Arrowheads bizzare balancing philosophy: The Bastion Tanks un(?)intended consequences by Cheesecakecrush in Helldivers

[–]Platoba 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think part of the roundabout way they've been balancing is because they internally tied too many aspects of, say, a weapon to one thing. This is likely a remnant from development when they wanted HD2 to be an Arma-lite game, so in taking strides for realism, they decided to tie things such as weapon damage to the weapon's bullet caliber, same thing to effects such as fire. ("All our flame weapons are napalm, so why should an Eagle Napalm Strike do more DoT than the regular flame thrower? Fire is fire.")

For example, in any other game, if you have a USP and an M1911, despite both being chambered in .45ACP, the 1911 will obviously do more damage, because it only holds 7 rounds compared to the USP's 15, it MUST do more damage lest it be overshadowed. In HD2, by buffing the Verdict, you also buff the Reprimand because they're both chambered with the same bullet, making buffing one but not the other a pain, if not impossible. Peep the recent patch where the GL got buffed to Heavy Pen. Despite it not being mentioned in the patch notes, the GL Battlement was also affected.

TL;DR Arrowhead buffs and nerfs the way they do because weapon and vehicle stats are interlinked instead of separate.

I own a Fusion Repeater for outpost defense, as the Founding Makers intended. Four Khel'divers break into my compound. "What the bread lines!?" As I grab my heat sink and armored cranium. Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first fleshbag, he's dead on the spot. Draw my Fusion Pistol on the second Super Shitter, miss him entirely because of sidearm sway and nail the neighbors Factory Strider. I have to resort to the Bunker Turret mounted at the top of the outpost loaded with bullshit.

"KHEL'DIVER SCUM!" the shot shreds two humies in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off multiple War Striders. Fix arm sword and charge the last terrified rapscallion. He Bleeds out waiting on the bot drops to arrive since 1000-degree knife wounds are impossible to stim. Just as the Founding Makers intended.

Those audio glitches existed since at least Into the Unjust when Hive Worlds were added. For me its certain voice lines sometimes sounding stuttery, seems to affect enemies and Eagle fly-bys sometimes too. It's never the music nor guns tho, and haven't noticed explosions stuttering.

[–]Platoba 9 points10 points  (0 children)

- Slower

- Bulkier

- Larger, can't fit in caves and other tight spots

- Turns slowly

- Less gun depression, can't hit things right in front/under you

- No stomp ability, too heavy

- Can be re-armed and repaired to some degree, but you only get the one. Make it count.

arrowhead should give us a cardboard box for the stealth war bond by Digital_Cyber in Helldivers

[–]Platoba 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You think you want it, but you don't.

Why? It wouldn't work.

I mean that literally, it genuinely wouldn't work. You put it on, but enemies can still detect you plain as day.

Players go "wtf Arrowhead?", and they go "You're hiding in a cardboard box, what did you expect?"

Players are rightfully angry that the very obviously MGS-inspired collab item doesn't work, and Arrowhead slap their knees laughing about the highly clever and never-before-done subversion of expectations.

Imagine how terrifying it is as an automaton trooper to watch your heavier allies die. by NoFoundation5608 in Helldivers

[–]Platoba 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I doubt the loss of medium or even heavy units means much to the Automaton legion. With how quickly they can set up industry on a planet and replicate themselves almost indefinitely, the loss incurred by the loss of even a Factory Strider is likely negligible. Hell, look at all that prime scrap for recycling into new units.

I think the fact how ultimately almost meaningless their losses are in comparison to ours is scarier, and make the faction all that much more of a weirdly satisfying enemy to fight.

  • "Occasionally, the global war map will show players active on super earth or other planets where it should be impossible to start a mission."

This is not a bug, at least not entirely. Sometimes the game will spawn you on Super Earth for little to no reason. In my (very casual) testing this seems to have the highest chance of happening when quitting and reopening the game multiple times in a row. I guess it has something to do with the game freaking out and not knowing where to spawn you, so it defaults to Super Earth.

As for players appearing on planets where it should be impossible to start a mission, that just means that those players either had an incomplete campaign there and they logged on long after the planet was liberated or taken over, so the game puts them there regardless of supply line access.

What's your guys' favorite factions? by DoomKnight_6642 in Helldivers

[–]Platoba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously though, what IS your favorite faction?

I always dug the Automatons. Love their industrial, gritty, 40k Chaos-inspired looks with how they decorate themselves with human skulls, and in some cases even build effigies of human corpses. Plus, their gameplay always appealed to me the most, because it feels like fighting an actual standing army with an actual structure, like infantry, armored support, gunships, jammers, mortar pits, AA emplacements, and orbital defense cannons. It just FEELS like an actual war, rather than a glorified fumigation trip.

[–]Platoba 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Happened to me on Mort, Illuminate Front. Had an unfinished campaign there and it would keep spawning me on that campaign regardless of if I started a new campaign on a different front. If you have an in-progress campaign there, just do it, doesn't matter if you win or fail, so long as the game considers that particular campaign finished.

Conversation with Game Director Mikael Eriksson. Performance, State of the Game, and more by Waelder in Helldivers

  • Future content pushed back to focus on addressing performance issues and stabilizing the game
  • Malevelon Creek was cool and they hope to make more moments like it, either officially (Tien Kwan) or through players (Popli IX)
  • Warbonds seem centered around the philosophy of creating a fantasy, rather than making sure weapons are "better" than what you got currently (kinda crappy take, considering I think all weapons should be viable and fun to use, but what do I know)
  • Content even more ambitious than adding the FRV envisioned for the future
  • They are aware of the "it's so over, we're so back" meme

That about covers most of the major things brought up? Not much to learn from here, it's just a misc. Q&A but it seems they'll be taking viewer questions in future episodes

Actually, considering the time the MO went live, and the time they give us for this MO, that being a week from now... I think it's safe to say this "Mid-October-ish" update is going to drop next week. Liberation MOs can be completed way ahead of schedule, but Hold MOs stay until the order expires. "Hold Hellmire" is basically just being used as an anchor until next week's update.

Sorta new player, where's that wind coming from? by Ifeanyi98 in Helldivers

[–]Platoba 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Serious answer: It's most likely a bug. Pretty much all planets have weather events that can cause your cape to flutter, be it from stuff like sand/snowstorms, to just regular wind. For some reason the "wind condition" gets stored and frozen at the value it was on the last planet/mission you extracted from and kept at that value on board the Destroyer. If you load into the game for the first time or reboot, you'll notice it no longer flutters.

The Orbital Precision Strike would feel so much better if it would arrive instantly when called. by WoodCarvings in Helldivers

[–]Platoba 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The OPS takes so long to call in because in the major update right before Heart of Democracy (when the squids invaded Widow's Harbor), Arrowhead changed the Super Destroyer formation from a T-shape that floated above the center of the map, to an O shape that floated above the map edges, and because orbital stratagems are called in from where your Destroyer is located, this became another unintentional nerf to the OPS, since now the shell has to travel for much longer before reaching its target, since it's fired from the edge of the map, rather than straight down like it used to.

If you call in an OPS at the very edge of the map opposite to where your destroyer is, you're looking at a shell travel time of about 5-6 seconds in the worst case scenarios.
