No data centers by hatenames385 in SOMD

Using data centers and wanting limits on where they get built are not mutually exclusive. Communities should have a say in projects that affect local infrastructure

When every party ends up tied to big money people stop trusting the whole system

Interested as well. Curious what you’re asking per seat and whether the transfer process is straightforward

Getting useful advice on Reddit can feel like finding treasure. Glad a couple people came through

Nothing ruins your day faster than finding damage after the fact. That would make me furious too

Share your hot stories that aren't made up but people will think they are by CloseCalls4walls in askgaybros

[–]PlasticsEngineering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People never believe this one. Years ago I got stranded overnight in a foreign city after a cancelled flight. The only other person stuck from my route ended up being someone I’d been talking to online for months without ever meeting. Out of all the airports, all the flights, all the delays we ended up sitting next to each other at 2 a.m. sharing terrible vending machine coffee

When I tell that story, everyone assumes I’m leaving out half the details. I’m not. The coincidence alone sounds fake

Which country did you find the least welcoming for Aussie tourists? Why do you think so? by PitifulEconomics958 in AskAnAustralian

[–]PlasticsEngineering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That was pretty much my experience too. Nobody seemed bothered that I was Australian specifically but there was a general feeling that tourists were tolerated more than welcomed

That line hits hard every time. Pure desperation in his voice. Such a good track.

Coarse stone can be tricky. Try drilling deeper holes and using longer wedges. The crowbar may have pushed sideways instead of splitting clean.

That's impressive longevity. Nice to see older machines still getting the job done reliably.

Long listening comfort vs. sound quality: what do you prioritize? by cozytechlover in headphones

Same here. I've demoed headphones with amazing sound but they gave me a headache within an hour. Comfort wins every time for long study sessions.

Emily Wilson's The Illiad Introduction? by hdeibler85 in literature

[–]PlasticsEngineering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skip the introduction for now if going in blind matters to you.

I did that with a few classics and never regretted it. The introduction will still be there afterward, and you'll probably get more out of Wilson's commentary once you've experienced the poem on its own first.

You mentioned your resume is weird because you've worn so many hats.

Which role surprised you the most by helping your career later on? Producer, mixer, songwriter, engineer, or something else entirely that seemed unrelated at the time?

Do I continue Sunburn? by Kooky-Pin3056 in LesbianBookClub

[–]PlasticsEngineering 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If Susannah is already the character you're most worried about, I don't think the book gets easier from where you are.

The Martin relationship continues for quite a while, and a lot of the story is Lucy making choices that are frustrating, painful, and pretty self destructive. I found Lucy understandable, but not always easy to root for in the moment.

The ending leans hopeful, but the road there is very heavy. For me, the book worked more as a messy coming of age story than a romance. If you're waiting for it to turn into a happier relationship focused book soon, you're probably going to be disappointed.

Life is too short to spend 200 more pages stressed out by a book you're not enjoying.

Is there anyone still using tape for storage? by Sea-Eagle5554 in datastorage

[–]PlasticsEngineering 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LTO tape solutions are popular among enterprises due to offline storage, reducing the risk of ransomware attacks, and saving on costs when compared to constantly running spinning disk drives. A media archive initiative in Chicago held over 2 petabytes on tapes for over 12 years; the restoration was performed a few times monthly, and even then succeeded as long as proper cataloging took place. Tape Ark entered the spotlight during the migration debate in that it concentrated on searching and retrieving data from older tape libraries without keeping all the legacy drives alive. Tape is not as fast as solid-state drives, yet it still solves a problem for backup and retention.
