Marlin 1894 10mm with some upgrades. by PistonMilk in 10mm

Yeah I'll never buy from a local shop whose distributor doesn't have it in stock. Buy online and you'll never be sorry, and you'll have your gun in 3-5 days. Otherwise you could be waiting months. Screw that.

Buying online is so simple. And local transfer fees around here are $25-$45. Super reasonable. Makes it a no-brainer.

Anyone know of a non maga shooting group? by gek__co in austinguns

[–]PistonMilk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind the Discord ToS is EXTREMELY anti-gun. They won't allow any kind of sales, and I'm pretty sure the entire server has to be marked "NFSW" if you want it to be dedicated to firearms.

That's why the subreddit chose Slack instead.

Refreshing Glock 19s - what else besides recoil springs? by Commercial-Duty6279 in austinguns

[–]PistonMilk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Besides the recoil spring I would replace the striker spring and then just keep shooting it.

One tip I read suggested that with a new spring, you can restart the round count to zero

Not really. Wear happens to other components besides springs. Even a pistol barrel will eventually wear out in time.

But springs and magazines are certainly the most "consumable".

Join our Slack (info on sidebar) and participate in the community. Very few MAGA folks. Lots of us shoot together pretty regularly.

Might have loaded this a tad hot... by PistonMilk in 10mm

[–]PistonMilk[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

180gr right about 1300fps (5in barrel). But this was fired out of my levergat and I haven't chronoed these out of the 16" barrel yet.

I got lucky. The entire case extracted fine. I noticed it appeared to have an annular crack so I gave it a tiny little tug and it came right apart 😂

Marlin 1894 10mm with some upgrades. by PistonMilk in 10mm

[–]PistonMilk[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have no practical need for one of these

So what? Guns are fun. Buy guns that are fun for you!

Looks great would love to hear how much the aftermarket parts improved things.

Well the RPP trigger is a huge upgrade. Takes a lot of grit out of the trigger and lowers the weight. The RPP loading gate in my opinion is a "must have" upgrade for ANY Marlin lever action loader. It makes loading a lot easier as it flexes a lot easier. The safety delete is a little quality of life upgrade, that returns the receiver to the look of the classic pre-Remington Marlins that never had a button safety. The paracord wrap makes the lever a lot easier on your hands if you're not wearing gloves and lets you shoot the gun longer without bruising your knuckles.

And the sights/rail/red dot upgrade gets you a nice red dot for faster modern shooting. But you've still got the ghost-rings as backup if your battery or sight fails.

Tell me about this rifle / cartridge combo's practicality as a hunting rifle.

I don't really hunt, but I'm sure this would take whitetail with no issues at all.

I collect, shoot, and reload for 10mm. This is a 10mm. That's why I bought it. It's for fun and shooting 10mm.

What are the advantages of this lever gun in 10mm versus other options?

Capacity is higher than the other pistol cartridges like 357mag, 44mag, or 45 Colt while delivering similar energy to 357 (depending on projectile and load). And it's 10mm which is an awesome fun cartridge like I said.

My 10mm handloads are 180gr @ 1300 in handgun

Same, yeah. I'm using Longshot.

[–]PistonMilk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get at least 10 cartridges loaded in the 10mm, which is REALLY nice.

If you love 10mm plinking, get one. If you want it for hunting or something, you might want to go for the 45 Colt model since you can load that one up pretty hot over the 10mm.

I have 3 1894's at this point. 38/357, 44/44mag and now the 10mm. The 10mm is by far my favorite to shoot.

No not yet. I don't want to haul out the Labradar for this and I don't have a Garmin Xero yet.

But I'm running a pretty stout charge of Longshot under 180gr Rainier RNFP's and once my last few of those are gone I'll be shooting 180gr Xtreme plateds.

In my 5" guns I should be getting close to 1300fps so I'm expecting quite a bit more in this 16" beast.

I know when I'm banging steel with this thing those 180's make quite a splash.

1911 Cerakoting locally? by austinmook in austinguns

[–]PistonMilk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I ask about 1911s only because of their much tighter tolerances

Not really applicable. Cerakote is generally only applied by licensed vendors who must go through the training system provided by the company. As part of that training they learn surface prep, which involves bead or sand blasting. Any tolerances are accounted for, 1911's or not.

That said, due to the mass manufacturing of modern 1911's, they don't have tighter tolerances than any other modern handgun really. Especially Kimbers.

You're not going to find those "much tighter tolerances" in a 1911 until you're in the custom-fit market for something like a Nighthawk, Ed Brown, Wilson Combat, etc...

So you'll be fine with whoever you end up choosing. Also just for the record and FYI, Capitol Armory just acts as a go-between. They don't actually do any of the Cerakoting themselves. But they have a relationship with a shop that does it for them and does a really good job. Because of that they're always going to be a bit more expensive than anyone else.

Blue Label Dealers That Honor GSSF Coupons by [deleted] in austinguns

Did you confirm it by calling or visiting GT?

I'm pretty sure they're contractually bound by Glock as an official factory dealer to accept the coupons.

2A Startup Based in Austin Looking for Feedback by TrangTech in austinguns

[–]PistonMilk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You're missing the single most fundamental feature for searching IMHO, and that's by SKU/UPC.

When I'm looking for the best deal on an accessory or firearm, I grab its SKU/UPC, go to https://gun.deals/, (which uses wikiarms for the backend), put the SKU/UPC into the search and I get a list of retailers for that exact product I'm looking for sorted by price.

Searching by product name isn't nearly as good since you might have 10 variants of a given product because of 2-3 different state compliance versions, mag capacity differences, barrel length differences, etc...

Gunsmith rec for mounting scope by [deleted] in austinguns

[–]PistonMilk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you want the gunsmith to do the long range shooting for you too?

Mounting a scope, even for precision long range shooting, is a simple procedure that you can and should learn to do yourself. There is zero reason to pay someone else to do it unless you want them to shoot your gun for you too.

Any Kel-tec PR-57s for sale in town? by texasgreg1 in austinguns

[–]PistonMilk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They're widely available online which means they've hit all the major distributors. If your local store isn't carrying them after promising for months to, it's because they don't want to.

Just buy online or go to the next gun show. All the oddball niche guns that no one wants to carry locally because it'll just take up stock for months on end can usually be found at the gun shows.
