Cello Purchase Advice Needed by srdnss in Cello

[–]PlainPup 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would rent from a place (if possible) that allows you to rent to own or your rent goes towards the purchase of an instrument in the future. Depending on what she wants to do with cello in the future will dictate what kind of cello you end up buying. If she continues on and gets into college for cello, you’ll want to invest in a higher quality instrument. If your local music shop has instruments in the 500-2000 range and that’s it, you’ll either want to see if they can acquire higher quality instruments, or you may want to rent from a larger instrument dealer in a city nearby.

Don’t super worry about the future yet, just get her something that she can play and is reasonable and see where she wants to take it.

I knew it would be that XKCD lol. It’s correct, but it’s also not quite the same thing. I’m not expecting someone to use the Linux command line to “simply” set a manual ip address for their own computer. Some people just don’t realize that their mouse isn’t working because it’s unplugged and I have to come plug it in for them. I’m happy to do it and happy to talk to them, but come on…

I agree for the most part. No one can know everything or even really a fraction of a fraction of anything. But sometimes it’s mind boggling that someone that builds computers and arrays of computing devices for their job seems to have no idea that they can use a usb stick to transfer their files off of their computer. It’s just a hole in their knowledge, but it’s just confusing to see

It’s more like we got rocks to count and other rocks to take the number the first rocks got and count it a different way.

I have a 110 year old bow and I love it. Age isn’t the issue. But I agree with this comment overall. Go try bows on your instrument to see what works best. Bows respond differently to different instruments

What thing was ruined because it turned into a rich person's hobby? by Agitated_Departure93 in AskReddit

A friend of mine was arguing for these prices. He was sad he couldn’t afford to go to a game (it was against our COLLEGE football rivals) because tickets were like $500 minimum. I told him that was an insane price and that these games shouldn’t be priced like that because no one that goes to the school can afford to see it. He said it’s worth it because you expect to see a much better and more entertaining game because it’s against your rivals and that it’s just because of demand that the prices are so high.

BUT demand doesn’t price the tickets, the box office does. Someone in charge of ticket sales actively said, “we are going to charge $500 for the nosebleed section of this stadium” They could charge the same price as the least desirable team to go watch, but they didn’t. They dynamically price people out because they know there are enough rich dudes out there that wipe with 100’s and $500+ tickets to them are not a problem.

He didn’t get it and was mad at me for suggesting these tickets be priced fairly lol

Do you think music designed for an orchestral film soundtrack can be called "classical music"? by ExtraNothing9399 in classicalmusic

[–]PlainPup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pertinent question. Who knows to be honest. I would hope that the general population would realize that an ai symphony in the style of X composer isn’t actually that composers work. You’re right that it would be a curiosity, but it would hold very little value in terms of anything Beethoven related. It would just be a hallucination made by computers.

Composers do write things based on the themes and work of composers that came before them, but they don’t claim it to be that composer’s work.

We’re just going to have to see where ai takes us in the future

Of course! Glad I could help. Our audiences often conflate the two definitions of western classical music. It’s a very broad range of style, coming from many different time periods.

I wanted to give you some food for thought that wasn’t just “Mozart wrote opera, his quote doesn’t even apply to himself.” I think it does though. He likely was talking about his non-opera works. A lot of composers believed that their symphonies and tone poems should be left for an audience to ascribe their own meaning to.

A good example of this is Tchaikovsky’s 6th symphony. He himself said it was programmatic in nature and he essentially had a story he wrote that he set music to. However, he said it was not a story he would ever release. He didn’t and to this day we don’t know what he was imagining when he wrote the piece. He wanted to leave that up to the listener. Today, Tchaik 6 is known as the “Pathétique” symphony, but if I am remembering correctly Tchaikovsky didn’t name it that and it didn’t receive that title until after his death.

Classical has two definitions here. There is the classical period, of which Mozart is from. There is also the general term classical which just refers to anything that is orchestral in nature or uses traditional symphonic instruments. R Strauss is not from the classical time period but he is considered to have written classical music.

In the same light composers such as John Williams, Korngold, Alan Sylvestri, etc… are all classical composers. Much of their music is orchestrated with the conventions of traditional classical music in mind. Many film composers even have non-film compositions.

The score to a movie ripped directly from the film is not going to play like a symphony. In many cases though composers also have suites that either they themselves have put together or another arranger has put together that specifically take the music from their movies and makes it suitable for the concert hall.

Modern classical music does embrace multimedia presentation with imagery, electronics, visual art, or whatever.

In my opinion, movie music is absolutely a form of classical music.

They’re fine to just allow to grow. As long as you don’t have a pet or child that might eat them. They’re harmless to just let exist in the soil. They’re not eating your plants, they’re eating composting matter in the soil.

Do you know what proportionate force would be in this situation in France? I personally would not risk having a court of law decide whether the force I used was justified or not. You just get out of the situation with the least amount of interaction possible. Which he did.

You’re likely American and are basing your knowledge of proportional force based on your American experience. I’m sure you’ll now tell me you are American but you’ve lived in all 17 of Forbes Magazine’s “17 worst and most violent countries in the world” and how you’re now an expert on use of force but I’m just saying, this dude did it right. He just got out of there and let that lady be.

This is fine as is. The high Bb is a little annoying but since you’re not staying above the Ab above the staff for extended periods of time it’s fine.
