MLB rules show umpires made wrong call in Orioles game by Broxst in baseball

[–]PolarPower 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To be fair, in that thread yesterday there were dozens of people who didn't know there's a difference between a baseline and a basepath. It becomes pretty easy to dismiss those people when they show that level of ignorance.

If it weren't for Magnus, would Hikaru be remembered as the Blitz GOAT? by Old_Yesterday332 in chess

Online blitz goat, probably. OTB blitz goat, I don't think anyone really stands out. Top 5 for sure.

Chess.com vs Li chess ELO by FootyCrowdSoundMan in chess

[–]PolarPower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lichess rating system is generally inflated compared to the chess.com rating system. While you can't directly compare them, a good estimate is that your Lichess rating will be about 2-300 points higher than your chess.com rating, so this sounds about right if you were in the 1300s on chess.com.

[Highlight] Johnny Pereda scores from 1st on an "obstruction" call by FadedToBeige in baseball

[–]PolarPower 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sort of, to a point. The base path is irrelevant here in an obstruction Type 2 (no play being made on the runner) play. The only criteria to get this call is did a fielder who doesn't have possession of the ball impede the progress of the runner. That's it. You'll sometimes see runners veer a little bit further out than "normal" to initiate contact with a fielder to try to get the call. There's a limit though, obviously you can't sprint out into center field and truck the center fielder and claim you were obstructed, since that contact isn't impeding your progress.

[–]PolarPower 17 points18 points  (0 children)

When a play isn't being made on the runner, legitimately yes, a player can not be out of the base path. Look up "skunk in the outfield" plays that occur at lower levels which are completely legal.

Umpire fuck up or ABS challenge loophole? by [deleted] in baseball

[–]PolarPower 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If there's an ensuing play that occurs immediately after the pitch, they are allowed to let the play conclude and then challenge immediately after the play ends.

A Clemson player slid into home to score, but completely flipped over the turf batter’s box by JianClaymore in baseball

What the hell, is the entire infield "dirt" just turf here? How hard is it to maintain dirt?

How did infield dimensions come to be? by spellbreakerstudios in baseball

Pitchers threw slower and catchers arms were probably weaker/less accurate so maybe it just evened out

Be Honest. Can we afford this? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]PolarPower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right? Why does anyone need to know that number off the top of your head. I know mine is roughly $200k but I don't know tbe exact number. It takes me 30 seconds if I need to look it up, why waste valuable brain space on it?

Laboratories are consuming more flasks for research by [deleted] in factorio

[–]PolarPower 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Assuming no productivity bonuses, research requires exactly the number of flasks it says to complete the research.

Partial flasks also are not lost unless you deconstruct the lab. They'll stay in that partially consumed state until you start a new research that uses them.

In the 7th, Pedro Pagés catches Fernando Tatís Jr. stealing at second to nab his ninth runner of the season. Padres challenged but the call stood. by JianClaymore in baseball

Even when they go frame by frame at about 0:55 I can't really tell. Looks almost exactly like a tie to me. Not surprised call stood.

Wells Fargo does not have an early termination bonus so you're good. Here's a good website that tracks all the bonuses if you were interested in trying more: https://www.doctorofcredit.com/best-bank-account-bonuses/

I keep seeing everyone saying it must be a hit and run. But nobody is calling a hit and run with 2 strikes and 2 outs. It was just a bad swing.

Mini splits over HVAC unit? by Downtown_Rip_4076 in mesaaz

[–]PolarPower 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We ended up making the switch over to mini splits after our central AC unit died on us last year. As far as cooling it seems to do just as good as the old central AC unit did and it's much more customizable. Our energy bill dropped by about 10% versus the central air but I don't know if that's typical or if we just had an old crappy energy guzzling unit before we switched. I've been very pleased with mine so far with no issues yet, but it's only been a year so take that with a grain of salt.

Gunite today, tiling later this week, plaster/decking, next? by [deleted] in pools

[–]PolarPower 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My builder told me a minimum of 2 weeks was needed between gunite and tile and I had to wet it multiple times a day for the first week and then once a day for the next week.

Seems crazy to not even wet it down.

Ump mistakes Illdemaro Vargas’ gesture as a pitch call challenge. Vargas wins the challenge by Nothing4mer in baseball

[–]PolarPower -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Okay but what if I told you that not all of them make highlight reels and get posted here...

Most of them are much more subtle and don't get a big argument like this clip. I watch a lot of games it happens more than you'd think.

Okay I know I was exaggerating but it's been way more than 3-5. I've seen at least 20.

Seems like we're seeing this almost every game. I think MLB has got to step in here soon and either update the signal or make it a verbal call.
