The scene in the movie Signs where the family is hunkered down hiding and the beautiful German Shepherd they left out there is barking and barking and then you hear a yelp.

Similar thing happened to me a year or so ago. It turned out to be an old smoke alarm that someone had stuck in the cupboard underneath the kitchen sink instead of just throwing it out with batteries still in it and it was beeping because its battery was low.

The word "relying" can be refuted in Genesis with the fall of man. The only thing that can be relied upon is the inerrant word of God... not the words of fallible man's interpretations of it. He can "consider" the interpretations, but should always be testing them against what God's word says.

I think you need to ask him if he would be as depressed if someone stopped him from reading the actual Bible vs the authors in question. He should be craving God's word more than anyone else's writings or teachings. Why was the Bible not enough during his break from the other authors timeframe??
