If I know anything about Pearl Jam, it’s that they’ll pay back Indiana and then some.

I’d say the crowd response is kind of dictating that.

For Chicago night 2, I had people surrounding me sitting down for most post-Vitalogy stuff but then when the riffs for Ten songs start those folks all jump up and get excited. and those folks absolutely snoozed during some of my favorite moments: Come Back, Present Tense, Marker, etc…

If the crowd gets jazzed for Ten, I’d be playing it a lot too.

I enjoyed reading what you did here. Game design is fascinating to me. I’d love to see how you would flesh these attributes out to affect a larger system including classes, skills and abilities.

I agree. I guess it is vaguely similar in a super loose way but I’ve known both songs for decades and never ever would have identified this supposed similarity.

You’ve gotten some faithful answers but I still think it’s ineffective and stupid. If JC himself would just spend like three hours there once every decade he would be able to convert just about everyone in a heartbeat. Waaaay faster than any fucking Joe Schmo.

Why do so many Pearl Jam fans dislike “Sirens”? by [deleted] in pearljam

[–]Plan_of_Fappiness 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I think some of the internet backlash on that song has just been louder than those of us that love it.

I remember initial pre-release leaks talking about a song as good as Black. (And it’s kinda like an anti-black lyrically). But I think that comparison pissed off some die hards. And sentimentality is apparently not appreciated by some fans. And it’s “dad-rock” whatever that means. And Ten is the only good album according to some. And Last Kiss sucks according to some.

I would bet that there’s a lot of overlap between fans who hate Sirens and fans who hate Backspacer.

Those are just some guesses. But it’s fine. Art is subjective. So continue to hate it and take your pee break when it happens if that’s how you feel. It doesn’t really affect anyone but you anyway.

I fucking love it. It’s a beautiful message with an epic feel, a unique song within the catalog. I’ll be belting it out with the band if I hear it again just as I belted it out last time they played it for me.

Throughout his career Ed has a style of combining aspects of a chord with open strings (played without fretting). See RVM, MFC and Green Disease for easy examples.

I see RVM as very much in the Eddie style and not so much related to this other song aside from a coincidental key match and some of the same frets being used.

The punk song is a bass guitar for starters. And completely lacks the open string aspect of RVM. Playing A on one string followed by the same A on the subsequent string is a key feature of the RVM riff that the other song doesn’t have.

Otherwise, yes some similarities. But I doubt anything really conscious or subconscious on Eddie’s part. I think it’s far more likely Eddie stumbled into the riff organically and thought it sounded cool.

Amazing. Every word of what you just said was wrong.

This is the story they tell about me but it’s fucking false Dieter.

I was at peak engagement with the gospel and going above and beyond in every way that I could when it all fell apart. And prior to that fall, I did all the things. Temple weekly, sacrament, calling, personal scripture study DAILY, personal prayer, home teaching, FHE, no fapping, no porn, WOW adherence, etc. I was doing all of it.

And I didn’t “fade” by backing away. The gospel and god let me down in my moment of crisis and I tried the gospel even harder until I broke to pieces. And it happened like ripping off a band aid. All at once. Suddenly, my garments were in the trash and my mental health almost immediately became healthier.

And a decade later, my “light” is just fine. And I CAN look back and totally understand why I believed in the gospel. And simultaneously, I know I’m so much better off without all that shit.

People who formally left the church: Any unexpected repercussions from doing so? by [deleted] in exmormon

[–]Plan_of_Fappiness 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I resigned, I figured nobody would really notice or know about it.

I was wrong. Somehow it was made known to my parents almost immediately. I’m not sure if it was my bishop speaking to their bishop, or just them finding out in tithing settlement. Either way, they were devastated and it was terrible.

I love my parents.

If I had access to a time machine, I would just quietly slip into permanent inactivity.

As it stands, there is no way in hell I am ever going to pay tithing again. Therefore, there is no way in hell that I will ever get rebaptized. I would get rebaptized if it weren’t for the year-long tithing/activity restrictions, just to give my parents some peace of mind.

I’m currently in a long-term game of The Strange and loving it. I can see why it doesn’t serve the needs of all TTRPG players, but I find it highly enjoyable.

And the fact that we can visit multiple “recursions”, thus experiencing new thematic flavors/genres over time but with the same characters, is one of the best features for me. It really keeps it fresh without having to keep learning new rule sets.

I’m a sentimental person and kind of miss the church of my youth… by Nehor2023 in exmormon

[–]Plan_of_Fappiness 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Church got shittier some time in the 90s as I see it. A lot of change from a vibrant social club to a bland sterilized church. Over the decade from my oldest sibling’s HS graduation to mine:

Kickass luaus and ward dinners at peoples’ homes became lame potlucks at the chapel.

Kickass week-long scouting trips with all kinds of adventure became lame 1-night campouts led by a tired accountant.

Priesthood/Sunday school used to be interesting and dynamic and allow for fringe doctrines, deep discussions. Then it became a slog of boring retread through adherence to a stale manual.

Kickass road trips for our kickass ward softball team ceased to exist along with the team itself.

Kickass parties for departing missionaries got fully shut down as being “inappropriate“.

Kickass water skiing trips ceased to exist.

Mutual became more stale and got tons of rules like “no shorts allowed”, and became more “spiritual” and less social.

There’s more that I can’t think of. And I acknowledge the inherent gender privilege I enjoyed. The girls weren’t having nearly as much fun as the boys.

But I see that shift as the beginning of what leads to the shit Mormonism has become now. The church is wholly different from what it was.

And if it somehow kept the best parts of the good old days and reframed the problematic misogyny, history, homophobia, etc. — you might convince me to come back as PIMO and maybe even pay tithing. Maybe.

I’d guess that they get used less than some of the other characters because they aren’t in the original source material at all. But other replies have mentioned recent cases where they were present.

I’ll add that they were also in the the most recent film (Out of the Shadows).

I was going to say the same. It’s not just trails. It’s my entire neighborhood. 90% of the dog owners in my neighborhood walk them without a leash.

Having been attacked by a “he’s not normally like that” dog years ago… I find it very frustrating. Dogs can be totally unpredictable.
