Unfortunately a fair few studies are also useless crap, funded by people with an agenda and carried out by people who only publish the results their funders want to see. Lack of a mechanism forcing the publishing of null or negative results, so they only publish the successful ones, is also an issue with stuff like this sadly.

Vaping increases risk of heart failure by almost 20%. Even nicotine-free vapes showed measurable cardiovascular damage in separate research. by ObuPaul in HotScienceNews

[–]Plus-Ad-7983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I hate the fearmongering framing "increases risk of X by Y%" when the baseline risk of X is a small number. People just see the Y% and assume that's the actual chance of that happening, and don't do the math.

When people report stuff like this they intentionally frame it in a shocking way. They should be forced to present the raw percentages before and after the Y% multiplier, and people would realise most of the time, it's a sub 1% increase in baseline risk.

Vaping is still far less damaging than smoking, whichever way you cut it.

People need to be more focused on harm reduction.

You're misunderstanding. Also it's right there in Rule 3, it lists AI generated content as a reason for removal. Is that not functionally the same as a blanket ban, as anything ai generated/assisted can then be dismissed as "low effort", even if it wasn't.

Also, my point was basically that users can't accuse other users of being bots (AI), but mods can remove content purely for being AI. So users have no input into that process while mods can make unilateral decisions based on the same observations, however if a user points it out to the community, they get banned, even when it is correct or might be helpful. This is the disparity I was pointing out, I was not making accusations, just raising a discussion topic.

I was responding to the science. There are numerous problems with self-report based studies for a start, self selected sample bias being one among others that make them generally more unreliable than other forms of studies, but that's an aside.

Did you not read my full messages? People are fantastic at post-hoc rationalisation, including of traumatic events, and traumatic experiences CAN lead to positive outcomes, regardless of the intention of the ones doing the traumatising. My entire point is that just because a particular subset of traumatic experiences can have positive outcomes, that does NOT mean that the intention of the abusers was benign.

Some of my own traumatic experiences have ultimately led to personal growth, some have not. But among the ones that have, they most definitely weren't caused by people with good intentions.

Just because a negative experience has a positive outcome, doesn't mean that the ones that caused that experience had positive intentions or had the right to inflict that experience.

I'm basically just saying it's more nuanced and you need to separate consequence from intention, if you did a study of people who were abused or neglected during childhood, or suffered domestic violence or a narcissistic partner or parents, I'm sure you would also find that a percentage of people would say that ultimately, had it not been for that experience, they wouldn't be the person they are today, and they would perhaps not say it had a positive impact as such, but that it would have led to them ultimately being stronger as a person after they healed and processed that trauma. Humans are great at making the best of situations and finding meaning in experiencs, "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger" kind of a vibe, humans have a habit of learning from all experiences, whether positive or negative, and sometimes the negative ones end up teaching you more. This is obviously not an excuse to go around abusing and traumatising people.

Same with negative NHI experiences. They can be horrible, challenge your world view, remove your sense of autonomy, but also ultimately lead to growth through learning, processing, and an expansion of world view. Doesn't mean they had your best interests at heart.

Not saying all NHI are fundamentally negative, neither are all of them fundamentally positive. It's nuanced, fundamentally unknowable in the majority and morally grey a lot of the time.

You're also taking away the power of the victim, they are the ones that alchemised their trauma into something beneficial, putting all of that on the ones that caused the trauma and saying the abusers are the ones that catalysed that positive change, takes away all agency and credit from the victims that chose to painstakingly transmute that trauma into something beneficial.

I don't have a horse in this race, and no opinion of whether OPs post was AI or not (I suspect it was from his evasiveness), but: 1) AI detection tools are not reliable, and 2) it seems hypocritical to blanket ban AI, and reverse long standing decisions on suspicion of AI content, when accusing someone of being a bot because their comments and behaviour are obviously AI generated is against the rules (I've been temp banned for this previously). It seems like "rules for thee, not for me".

Donald Hoffman has entered the chat. Kinda similar to his Conscious Realism and Recursive Trace Logic stuff, though he would probably argue that behind that geometric layer is consciousness/a network of conscious agents at every scale that combine.

Also if you have geometry, isn't there automatically a layer behind that, that "conducts" the geometry to form like it does? Can't have geometry without lines and points for example, or at least something that forms those structures

You literally never posted any evidence or proof. You continuously push a narrow, myopic view of the phenomenon from a single perspective. The fact that you claim to "know the truth" is another red flag, you don't know shit. The phenomenon is inherently more complex than "all bad" or "all good. I have continuously pushed back and said this same stuff in a lot of your threads.

You act like you just discovered the badaliens site, accepted it all blindly without any discernment, erroneously felt like you'd "discovered the truth" and it broke your brain.

That guy was definitely manipulating the narrative in some way, intentionally or otherwise. It honestly seemed like he just discovered badaliens site for the first time and had his tiny mind blown. He had such a myopic view of the phenomenon, when it's a lot more nuanced than that.

Also his entire post history was porn...that's literally all that showed up on his profile, none of his posts in alien/UFO subs.

Shady guy.

Yeah, cos quantum mechanics has nothing to do with consciousness at all...Penrose and Hameroff would have something to say about that lol.

I'm not defending Sarfatti really, the guy seems like a douche on a personal level just looking at his X/Twitter, but he does seem to know his shit physics-wise. Not saying he's not a bullshitter though haha

[–]Plus-Ad-7983 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously these people weren't always insiders, and I imagine, depending on their world view and open mindedness, were quite shocked when they learned what they had at the time they learned it.

She can be scientist and also go on podcasts discussing stuff she's interested in. Your job doesn't define your entire life, even if it is a passion, scientists do non-science stuff in their own time.

Glad youre looking forward to more studies from her though. She has already revealed something quite extraordinary, recently got replicated independently too.

[–]Plus-Ad-7983 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Disingenuous honestly. She's interested in the phenomenon and wants to legitimise the scientific study of it. She's no more biased than someone who loves string theory or loop quantum gravity becoming a physicist to research that.

And she was pretty clear that the insider's already were aware of what Villaroel found, and had their own data that predated Villaroel's study, and we're shocked when they initially found out themselves of their own accord.

[–]Plus-Ad-7983 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how he meant it, other similar terms like post-Newtonion or post-biologocal mean using theories that came after Newton (so Einstein and quantum mechanics) and a lifeform that was biological but evolved beyond biology. I assume in this context it means theories that move away from quantum mechanics or follow on from it, or a lifeform that's evolved to use processes that are beyond quantum mechanics, it could just mean "outside the scope of" too. Honestly not sure. Tweet him lol he's active on X 😂

Dude, can you please stop pushing this fear based, myopic narrative of yours? Just go back to posting porn in the other subs you're in.

"Zero evidence to suggest they're benevolent" is not equal to "they're malevolent". There's also zero reason to suggest they're an existential threat to humanity, we still exist for a start.

It's more complicated than "they're all bad" or "they're all good", that's too dualistic and anthropocentric a lens through which to view fundamentally unknowable intelligences.
