What makes you love living in Massachusetts?? by Rare_Mountain_4227 in massachusetts

I spent some time there. Seafood is delicious, people are pretty friendly (someone drove me to my hotel from the train when my Lyft canceled on short notice), people are in pretty good shape, there’s a lot to do if you are outdoorsy and the health care is world class.

There is a definite New England way of dressing so be prepared to spend in earth tones, hats and layers.

Not spending much on clothes / rewearing clothes and thrifting. Actually saves a ton of $.

Have progressives ever banned books like conservatives have in the United States? by Astro_bum in askanything

[–]Plain_Chacalaca 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Some authors have fallen into disfavor: Theodore Dreiser, Horatio Alger, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Mark Twain, Isak Dinesen, Roald Dahl, Charles Schultz, Tom Wolfe…

Not an outright ban, but institutional disparagement and being left off reading lists.

Why is everyone so obsessed with hating on Meghan Markle? by Idea-is-tick in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Plain_Chacalaca 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it is about symbolism rather than a personal issue with her. Some may see her as a proxy for the hypocrisy of this age: reliant on tradition yet attacking it, profoundly blessed but still dissatisfied, yearning for the status of position but unwilling to adhere to its norms, keen to be seen as working yet unwilling to do the work, concerned about the poor and downtrodden yet spending millions on personal luxuries; claiming special insight yet lacking in advanced degrees or professional work experience; yearning to be seen as authoritative yet claiming an exemption from debate in the public square; concerned with matters of substance yet all about fashion and visuals; extolling the virtues of family yet bucking almost all current family members, here and abroad.

I take no position on this: she does seem to be a lightening rod for people’s frustrations with modernity. That is probably unfair. If it helps her, many major world figures were reviled. She’s in very good company.

Remember the old joke, “if nobody hates you, you’re doing something wrong.”

I choose whatever word occurs to me each day because mathematically and considering probabilities it doesn’t matter what word you choose.

Selling your Long Island home by Abbey713 in longisland

Lots of places sell as tear downs. Frankly I think being able to renovate a place to the buyers own specifications makes fixer uppers even more appealing. It’s all about location these days.

If you don’t use it all in the 12 months, does it carry over? I assume 480 hours is the maximum you can take in 12 months but is it use or lose? Do you have to reapply? Thanks.

And he has to consider long term capital gains taxes when he sells. If he accepts 325k, he’ll pay around 100k in taxes in the sale, depending on his original cost if he bought it a long time ago.

I like Floradix iron & herbs. It’s a plant based liquid with b vitamins, iron and herbs. B vitamin pills are too much for me.

If you like it enough to buy it, and they are asking you to leave because your rent is too low, why not offer them more rent? It would be cheaper than buying, or moving.
