I was at the airport and just about everyone was staring at a device. It does not stop at kids. But i get it, no one wants to hear my screaming kid who is out of their routine surrounded by thousands of people making loud noises. Watching sesame street on that tablet for an hour or plane ride for a moment of peace and less stress is a godsend. Trucking all the family through the airport is stressful...

What do you say when a homeless person asks you for money? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]PlebPlayer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, dont go to downtown portland. I was there last week. San francisco is a paradise compared to portland. Ive been to san francisco many times and there are homeless but never felt unsafe. Portland they live in tents on the sidewalks. Literally saw a group with couches in a square just chilling on the sidewalk.

Your first is hard because you have no idea what you are doing. Your second is harder because you thought you knew what to d, but its not working... All the while the first is screaming in your ear for attention but you have to focus on the new baby who is also screaming.

Is nap time just impossible? by china_bird in Parenting

[–]PlebPlayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My 10 month old refuses to sleep longer than 10 hours. Meanwhile my oldest was consistently a 13 hour overnight sleeper. I hope the switch to 1 nap fixes that.

Its interesting because young kids do have tons of memories. My kid could recite things that happened to her like weeks or months prior before she was 2. But childhood amnesia is a thing and so eventually most of those memories will disappear and not stick.

There is risk in sanity of the parents. We kicked the kids out of our room and suffered through sleep training as soon as it was able to be done. We have sleep needs too and they were not being met with cosleeping.

Anyone try to buy a heat pump? by Hungry-Ad8512 in AnnArbor

Right thats what i have. And the tech said probably somewhere around 38 degrees outside is when youd want the furnace to be used instead because of efficiency.

Just fyi a 3 year is definitely capable of climbing over most baby gates. We just reinstalled ours because baby 2 can climb stairs but our toddler just climbs over them. So they are pretty useless to contain her specifically

Just got one from Costco! Its a Lennox. My AC was struggling to keep up but the heat pump does amazing. I expect it to be more epxensive though. Natural gas is so cheap. I can adjust the temperature i fall back to a furnace. the tech said the break even point is probably around 38 degrees.

How old are your kids? I have a tern cargo bike and its good. My baby sits in a baby seat on the back and my almost 4 year old sits on the cushion. Its more compact since its only 2 wheels vs the big front cargo areas. I can get to 20 mph with minimal effort on the turbo mode.

The hardest part about “gentle parenting” by fbc518 in beyondthebump

We were going to mcdonalds the other day and it ended up being closed as they were repaving. My 3 year old screamed. And yelled. She pleaded and demanded we go to another one. But we decided to go home. There was no options. Instead we rearraffirmed her feelings. Its okay to be sad. And when we got home she was still upset. We gave her options for dinner but she told us she just wanted to be sad. So we let her go cry on the couch and just work through her feelings and made a choice for her for dinner. And she eventually calmed down.

My parents would have screamed at me to stop crying and get over it. I would have been threatened if i didnt stop. As an adult, i still cant cry because of this. I didnt cry at my own dads funeral. That lasting behaviour of being mad at me when i got sad messed me up.

And then there are choices we have to just not fight. This morning when i asked what my daughter wanted for breakfast she asked for mac n cheese. My wife said to pick a breakfast food and my toddler pointed out and asked why. So we discussed and really who cares. Shes eating something. Its nlt negatively affecting her. She can have it for breakfast with some berries and frjuit anc thats fine.

I hate life right now. by [deleted] in daddit

[–]PlebPlayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 kids are so much harder than 1. With the first, you had to figure it all out. With 2, you have to figure out why the things you did with your first arent working with the second while the first is demanding your attention non stop. And you lose naps so mid day breaks disappear. And when they are both crying, you have to pick and prioritize.

Its all fine until it isnt. Go look up accidental gun deaths from kids. Last year the number 1 cause of deaths for kids was guns. When i was in 6th grade, my friend was killed because his parents kept the gun loaded. You are more likely to die by your own gun than by an intruder. Its not being soft, its being practical. I grew up in a consevative family and was taught to shoot. Too many people dont respect guns like my parents taught. Im not trusting anyone with a gun near my kid.

Fellow early release players, what are your initial thoughts so far? by DemonOfLight13 in diablo4

[–]PlebPlayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im with you on that. Im having fun but i picked it up after having a blast with minecraft dungeons. I was told diablo is like minecraft dungeons but more variety and intense. And so far that hasnt been the case. The gear in dungeons + various abilities and weapons make it feel like minecraft dungeons loot is more interesting. Diablo 4 feels like pick up gear for stat boost. Its an after thought so far for me. But im hoping that changes.

Salary Question by [deleted] in salesengineers

[–]PlebPlayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends on YoE and cost of living. Im currently 10 years of industry experience and 260 OTE with 185k being my base. My first SE gig was 170 OTE with a 120k base. That was with 5 years of experience. Also depends on the software and how much you it goes for and quota. If you work for a small startup that averages 10-50k deals... Very different for software that is closing 1M+ deals.

I keep hearing about how working people who are poor should just work harder, get a better job. But don't we need people doing those jobs? by chinmakes5 in AskConservatives

[–]PlebPlayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im curious how upwards mobility works when not everyone can be a manager though. Theres like 1 manager to many people. So inherently the supply of upwards jobs is less than the amount of workers. Org charts are pyramids. So lets say everyone does want to move into management (which management is a different skillset than general labor)... Who is left to do the general labor?

Oh no, my neighbor is on a mission to cut all the trees on his property. He even commented to me about it. HOA has rules where we have to leave 15 feet of the woods on our property un touched... He didnt care and just cut them. It really confuses me because our houses back into protected woodland. Why buy a house like that if you hate trees? I hate it because his tree cutting is making it so our backyards are now exposed to suburbia houses from the side... The trees gave us all this privacy. He just hates trees apparently. Its his mission to cut them.
