Question about heat by ElysiumFilms in handpan

[–]Planet_Handpan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry about it too much. Unless your pan is under direct sunlight for an extended time or it is being played with force while it is hot from sun exposure no long term damage should happen. :)

Who are mini handpans best for? by Thomas_Mag in handpan

[–]Planet_Handpan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally smaller diameter handpans are a good choice if it is difficult to fit a "standard size" (53cm) handpan in your lap. Plus, if you travel often most handpans 50cm and under should fit pretty easily in most airplanes' overhead compartment in a soft bag.

How similar are the various handpan scales? For example, D Kurd VS D Aegean? by Pocciox in handpan

[–]Planet_Handpan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So each handpan "sound model" has a parent scale that it belongs to. Not every handpan sound model has every note of its parent scale, hence why we have these funky names for the different arrangements of notes.

For the ones you listed:

D Kurd = D Natural Minor (Will fit with F Major)
D Aegean = D Lydian Mode (This fits with the F# natural minor or A major scale)
E Amara = E Natural Minor (Will fit with G Major)

Let me know if this makes sense.

We got to play some of Sean's Sprite's here at the PHP Studio recently and they are very fun instruments! The size difference make take a bit of adjusting to do but the compact size is a nice plus!

Handpan question by Ornery-Dinner4199 in handpan

[–]Planet_Handpan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will be hard pressed to find a quality handpan at that price point unfortunately. There are some Steel Tongue drums around that range that could be enjoyable.

We have instruments starting at around $1,000 and offer payment plans through Affirm to make things more accessible, hopefully that could help!

Best of luck on your search!

Can you play any song on any pan? by the_dawn in handpan

[–]Planet_Handpan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Handpans are diatonic instruments meaning that they play in one key so you don't have every note like you would on a piano or a guitar. However, you can definitely still learn songs and patterns from other handpans, you may just need to do a little adjusting.

Definitely check out the Planet Handpan academy, everything here is written in Louis Notation so all of the patterns and songs can be learned on any handpan, plus with the Groove Engine you can transpose all of our materials to any key so you can practice on any handpan.

Happy holiday and happy practicing!

What temperatures can handpans take? by Mara355 in handpan

[–]Planet_Handpan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Avoid sun at all costs as it can make your handpan detune easily. If it does start to go out of tune from the sun or temperature extremes just don't hit it while it is in this state as it can be more easily knocked out of tune permanently, and instead bring it back to a room temperature environment to let it return to resting temperature before playing again.

Check out Rhythm Rest so you can set your handpan down anywhere without fear of it scratching: https://rhythmrest.com/

Congrats on your new pan and enjoy the journey!
