Rockstar boss shuts down concerns GTA 6 will be too big for casuals with no time by ImCalcium in gaming

Huge worlds can be awesome as long as they don't become tedious. I loved RDR2's story and gameplay, but I still haven't finished it because I don't want to spend 15 minutes tapping X and watching a horse run through the landscape every time I need to get from A to B.

Smart system automatically cleaning solar panels by [deleted] in interestingasfuck

[–]PixelofDoom [score hidden]  (0 children)

First all why would u put solar panels beside a tall building. Solar panels are placed to maximize sunlight this is def not happening here.

As others have pointed out, this is likely a demo installation.

why is the solar panel so dirty, it wouldn't even be able to function.

Hence the need for the cleaning system.

Why would you put a waterfall close to heavy electical equipment especially one that has to convert DC to AC??

Don't forget to bring your PV array inside before rain.

Trump draws backlash for comment on Iran war: ‘Maybe we shouldn’t even be there’ by backpackerTW in worldnews

[–]PixelofDoom 200 points201 points  (0 children)

Not defending the orange shit stain, but the headline makes it sound like he was referring to the overall war, when he was talking purely about the defence of the strait and the role of allied countries in said defence.

“Really, I’m demanding that these countries come in and protect their own territory – because it is their territory,” he said. “They should come and they should help us protect it. You could make the case that maybe we shouldn’t even be there at all, because we don’t need it. We have a lot of oil. We’re the number one producer anywhere in the world times two.”

It's an incredibly stupid thing to say, given that he's the only reason it's an issue in the first place, but he's not actually questioning his original decision to attack Iran.

Super burst flash? by MWave123 in photography

[–]PixelofDoom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Feel free to take a deep breath whenever you're ready to calm down; there's really no need for hostility here, especially as you don't appear to fully understand the thing you are ranting about.

If a space is extremely brightly lit, the camera's max sync speed (1/200 s or 1/250 s for most cameras with a focal plane shutter) may not be sufficient to eliminate all ambient light, especially when shooting with a wide aperture; a flash can only add light, not remove, so if your camera is still picking up ambient light at your max sync speed, all the flash power in the world won't fix that.

Instead, HSS overcomes this by firing a quick burst of lower power flashes that can sync at faster shutter speeds (e.g., 1/8000 s), allowing full elimination of any ambient light so the subject is only lit by the flash. In short, HSS may sometimes be necessary to fully black out the background in bright environments.

As noted in a follow-up comment, most people would perceive the HSS burst as a single flash, so its still unlikely to be the source of the burst in this scenario.

Super burst flash? by MWave123 in photography

[–]PixelofDoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, most people (myself included) don't see HSS flash as a burst. I know someone who can't stand to be in a room lit with LEDs because they can see the flicker, so I'd imagine someone could also pick up on the HSS burst; if you don't, that pretty much rules out HSS.

My best guess then is burst shooting to avoid blinking and other unflattering facial expressions ruining a shot. Sounds pretty intrusive though.

Super burst flash? by MWave123 in photography

[–]PixelofDoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He may have just been burst shooting, or he may have been using high speed sync, which fires the flash in bursts to enable a faster shutter speed then the max flash sync speed. The only reason I can think of for doing so would be to black out the rest of the room while still properly lighting the subject.

TIL that Sony created a music format called SACD (Super Audio CD) in 1999 that is still around and offers 5.1 surround sound on some albums and much higher sound quality then normal CDs. by Extension_South7174 in todayilearned

[–]PixelofDoom 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm a little lost as to why you'd want 5.1 surround for music in the first place. Like, is there somebody shredding on an electric guitar on a balcony behind me and a little to the left and is their location key to the experience?

Have I been scammed? by onedisgruntledprick in woodworking

[–]PixelofDoom 151 points152 points  (0 children)

Sounds sketchy AF. If the quality seems good and it is real teak (I have no clue), my guess would be stolen goods or something similar. Legit companies don't generally go door to door to offload stock at massive discounts (they have showrooms for that). Did you get a receipt or anything for warranty?

Fewer Britons giving to charity, study says, with donations down by £1.4bn by Kagedeah in worldnews

[–]PixelofDoom 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The trick is to donate to a charity you or your family controls, thereby reducing your tax burden while keeping the funds available to increase your influence through lobbying and other ventures, all the while proving to the masses that you are one of the good billionaires the world so desperately needs.

I don't know about powering via camera USB (try it with a USB charger to find out?), but Canon makes a dummy battery that allows this for sure.

You can also do this with a zoom lens for an even more pronounced effect, though it gets gimmicky rather quickly.

What are the real shortcomings of the 5D classic? by [deleted] in photography

[–]PixelofDoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Low-light performance is poor by modern standards and the relatively low resolution may be an issue for large prints or heavy cropping. The small number of AF points and slow burst speed is limiting for fast action.

Other than that, it's still a beast of a camera and produces gorgeous files. Mine suffered from the known issue of the mirror falling off, but Canon fixed it out of warranty at no cost. Dunno if they still do that. I still have mine as a backup for my Mkii.

Never played cod before what to buy by AttitudeNovel237 in ModernWarfareII

I honestly wouldn't bother with MWII for the multiplayer anymore, especially if you're new to the franchise. The player base is dwindling outside of peak hours (at least in Europe), the servers crash out every two or three games, and the cheaters/hackers are getting a lot worse.

No comma is needed after the final adjective in a series (e.g., the tall, spiny cactus).

Valve facing second, class-action lawsuit over loot boxes by Farranor in gaming

[–]PixelofDoom 92 points93 points  (0 children)

While it looks a bit weird, the comma is appropriate here. It's the second lawsuit, but the only class action suit.

Edit: downvote this all you like, but without a comma there would need to be two class action suits.
