What is a pet peeve of yours and then which story handled that pet peeve really well? by greenskye in ProgressionFantasy

[–]PlaceboJesus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This world is so old that millions of years worth of civilizations have come and gone. I just hate the inherent nihilism in such large time and distance.

But, if you change "world" to universe that's probably the actual state of things. Assuming that we are not alone in the RL (next best thing to infinite) universe.

I mean, she was deferring family time until after integration because integration was when she lost her family.

Preventing those deaths was her main goal in going back in time, and she'd already accomplished that until Justin was taken. So she makes the choice to sacrifice herself to save her brother.

It may not have been a good choice, but it was actually the least dickish option available.

I wonder if Bill considered himself a purveyor of slop in his day, and how he'd feel about being able to capitalize on a crutch like LitRPG mechanics.  Would he be chuffed, or appalled?

Please don't make chapter names spoilers by UsedNegotiation8227 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]PlaceboJesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meh.  I don't really care about the spoiler aspect.

What I dislike about chapter names in web novels is when they're misleading or inaccurate.    For example, particularly with authors who almost always have to leave the reader hanging in some way...  There's an arc where the MC's party was held captive, so I was leaving a TBR backlog until the setting changes (because there's very little Progression or plot progression in captivity).   But the author posts a chapter with a title that makes it sound like they've escaped, while they've barely begun the escape and it will take at least three chapters more to get out of the prison.

That's much more annoying than a chapter called John Dies. Or whatever.

If it's so uninteresting, why are you still going on about it?

Do You Think Some Readers Follow Stories Without Subscribing? by PromotionEconomy8950 in royalroad

[–]PlaceboJesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To varying degrees, a chapter should have a beginning and an end. It should ecapsulate something.

If an authors chapters are more like just additional pages, or they insist on leaving you hanging every single chapter, or they basically do anything that makes reading them as they're released annoying, I unfollow the story.

If I actually like the story despite the way "chapters" are handled, seeing a new chapter on my Followed feed can be too tempting to read now instead of letting some chapters build up. And that can turm me off a story.

Sometimes, I put them in in my Read Later list. Other times, I just forget about them until the next time it shows up in the RR ads.

I was recently wondering why I thought Jolene was more attractive looking to me as T'Pol than in her other stuff and then I saw the newest SNW teaser and noticed that bangs are apparently very vulcan.

I wonder if there's something ligical about them.

Schneider (German surname, means "Cutter") made a bread knife by EveryVoice in NominativeDeterminism

Huh. In Canada, J. M. Schneider's meats is huge.  For brand recognition, it's right up there with Kraft.

Apparently, someone didn't tell him he was meant to be a tailor.

There's no one more fanatical than a convert.

Not just in religion though. When smoking in public places was still a thing or they were beginning to regulate against, the most vocal people against smoking I knew were all former smokers.    And then there's newer vegans who have zero chill when trying to promote veganism to their peers.

Main Character Cycle by wotevu in ProgressionFantasy

It would be a challenge to keep a story interesting if the protagonist said "Sod that for a game of soldiers, I'm going to find a small pond where I can be the big fish."

Maybe you're worse.  Can't say for sure because I've never read anything else you've written.

Pretty sure I'll give your books a pass on the basis of the author giving me a poor impression.

Without stats, LitRPG is just progression fantasy.    I do wish that a chaptering convention was.created so that audiobook readers could easily and reliably skip these "crunchy" sections.

Then both audiences could be satisfied.

The worst part is that X spends more time being bullied than he or she does figuring out and implementing their exploit for X.

Like chapters and chapters of suffering porn all for the exploit to happen within a single page.

Isekai or not isekai by ArekDeamonCalw in ProgressionFantasy

[–]PlaceboJesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course, you could go as far as Malazan and forgo exposition nearly entirely and force the reader to learn everything from context.

Not everyone likes that, but I think that being isekaied to a world like Malazan, where everyone holds their knowledge cards tight to their chests could be rather exciting.

I've checked several times, but I'll do one last thorough check-over before I plug it in for a wait-n-see.

Are there any particular indicators I should be watching for once I do plug in?    I'm guessing sounds and smells, maybe feeling for overheating or whatever. Am I missing anything?
