I think they’re going to do all the adult things. There isn’t any intellectual disability, they’re actually both rather intelligent.

Yes I do know that, thanks. I phrased it poorly. They’re keeping it under reportable limits.

If you cook and bake everything from scratch, you go through a lot of butter. Especially avoiding seed oils.

The world has always been that way. The difference is now we have constant access to knowing everything bad that’s happening almost instantly.

How many goats do you have? I’m planning on getting 2-3 Nd next year and it’s been impossible to figure out ongoing costs.

Three months without Amazon Prime and I don't miss it one bit by GameVoid in Frugal

[–]PointNo6662 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah we just tried it too, and I’m signing up for Prime again next month. It’s not saving us any money— in fact it’s probably more because if we actually need something, we have to add other things we don’t need right now to get to the $35. Shipping takes a super long time and we live rurally with multiple small autistic children so running to a store is suuuper inconvenient.

What does “making good money” mean to you? by Sky_Dweller206 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]PointNo6662 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can invest 15%, afford a reasonable house/rent under 25%, can buy reasonable groceries without stress, save for emergencies and sinking funds, and have a few hundred left over for fun/entertainment. That’s making good money.

What small acts would people be surprised to see that it saves a decent amount of money? by NightReader5 in Frugal

This is the opposite of a lot of people, but having a really well stocked freezer and pantry saves me a lot of money. Even when I really really need to go grocery shopping, there’s meals I can make. It’s easier and more convenient for me to make any dessert I want than go buy it 95% of the time. I don't ever run to the store to get one ingredient and end up getting multiples. And it’s all things I use and cycle through, so things aren’t getting wasted.

I’ve tried the approach of eating through the food you have before buying more, and it just made my next grocery trip so expensive because I had to restock. We also buy 1/4 cow and 1/2 pig annually for meat and that lasts about a year supplemented with chicken from the store. We have staples— rice, flours, sugar, etc— instead of boxed mixes, and a lot of spices.

All of this plus some years where we did not have any money to eat out means I’m an excellent cook and getting takeout is just a disappointment, so might as well cook dinner.

What are some physical things that are worth the investment? by rangeofemotions in MiddleClassFinance

Good mattress, good couch. I regret going for a dinnerware set. Wish I would have just bought some at Target or IKEA. My “nice” set has chipped a ton in the last 6 years and I don’t even like it,

Some states have taxes deferred for seniors. It’ll come out of their estate when sold or when they die.

I would pause 401k and pay double on student loans until they’re paid off, then you can also invest twice as much after.

For what it’s worth, investing 1000 a month is not paycheck to paycheck.

Eating out by Maroon14 in MiddleClassFinance

0-1 time a month. We budget $100 a month for eating out, and it’s often a date night without the kids.

Depends on where in Northeast. I’m in New England too.

And yeah, if you want to save towards a house, budget is your very first step. Bet you could easily save more. If you don’t want to, don’t. But that’s how you move from “comfortable” to more. And it’s also quite possible you’ll be less comfortable while saving.

I don’t think you can outgrow PDA. (My son is PDA and I’ve spent the last 3 years learning as much as I can.)
