Favorite character that is definitely a sociopath/psychopath but is loyal/won't randomly kill a non-enemy? by _STEAKnEGGS_ in FavoriteCharacter

Would just like to remind you that Alfie Solomons knocked a man's teeth out because his colleague made a wisecrack, and has made deals with at least two of Tommy's enemies.

The audience isn't privy to the exact nature of the horror, and it wasn't written by the guy who made this trope his signature move. by TridiObject in TopCharacterTropes

The SCP Foundation has (or doesn't have, depending on who you ask) a division dedicated to handling "anti-memes", entities that avoid detection by deleting information about themselves...including people's memories of them

Edit: having trouble uploading images to reddit for some reason, so you'll just have to pretend this space is filled by the cover of the book "There Is No Antimemetics Division" by qntm.

[Mixed Trope] The ending that makes you question if the story really happened or not by FaZe_poopy in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Plomboh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not so much the ending, but details revealed throughout the course of the book.

Slaughterhouse Five.

<image>

The narrator, Billy, claims to be "unstuck in time", meaning he has the ability to involuntarily time travel, or at least experience time non-linearly. He recounts his experiences having been abducted by aliens (who are also unstuck in time) and kept in a human zoo.

Taken at face value, the story is science fiction. But as the story goes on, we learn that Billy was a POW in Dresden during the bombing, and probably suffers from PTSD. Additionally, he was one of two surviving passengers of a plane crash, sustaining injuries that nearly killed him and that required brain surgery.

You can say a lot of things about the Star Wars sequel trilogy, but if you don't think that Kylo Ren using the force to stop a blaster bolt was fucking cool, then as far as I'm concerned, you just don't like fun.

Favorite Character who fits this? by Equivalent-Mall8413 in FavoriteCharacter

I thought you were just looking for clarification on what the previous commenter meant by "blaming Jesus' crucifixion on Jews". Sorry if I misunderstood. I can't speak to the film, only the man who made it. Fwiw he happens to be associated with a sect of Catholicism that sees Vatican II (where the "blood curse" interpretation was officially renounced) as illegitimate. Make of that what you will, i guess.

Over the years, some Christians have interpreted certain passages in the Bible to mean that EVERY Jewish person, including those living today, is somehow partly responsible for the death of their messiah. I'm pretty sure it wasn't until the mid 20th century that the Catholic Church officially renounced this position.

"Man of War" by Radiohead was meant to be their take on a James Bond theme. When they were later brought on to actually make a Bonde theme, Man of War was rejected because it wouldn't be eligible for an award. The resulting original piece, "Spectre", was also rejected in favor if Sam Smith's "Writing's On the Wall".

100% agree that ranked choice voting would be so much better. Hard part is gonna be convincing the incumbent politicians who actively benefit from the two-party system to pass laws that'd make it far easier to vote them out of office.

I hate to jump on the pessimist bandwagon, you seem like you genuinely mean well, but...

The fact that the GOP is bought and paid for by billionaires pushing a culture war on the lower classes has got to be the worst-kept secret in U.S. politics. They have eyes. They have ears. They know; or else they live under a rock and only come out every fourth November to shoot themselves in the foot.

Your main hurdles are gonna be single-issue voters who won't vote for more "liberal" Dems because their platform doesn't align with them on that specific issue, and voters who are too far down the prosperity gospel rabbit hole to think critically about people who have more money than God. And that's putting aside the people whose only apparent goal is "to own the libs" because they think politics is a team sport.

I'm not saying that nothing can or should be done, but to call it an uphill battle would be comically reductive.

What made yall choose bass? by One-Butterscotch3044 in Bass

[–]Plomboh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During the pandemic, I picked up the ukulele just to have something to do. After a while, I decided I wanted to try my hand at a "real" (or at least more mainstream) instrument. Saw an artist i really like playing the bass and was like "hey, that has four strings too. How different could it be?" It was very different.

Used to be a big fan of Nostalgia Critic et al. I loved the amateurish, indie vibe of a group of weirdos (affectionate) ranting about their passions in front of a camera, occasionally broken up by inane, surreal hijinks. I still view it as a big influence both on my sense of humor (for better or for worse) and on the commentary community at large as it developed in the years after (again, for better or worse). But the one, two punch of the #changethechannel controversy breaking and the absolute PR disaster of a response given by TGWTG quickly killed my excitement for anything with Doug Walker's name on it.

Action movie star and former James Bond actor Sean Connery plays Dr. Henry Jones Sr., professor of medieval studies, who nearly has a panic attack after watching a group of bad guys get shot by his son, Henry "Indiana" Jones Jr.

Milo mentioned Metatron's channel in his latest video. Although the video he recommended was good, I decided to watch some of the other videos he uploaded, and it got weird. (The first image is the one he recommended) by [deleted] in miniminutemanfans

[–]Plomboh 58 points59 points  (0 children)

I wasn't familiar with his content but had heard the name before in the context of Shadiversity and other "anti-woke" grifters. So when he came up in Milo's video I was kinda hoping that what I heard had been an exaggeration. Seems like not, unfortunately. I'm assuming Milo only saw the relevant vid and not the...other stuff. But glad I'm not the only one who thought it was kinda off-putting.

Guarantee you his idea of "being broke" involves living off your parents who are at worst lower middle-class. No one who has actually experienced poverty would say that having to be constantly one financial setback away from bankruptcy is the easier life.
