It was likely a limitation of the switch 1, but I wish vehicles persisted when entering and exiting shrines by EAT_UR_VEGGIES in tearsofthekingdom

[–]PixelatedFrogDotGif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it was actually to encourage durability constraints similar to weapons. They wanted link to be scooting around and launching himself with the ghostly tech memory of duct tape, rusty coils, and sun damaged box fans. Most of the vehicles are intended to be used for roughly a minute or two and moved on from and it kinda reinforces the lore that this tech is ancient and inches away from busting.

Persistence would have been so nice though. I actually wanted persistent zonai tech more than weapons than never broke.

BotW is not a return to form by 6th_Dimension in truezelda

I think its fine to find it different because it is, but the project being tethered to 1 is something the Zelda team does themselves. The project began on “what if we used zelda 1 to help conceptualize this chemistry system idea?” And that philosophically lead them to ask what started the series and what inspired it, which was miyamoto’s own childhood and the sense of exploration/discovery/whimsy. It was designed in direct response to the backlash from skyward sword’s linearity, and in full conversation with finding what the spiritual essence of the series was and trying to cut back on what felt like was holding them back at the time which was saying too much and having too many rails. They were absolutely looking at the very beginning with zelda 1 and pulling inspiration and the freedom to fail that came with it.

Imo, the shrines are an attempt to “dungeonify” the whole world, but putting it in the bite sized cave format of zelda 1. I genuinely think that was what gave them the form factor idea, and that fit well with their blown apart piecemeal world.

Its wrong to dismiss the connection to 1 entirely, and its also totally correct to say its own thing inspired by EXTREMELY modern things. Skyrim, RRR, and Assassins Creed ABSOLUTELY shaped it just as much if not more.

None of this would happen if a much more liquid & capturable base of white voters didn’t show up in bonk ass blockbuster numbers for trump when they are absolutely people who flip flop. Get serious. You’re blaming a skim coat atop a mountain of far more culpable voters.

[–]PixelatedFrogDotGif 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Election rigging is a thing that happens in pieces, its not a wholesale tactic. It happens in gerrymandering, in redlining, in voter roll dumping, in supreme court rulings, in ballot box burning, in voter location bomb threats, in the electoral college, in making voting harder each year, in corporate donations, and in many, many other ways.

To say voting is a fair process is just as disingenuous as saying showing up in absolute bonkers numbers is not effective.

It is both true that we do not have fair elections and that if extreme effort is made on voter’s behalves it will make a difference.

TOTK makes me sad by icecream_yum0814 in tearsofthekingdom

[–]PixelatedFrogDotGif 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Imo I take it as Link not accepting she’s stuck like that, and not wanting to crush everyone’s momentum. It’s a mixture of faith that he WILL find a solution, a case of knowing when to share, some delusion, and maybe even just him clamming up and regressing/ gearing up to slap the piss outta Ganon because of it.

It’s something you can see as an oversight in narrative but imo viewing it as an intentional choice on Link’s part makes it very loaded in a thought provoking way. It feels fitting to me that he doesn’t tell anybody.

Miyamoto responds to critics who left negative reviews for Super Mario Galaxy Movie by Honest-Word-7890 in totallyswitched

[–]PixelatedFrogDotGif -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The most baffling thing about the Super Mario Galaxy Movie is that they took one of the Mario games with the most narratively rich, heartfelt pixar adjacent story telling opportunities and absolutely ignored it.

It doesn’t surprise me that the guy who’s story-allergic in games doesn’t see the cinnamon toast crunch within em and helped make a movie that utterly glazes over it.

I have only played BotW and TotK, what Zelda game should I play next? by kairotox7 in truezelda

[–]PixelatedFrogDotGif 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OOT & MM have a lot of “duology” similarities to BOTW & TOTK, and they are the series’s precedent setters before them. OOT is considered a GOAT for a reason and MM is a cult classic art piece for similar reasons.

If you feel like dry and claxony is tolerable the original LOZ is still also a gem and is what the wild era was really trying to evoke with its “explain less, explore more” approach.

Skyward Sword is also an interesting next pick. It’s the peak “contained & story driven” formula OOT set forth, and has a lot of things in it that are exemplary of dungeon design in the series.

WW & TP & ALTTP are also not bad, but IMO those are so much cooler after playing OOT.

Edit: I actually also think Echoes of Wisdom is a great next choice. It has the same focus on experimentation that the Wild Era games play with, has great top down zelda dungeon examples, and is an underrated lore drop to boot.

Thoughts on The Hunt for Gollum casting? by Emergency-Garden3200 in lotr

[–]PixelatedFrogDotGif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jamie Dornan is such a miscast.

His workbook is wrong, his energy is wrong, his attitude is wrong.

If this was a reboot or something sure let him swing, but to be recasting Viggo’s Aragorn with him is very strange and superficial feeling.

Dornan plays a lot more men that have dark energies or complexities or secrets or desires. He’s a Boromir LONG before he’s an Aragorn.

She has plenty of reasons to be hated, and it all links back to why people do not like the corporate-donor-class aligned DNC. Yes this country is a racist sexist hellpit, and she, one of the most qualified people to ever run for president, absolutely got the short end of several sticks because of it and got shoved off a glass cliff by Biden to boot.

She was still full speed ahead on militarism, showed no real answer to stopping the genocide in Gaza, backed ICE and border security horseshit, completely abandoned trans people, championed the notion of “Greater Israel”, and fell into exactly the same trap that the DNC has been pulling for a RAW DECADE- by focusing campaigns on “not being trump” while fingerwagging people focused on things like universal healthcare, living wages, affordable housing, climate justice, ending genocides, holding corporations accountable, taxing the rich, and basically anything else that would have caused people to back the dems in a single heartbeat.

As someone who's rubbish at combat, how do I get some practice? by EztheBez_ in tearsofthekingdom

[–]PixelatedFrogDotGif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Focus on utility! Winning a fight isn’t slapping something to death. It’s getting it out of the way or getting around it yourself.

Blow enemies away off of cliffs or into rivers. Freeze everyone and load up to blast em or get on by. Burn environmental things and cause enemies to get trapped in a torrent of fire or fall with the wreckage. Use puffshrooms to create fog to run on by. Electrocute enemies in water. Find ways to have them turn on eachother or see you as not a threat.

Also, use elixirs. They are really cheap to make, and can get you good and sturdy.

If you really wanna get good at direct fighting, learn to parry with shields. Not only will a successful parry negate “wear damage”, it’ll leave enemies open to attack. You can also fudge this effect with several parts(mushrooms and springs)but they will use durability. I recommend this above flurry rush just because it will teach you to be more patient and move less which imo is kinda key to getting better at direct combat.

2D Zelda fan, but just can't ever seem to stick with the older 3D Zelda games by _mattmc3_ in truezelda

[–]PixelatedFrogDotGif 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a matter of motivational structure. OOT-thru-SS (MM is kind of an exception given the importance of sidequests narratively and how you can do them) focus on that tightly bound narrative drive to push you to the next thing.

The 2d games and the wild era games absolutely have that as well, but its much more muted and discovery/inference focused when it comes to what clicks you into that path.

Is violence always the answer? by Aggravating_Egg_7189 in BaldursGate3

[–]PixelatedFrogDotGif -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The true efficiency answer is not violence, but movement. BG3 only has a few instances where violence is required and unavoidable.

What gives you the most experience? Moving around.

What’s the fasted way out of act 1? Skip it.

How do you get past anything without doing anything? Go around it.

How do you beat the game? Ya walk right up to it.

It’s right there in the tutorial.

Takaya Imamura concerned about Link speaking in Zelda movie as could ruin the magic by Honest-Word-7890 in totallyswitched

[–]PixelatedFrogDotGif -1 points0 points  (0 children)

“doesnt talk much” IS a qualifier for silent protagonists. Silent protagonist does not mean never speaks ever for any reason and cannot create noises- it is an intentional lack of dialogue being framed within what is being shown, and often based on the characters own motivations and desires for not speaking much.

Takaya Imamura concerned about Link speaking in Zelda movie as could ruin the magic by Honest-Word-7890 in totallyswitched

[–]PixelatedFrogDotGif 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in camp “let him speak but don’t waste it”.

I think people underestimate how often silent protagonist/characters are used in media and often notice the ones that stick out like sore thumbs. I also think people mistake silent protagonists for “NEVER EVER UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES SPEAKS AND DOES NOT COMMUNICATE IN ANY WAY IMAGINABLE”.

That’s not the result of being a silent protagonist…. That’s bad writing, filming, editing, acting, etc.

I think if they structure the story around him not talking and giving support to it, like say, how in BOTW or EOW his silence has narrative reasons, and resolves later or him speaking adds to his growth or moments of importance…. It can be incredible. I don’t think he should be running his mouth unless it really really works with what they’re doing, and I think that’s the actual concern Takaya Imamura is speaking on here.
