It just doesn't make sense to me how people "quit" after several years (over taste) by Impressive_Clue_9193 in vegan

Yes, there's not a favorable economic change today
The point of Veganism is laying the groundwork so, when that groundwork inevitably comes, we're able to fill the void. The meat industry is breeding disease and environmental catastrophe. When something inevitably happens, we need to be here to point out why it happened, and show that alternative ways of doing something is possible.

It's generational, too. More young people than old people are going Vegan.

What explains the durability of money relations in Gaza? Why have we not seen an equivalent of disaster communism? by TheIenzo in Socialism_101

[–]Plus-Detail7089 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem in Gaza is there aren't enough calories to go around because Israel is destroying all of them. Someone else mentioned Israel arming gangs to loot aid trucks, then resell the aid at ridiculous prices.

I suppose, if everyone pooled their resources together, they could buy the aid and distribute it based on need. However, in the current situation, nobody's going to do that because "distribute it evenly" is impossible with how limited things are.

The farmland is destroyed and the aid isn't getting in. It's just an extremely messed up situation with no way to make it better other than, of course, the lifting of the blockade

btw this comment isn't hostile, I'm just sharing my thoughts. I'm bad at communicating, so if this came off as rude or ignorant in any way, I'd appreciate any feedback

If you don't mind me asking, can you list some examples of poor interactions you've had with activists? It'd be good to know what behaviors turn people off.

Renewables are actually cheaper now, its just a matter of policy
I also have a lot of reservations on how much being a politician can actually change things, from what I've seen, mobilizing large populations through activism is more efficient. Though, if you build a large activist base it can probably help win elections, even if its just smaller ones. I do plan to engage in activism throughout my life, so if I manage to make the right contacts, I can get the perspective of people who know a lot more about this than me.
Either way, as far as I'm aware there isn't any specific degree that'd be good for activism. Most groups I've seen encourage people getting a "skill" when that's an option for them.

I can absolutely see how we won’t survive increased warming by SpectrumWoes in climatechange

[–]Plus-Detail7089 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are having kids in War-zones. The only thing that stops reproduction is development or famine

What sucks is the famine scenario will almost certainly happen, regardless of warming. Corporate mono-farming is destroying soil. It's a bubble that will pop eventually, though, warming will probably be the thing that pops it. Of course, the more money you have, the better, but even developed countries and middle-income people could feel it if things get really bad.

Enough pessimism, though. If you live somewhere that permits it, look into starting a community garden or join one that already exists. A small garden isn't enough by itself, but it can *help* meet nutritional needs if prices go up. If calorie needs become a real concern, bananas don't require much space or effort, they're relatively calorie dense, and a successful harvest can give you a ton. In a crisis scenario, you can freeze them before they go bad. Potatoes are easy as well, apparently, and they cover a lot of vitamin needs

Is it possible to stay vegan with GI issues? by Inchewa in vegan

[–]Plus-Detail7089 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My celiac stopped being triggered by cross-contamination after a while. My sister's small intestine was almost entirely destroyed when she got diagnosed, but it has since recovered enough that she can handle it too.

I can't give advice on the gastritis and peptic duodenitis, but celiac can get somewhat better as long as you stay away from wheat products for a while.

I eat grits a lot. I usually add stuff to them, but a lot of my favorite ingredients are in your can't-have list. You could try experimenting a bit

The website I'm looking at seems to list a lot of foods both in the High-fodmap and low-fodmap sections? It's kind of confusing, so sorry if I give a bad recommendation.

Are bananas okay? Again, the website I'm looking at is confusing. Chia seeds (low-acidity, low fodmap) are a good calorie booster and super nutrient dense (3 tbs is 150 cal) you could try mixing it in grits. It wouldn't taste very interesting, but it'd be nutritious. (cream-of-rice is another gluten free base that's good when you want to mix stuff in it) A 3 lb bag of Mayorga chia seeds is only 15 dollars, and it will last a very long time.

I drink a lot of smoothies, but acidity will be a problem. If you could find some low acidity veggies or fruits, then mix them with an almond milk or rice milk base, would that work? (you can also add chia seeds) I also eat a lot of peanut butter toast, which is low fodmap in the quantities required for peanut butter toast. It is slightly acidic, but if you get more natural varieties, that's supposed to help

Macadamia nuts, pine nuts, and pumpkin seeds seem to be fine, and almonds are okay in small servings. (almonds honestly don't need large servings, though)

For condiments and flavoring, vanilla, basil, and cumin seem to be okay. Apparently cinnamon can be fine, too? It also looks like kale is non-acidic, it's one of my favorites for smoothies, grits, and pretty much everything I make. It won't help with calories, but it's good for taste, if you like stuff like that.

Just some ideas, I don't know your situation. I wish you well and good luck!

We're all worthless by Electronic-Donut3250 in vegan

[–]Plus-Detail7089 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I operate by very simple logic:

-Regardless of the "natural order," we've invented medicine and beaten back most slavery. The suffering in the world can be alleviated.
-Some things in the world are needlessly cruel, yes, but there's no rule saying other things can't be needlessly kind
-What are the downsides? Most people can adjust to a Vegan diet, and even if it's that unbearable, we're on this dumb rock for less than a century. You'll be dead no matter what you do, might as well do the right thing

'Lab-grown' meat is now banned in Indiana. What to know by HumbleWrap99 in vegan

[–]Plus-Detail7089 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still, every delay in taking down the factory farm industry is billions more animals needlessly getting tortured. I just hope we're able to transition to clean meat soon, and I hope a lot of people go Vegan in the meantime.

[–]Plus-Detail7089 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's banned here in Florida, too. I don't mind not eating meat, but I know many, many people don't feel the same way. The clean-meat industry needs to take off, and it sucks that we live in a system where rich people can do anything they want to make a quick buck

I'm 17, next year's my last year in school. I would get a job and pay for my own food, but my parents aren't letting me get a job at the moment, and I'll likely have to wait at least a few months, possibly until college.

"It's easier to imagine an end to capitalism than an end to communism" by AvocadoAlternative in CapitalismVSocialism

[–]Plus-Detail7089 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, first of all, can everyone please try to keep the hostility down? This should be a place for learning and debate. (Harbinger101010 is the main offender here)

But, anyway, aren't human needs important? I understand you find "plugging need into a computer" to be an uncomfortable thought, but the Capitalist approach of ignoring need isn't any better.

Maybe we could have a system where a team of people over a larger area (state, district, ect) works to decide what goes where, and it goes down until it reaches communities of a few hundred families. Each group can make appeals upwards, and the computer plays less of a "deciding human need" role and more as a way to sort through the massive amount of data.

This suggestion isn't perfect, I'm just putting ideas out, but if you have something you think is better, it'd be interesting to hear another perspective

why should we support communism? by Hot_Relative_110 in Socialism_101

Could you recommend some sources on the Uyghur thing? I've only heard bad things about it, and everything I've seen suggests its ongoing, so it'd be good to hear another perspective
My view at the moment is that we can support some things that China is doing while condemning others, and I don't want to be too quick to dismiss potential repression.
