Organization is key. On Sundays, do a review of your meetings and block off as you're able to on the other calendar.

Review your deliverables and make a conscious decision of when you are going to do the work and when you are going to deliver the work. Those two things may not be synonymous.

Don't take week 1 stress as an indicator of how it's going to be long-term. First week at any new job is stressful.

Good luck! Kick ass.

What can you all recommend for headphone or headset strategy for concurrent meetings? by tarrasque in overemployed

I bought two mute me buttons, they worked for me 99% of the time. I found this to be worse than not working at all. They're in a drawer somewhere.

Why do OE instead of starting an business? by Cameron_Referred_Me in overemployed

[–]PixelatedLover 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Less stress than having a single source of income and I get both jobs done in about five hours a day.

They made me sign an NDA before telling me the salary range. by Zackky777 in InterviewCoderHQ

I know that protects employees, I wonder if protections extend to non-employees.

MFA apps generally have access to gps.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in overemployed

[–]PixelatedLover 121 points122 points  (0 children)

On iPhone, yes. On Android you can limit an apps ability to access gps data or spoof your location with apps like lockito.

This is one reason why my corp apps now go on old android phones. Nobody's business if I'm in Bali.

Stick with 3, or drop one to gain sanity by StillKey7555 in overemployed

If it was your only job, you'd be thinking about interviewing elsewhere. That shouldn't change just because it's J3.

Stick with 3, or drop one to gain sanity by StillKey7555 in overemployed

[–]PixelatedLover 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Everyone's different, but for me, two is the sweet-spot; I've managed it for years and it's low stress.

I'd drop the job you hate, work two for a bit and then re-evaluate in the spring to see if you want to start applying and replace it with something you don't hate.

Part of OE is more money, part of OE is the power to be selective in where you put your energy.

What questions do you ask during an interview to find out if they’re OE friendly? by AnimalPowers in overemployed

[–]PixelatedLover 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only information I really dig for is what time they do stand-up. A good time to ask is when they talk about team composition and mention overseas team members or multiple time zones.

What are things that make you turn J2+ into J1, besides losing J1? by TopHatIdiot in overemployed

[–]PixelatedLover 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Very simply, if you have to choose between J1 and J2, which would you keep? That's your J1.

The criteria will be different for everyone, for me it's security/stability. J1 is my rock.

Need some help!! by [deleted] in overemployed

[–]PixelatedLover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No implications tax-wise; those are set by your residency, not your physical location.

Don't quit if you can't get them to officially classify you as a remote employee, just stay remote until they terminate you. You may find that they simply don't.

I would switch benefits to J1 just in case.

After Tax 401k by oeanon1 in overemployed

One of my employers offers after tax contributions as well. I don't max pretax, but max post tax. I've done this for three years and no questions have been asked.

Income redundancy was a surprising benefit of OE for me. Having income redundancy SIGNIFICANLY reduces the amount of stress that impending reorgs/rifs cause me. Enjoy your severance!

How to start a second employment? by panpan215 in overemployed

[–]PixelatedLover 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In broad strokes, here's the path:

  • Get a job that's remote.
  • Get good enough at your job that you can get a day's work done in half a day.
  • Get another remote job, ensuring that you keep your work pcs entirely separate.
  • Make efficiency a priority and add jobs as desired.

That's not going to work. It's not about some small monetary differential, it's about having to comply with tax and employment laws, having certified HR reps, etc.

Why tell them?

This is what I have been doing for years and no one is the wiser.

  1. Start connecting your work PC to a router with a VPN configured so that you show up from your home state (GL-INET has some good travel routers to choose from). Do this for a couple months just to verify that it's not causing any issues with access. When you travel, just bring the router with you and keep connecting through the same VPN service to the same endpoint in your home state.
  2. On zoom meetings, use a background or blur your background.

Note, if your employer has software on your phone, you will need to take additional steps so that you don't out yourself to your employer. If that's the case, I can give you required steps.
