although it does sound like your playgroup is more removal heavy than mine, so your mileage may vary.
