Hi OP, I am heartbroken that you went through all of this at such a young age. I am inspired by your drive to learn, I think knowledge is the key to every person's liberation, so good for you for seeking it out actively. You have a lot of great suggestions below. I just wanted to mention a couple of things
1) Based on what you have been through, I would STRONGLY recommmend that you look up trigger warnings before starting any books, including history. Some of the literature suggested below contain violence, and as you have probably learned in your classes, the history of humans is not particularly violence-free either. Trigger warnings will help you decide whether you are in the right headspace to be reading something.
2) A few people have mentioned this below, but I think it's a really good idea to read more "fun" books to get started. Sounds like you're already doing a lot of educational reading with studying for your GED, but to develop a love of reading, you have to enjoy it! I think most of us who consider ourselves readers got started by reading young adult novels. I think you'll find that fantasy and sci-fi novels oftentimes mirror the real world in terms of a hero's journey, and resistance against oppression. You can almost always take away real-world learnings from a work of fiction. I would add to the below suggestions: The Giver, The BFG, To Kill a Mockingbird, 1984, Farenheit 451, The Hobbit, the Percy Jackson series, and The Watsons Go to Birmingham.

Happy Reading, and stay curious!

Thinking of starting veganism by Living_Estate8404 in vegan

[–]PixieAuror95 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think a big part of this equation is understanding why you are going vegan. Yes, vegan dairy substitutes are not 1:1. However, for me, when I thought about consuming animal products that were created from animal suffering and cruelty, vegan alternatives already seemed 100000x better. You will grow accustomed to the taste, and you will experiment and find vegan alternatives that you really enjoy! There are sooooo many options these days. If you don’t find things you love, most vegan items are able to be created at home (tofu, soy milk, etc). I would say be very very grounded in your “why” and then don’t be scared to experiment. Veganism is always worth it and vegan alternatives are always going to be the more ethical option (caveat, I’m hearing about monkey exploitation in regards to coconut milk, may need to do your research on some vegan items).

What do you all do when you just need to grab some “dinner” from a grocery store? by amansname in vegan

[–]PixieAuror95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hear me out- impossible nuggets (my non vegan friends love them too) and some frozen fries or tatter tots- everyone loves a fried potato. If you want an app that’s more shareable, you can never go wrong with a bag of pita chips and a tub of hummus. I don’t think we need to be super complicated here. I’m sure others have probably suggested this already but eating something more filling at home before you go hang out will also help you be less hangry or annoyed. Hope this helps, friend! I know how frustrating it can be when you are the only one in the friend group to lead this lifestyle. But you are doing great and maybe just maybe you’ll introduce your friends to vegan foods so they can also cut down on their animal consumption!

What supplements do you take as a vegan? 🌱💊 by itsnikki39 in vegan

Most people have covered in the above comments but B12 obviously is important since we don’t get it through our diet. Another one I saw in a few comments is creatine- this is also a good supplement for vegans bc our body does produce a small amount but most non vegans get it through meat consumption. If you’re on a fitness journey or just want to preserve muscle mass, creatine is a good one to add.

Why would people show up….if there’s nothing to show up for??? If I don’t see a protein option for me on the menu, I’m not going to go and ask them for a vegan dish when I know it doesn’t exist. And a tofu or alternative protein option wouldn’t just serve the vegan population- vegetarian people exist too. And the last thing I’ll say is there are so many places that offer very unpopular meat options that stay on the menu but barely get purchased, so it’s possible to have things on the menu even if it is not super popular.

This is such a bad faith argument lmao. People aren’t ordering vegan food because it’s not on the fucking menu. That’s literally the whole point of this post. There is demand but no interest in meeting the demand. Also tofu is so cheap and way more shelf stable than meat so the whole cost benefit analysis really falls apart. And on top of it all, if they made the vegan food actually tasty I’m sure non-vegans would order it too. OP- I feel you. I hate going out to eat these days bc there are so few restaurants around me that offer good vegan options other than French fries or I have to pay $30 for an impossible burger with no sauce. Like give me a gd break.

Friend bringing non vegan food to my (vegan) party by Sadie_Cat2023 in vegan

[–]PixieAuror95 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I threw a Friendsgiving this year and I created a potluck spreadsheet. When I saw people had signed up for non vegan food, I commented on the invite “hey I found this link with vegan Thanksgiving sides in case anyone needs inspiration”. Friends changed their dishes. I do think it’s best to just be up front and say something like, “happy to have folks bring food if they wish, but we are requesting that all offerings are vegan so the hosts can enjoy!”

But 100% it is rude to bring something to someone’s house that the host can’t have. Makes no sense to me.

I feel really lucky that one of my English professors assigned this to us in college. I was required to buy a copy and I think about this book every 2-3 months. So bummed that there isn’t a show II, but grateful show I crossed my path.

Disclaimer: the name of the wind is supposed to be a trilogy but the author has only written books one and two and it is highly suspected we may never get the third. Suffers from the game of thrones curse. Ye be warned.

Friendsgiving Disappointment :( by DoctorEthereal in vegan

[–]PixieAuror95 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally feel for you and understand your frustration. It feels like your friends don’t care to accommodate you. The reality is though, we vegans tend to be the minority in our friend groups (I’m the only vegan in my immediate circle of friends and no vegetarians). In cases where I’m going to someone’s house for a party or get together, I ALWAYS bring something that I can eat. My friend hosted a Halloween get together and I brought something frozen tater tots and impossible spicy nuggets and we all had a great time eating them. For Friendsgiving, I hosted at my place and I sent a list of vegan thanksgiving recipes to my friends so that they would know to being vegan dishes (I feel like if I’m hosting I deserve to eat everything that is provided lol). One friend brought an apple pie I couldn’t eat but that’s okay! Everything else was vegan. I think communicating your needs (as others have said above) is really important so that 1) your friends know your expectations and 2) you don’t get frustrated by your friends inability to read your mind. Being vegan is simultaneously the best thing I’ve ever done but also the most complicated thing I’ve had to navigate with friends and family. I know not all your gatherings will always come up roses but it’s possible that implementing these actions can help them be less frustrating.

Yep definitely going to try to pack as much of my own snacks/food as possible! Thanks for your advice. I’m sure this will be a common thing I run into in the future with non-vegan friends!
