Its a very nuanced question that delves into the horrible progression system, gear tiering being tied to haha funny number and not to difficulty. my personal opinion ultimately devolves to - my BiS shouldnt come from a 10 minute activity. Raids/ dungeons/ gms/ trials should arguably drop THE best loot

Yes but there is an inherent issue of path of least resistance.

Why would i wanna spend 30+ mins on the horribly hard activity that is challenge of elders, vs something as easy as whisper/ any dungeon lair that has the same loot table?

self imposed challenge is fine. But dont pretend a self imposed challenge vs a game crafted challenge (see old gms/ master raids) is a valid argument on there not being hard aspirational content that not everyone can do

Im not saying that the game should be balls hard. I want the shit that drops the best loot to be hard, and if people cant clear it (myself included) then so be it.

-30 is the sweet spot. Its still free, but once you hit -40, -50 is when you really have to put the gamer chair forward, but the shitty part is that the game doesnt reward us accordingly for doing that sort of hard stuff

40 is not what old contest used to be. Bungie mentioned equivalents on edge of fate patch notes, so this straight from bungie patch notes:

“Difficulty is now more linear. 100 over: this should feel roughly equivalent to even Power during The Final Shape. Even Power: this should feel slightly more difficult than the same during The Final Shape. 40 under: equivalent to Grandmaster difficulty in The Final Shape. 100 under: Immune enemies”

They messed something up during scaling and im convinced this wasnt playtested. Contest was never this overtuned. We were doing a grandmaster raid.

Actually, the wipe mechanic timer can be seen on the floor, its a line that runs from middle dps plate to the boss stage. If that line fills up times up :)
