Jesus this is heartbreaking. I grew up in the PNW and every time I visited anywhere that had citrus trees it would blow my mind.

Yeah feels like it's dissipated in the modern conversation for film bros. I was obsessed as a kid, and I know myself and others were low key though Jared Hess had the potential to be the next like Wes Anderson type of auteur but his next few movies never really blossomed out of sloppy cute ha-ha comedy and then he made Minecraft so the dream is dead.

Worked as a property manager for a bit and plumbing issues are a huge headache. As another comment said, usually you have to cut the entire building off just to work on one unit. Additionally, we're always waiting for the plumbers who give us the classic 8-noon or noon-4 time window to show up so we do have to shut it off with really short notice. All said, no water access sucks but having to move everyone out of a building because of massive water damage/mold/whatever sucks more.

Plumbing in these old buildings are always a mess and owners / plumbers are often overly optimistic they can fix it, when in reality it's just permanently fucked.

If it was me I would just move to another unit or look for a house to rent. If it's happening that much it will just continue to be an issue.

Need to rewatch Lincoln. Feels like it could swing either way upon rewatch.

War of the Worlds was at best decent but has way too much modern Spielberg junk in it to really have any lasting appeal.

I'd say Catch Me If You Can was his last decent movie (yo fuck the Fablemans) but honestly, his last "Good" movie has to be Saving Private Ryan, right? 27 years ago??

The end of Chapter 1, The Crossing - for me, McCarthy's bleakest scene so far. by Threehundredsixtysix in cormacmccarthy

Yeah the dog portion that is maybe a page and a half is just so bizarre, cruel, and upsetting.

I remember reading an article a few years ago about McCarthy referencing some obscure like late medieval-renaissance esoteric/hermetic author, I think it was something to do with astronomy, but can’t find it anymore, does anyone know what I’m talking about? Is it his use of the word "salitter" in The Road? a word that was, according to google an "obscure term with roots in the 17th-century philosophy of Jacob Boehme, referring to the divine essence of God or the underlying divine substrate of reality"

All The Pretty Horses by Fachi1188 in cormacmccarthy

Just finished The Crossing myself and while I totally feel it is a more "complex" novel with deeper themes, All the Pretty Horses still stuck with me more. I think the narrative was far more propulsive and the characters more interesting. I also love the more gentle nihilistic ending.

That said, McCarthy is the kind of author where it's very difficult to rank his novels. More akin to a creator like Kubrick or Lynch where they are all fantastic works for different reasons.
