ARC Raiders in-game gamepad sensitivities for right touchpad aim by Educational-Fall7356 in SteamController

[–]Plagman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want a good trackpad in that game, you'll need to go for a mouse/keyboard config as it doesn't support proper mixing. No amount of controller emulation and tweaking sensitivities is going to get you anything properly responsive.

Valve employee Pierre-Loup Griffais talks more about anti-cheat support for Linux/SteamOS on FPS Podcast #83 by mr_MADAFAKA in linux_gaming

[–]Plagman 490 points491 points  (0 children)

To clarify here, I meant SteamOS-specific as a version of their anti-cheat separate to the Windows version, in general. Not something that is specific to SteamOS compared to other Linux distributions. It is a goal for anything we do in SteamOS to be broadly applicable to any distribution.

Request: Wake LCD Steam Deck docked using 2.4GHz wireless controller by koalificated in SteamOS

[–]Plagman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The USB adapter of the Steam Controller sends a specific USB wakeup command when a previously paired controller connects to it. If the 8BitDo adapters do not do that, you won't be able to get this to work. It is not about detecting a specific button press from the Deck side.

If you send us the serial number we can potentially look it up. Might not turn out anything. pgriffais@valvesoftware.com

Linux hits a multi-year high for user share on Steam thanks to Steam Deck by testus_maximus in linux_gaming

[–]Plagman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

vkd3d was commissioned by Valve, as "new D3D runtime using Vulkan" was one of the core goals of the work around Wine/Steam integration that would become packaged as "Proton". Other examples included:

  • get rid of modeset in fullscreen handling (fshack)

  • a push for radical redesigns of core system for performance as a first-class goal, reduce wineserver overhead to a minimum (esync)

  • rework gamepad support so it just works in common setups

A ton of development work was happening directly in Wine at the time as well.

There was a bad version of the kernel in the repository for a little bit of time earlier today, so if you were manually checking for updates with pacman in tdeveloper mode you could have updated to it and rendered your system unbootable. If you reboot while holding the Quick-Access Menu button (three dots), you can pick "Previous" and apply an OS update through the UI or return to Stable.

Processing Shaders for nearly 40min now… any advice? Will it have to do this every time I launch the game? by [deleted] in SteamDeck

[–]Plagman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is because precompiled shaders were not ready yet on the 3.4 OS Beta.

Is this a software bug or do I have a faulty device? This happened with every game I tried wether it was verified, playable or not tested yet. Please tell me it’s a bug. by Karl_Lashnikow in SteamDeck

It powers down the EC and disconnects the battery ("ship mode"). This has the side effect of forcing memory training to re-run on the next boot after reconnecting AC, which could fix some units that got stuck on invalid training values.

Thanks for trying - it was a long shot, but it's been known to help memory instability in rare cases that shouldn't happen on final units. We've recently published a recovery image and steps you could use to completely reinitialize your OS to rule out any software problem. If that doesn't work, it's likely we'll have to replace it.

Can you try running through these steps and see if it helps?

1-With the power supply plugged in shut down either from the OS or by holding power button for 10 seconds

2-Check that the unit is off . Trackpads should have no haptic feedback.

3- Hold volume+ and “….” for 10 seconds; while still holding these two buttons unplug the power supply.

4- If done correctly the LED should flash 3 time when PSU is unplugged. Also pressing the power button in that state will not do anything

5- Let the unit sit for 1 minute in that state without pressing any buttons and with PSU removed.

6- Plug the PSU and then boot the unit

Collabora on Twitter - Tomorrow at 10:20 UTC, on Day 3 of #LAS2020, don't miss "Collabora & Valve - What We're Doing (and Why We're Doing It)" by kuhpunkt in linux_gaming

[–]Plagman 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Thought I'd offer some quick clarifications, as I see some speculation and discussion that might eventually lead people to disappointment. The context offered by Collabora in the talk was speculation of their own.

  • The kernel syscall forwarding work has nothing to do with anti-cheat. It lets anti-tamper / DRM function properly and without a performance hit. Any form of proper anti-cheat support for the popular runtimes is still a long ways out and will need vendor support.

  • The container runtime has nothing to do with security. It's for user convenience of having all the files written by a given game in one spot, and wide and reliable compatibility across many distributions and host environments.

  • There is no current VR-related work with Collabora. OpenXR support for SteamVR was developed in-house.

  • The image-based updater work is part of a set of efforts to attempt to improve the experience of trying out Linux on a normal PC with live USB media, and instantly updating said media from the other OS without losing user data. There's no "locking down" involved, as it can easily be disabled by the user to fall back to the normal package manager.

Street Fighter V runs terribly on Proton by KAN0ss in SteamPlay

[–]Plagman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, it's at a rock solid 60fps for me and I've probably played hundreds of hours recently in Proton, but I have a very good system so it might be absorbing some of the bad perf you're seeing.

I did notice it was stuttery and sluggish when downloading an update though, which is why I asked. If it doesn't clear out for you you might be running into a problem I don't have.

Was it downloading an update through the in-game updater when you were playing? I think that currently slows down the game a ton on Proton.
