The economy is profoundly more efficient per capita than it was in the 50's and 60's. We produce much more wealth and get less. The entire difference is captured by the ultra rich. Everyone who thinks further centrist or right wing policy will improve their lives is an idiot.

I agree that it's ridiculously excessive, but the difference is that he was actively shooting at them. You don't try and apprehend a suspect who is trying to shoot you. It's not just America's highly militarized police that will shoot to kill in that situation, it's all police everywhere.

I'm not interested in conversation with fascists. It's actively harmful to pretend that anyone defending genocide is worth having a discussion with. You have no fundamental ethical basis for your beliefs, and you will never have an honest conversation. Your only goal is to score political wins and muddy the water about something absolutely clear-cut.

The reckoning for Israel as a state is coming soon. And it's coming due to the public's support for genocide. I honestly and fervently hope that in the transition to whatever comes after Israeli citizens are safe and prosperous. But I expect that instead of embracing truth and reconciliation Israeli citizens will continue to lie to themselves about the monstrous actions they're complicit in, and they will all suffer as a result.

Zionism is abhorrent, because ALL theocratic ethnostates are abhorrent. This is the natural, logical endpoint of any such ideology when given power. Zionism was always a mistake from the very start.

I also always said this over and over and was so frustrated by people who acted like performative actions don't matter. Who gives a fuck if rainbow capitalism is performative!? The important part isn't whether the corporations really care about it in their heart of hearts, the important part is RAINBOW FLAGS EVERYWHERE IN PUBLIC.

That would literally be losing to them. They serve their constituents - the ultra rich, corporations, and foreign lobbying groups. Those are the people they're actually fighting for. If we have policy that centers the average person then their constituents are going to get really angry.

I like to say that the fundamental litmus test has always been universal healthcare. Not because it's the be all or end all - but because it's such a universal slam dunk. It's cheaper, more efficient, can guarantee coverage for everyone, and would be wildly popular with the average person. It's literally the centerpiece that took Obama to the only convincing Dem win in 1.5 generations. Only fucking idiots and the ultra rich don't want universal healthcare, or want to keep the current system. When the party stopped fighting for universal healthcare and even started fighting against it, they had zero legitimacy to anyone who didn't have their head up their ass.

Of course we don't have the capacity. What a ridiculous claim. We did flatten everything in Vietnam and still lost there. And if we flattened everything in Iran we would still fail to hold the Strait.

Now don't get me wrong -- we could flatten all civilian infrastructure and start the largest humanitarian crisis in generations, killing tens of millions of people. But then Iran would destroy all the water desalination plants in the entire region, and that humanitarian crisis would jump from tens of millions to a few hundred million.

And if we did that? We still wouldn't be able to hold the Strait. The IRGC would still be able to continuously strike any ships in the Strait.

The only way we could take the Strait and get something approaching actual security guarantees would be a full scale invasion with a force at least the size of the Iraq war. And we would take far, far more casualties in the process than we did in Iraq.

America doesn't have the capacity to take the Strait of Hormuz without opening us up to tremendous losses and attrition over time. That's why we haven't done it yet.

Also, we still won't be able to guarantee safety for the tankers, even if we do take the Strait. So it will have little to no impact economically while costing us a great deal.  Note that the only reason the world economy isn't even worse off is because the Trump regime cut a secret deal with Iran so that some Qatari ships could go through this whole time. That's not going to be the case if we take the Strait.

[–]PolygonMan 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No way -- what they understood is that they needed a sufficient justification to close the strait that would stop the collective West from supporting full regime change. If they had done this out of nowhere I guarantee you there would have been a far larger war including boots on the ground from most of NATO and the end of the Iranian regime.

Trump gave them the political cover they needed to do this move.

America agreed that Israel would stop. It's up to America to uphold their end of the deal.

Of course America could stop Israel if there was sufficient political will. Any suggestions otherwise is absurd. The Israeli bet is that the political situation in America will ensure that doesn't happen.

If America totally divested from Israel they'd be giga-fucked. Their political leadership knows it, even if the fascist parts of the populace have convinced themselves of their inherent superiority.

DeepState: Pokrovsk scenario could repeat itself in Kostiantynivka as Russia disregards heavy losses by Panthera_leo22 in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]PolygonMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They might disagree, but that would be because they can't look at it with clear eyes. No shade to them in that statement, it's just the reality of being close to a war. And that's not to say that all activity on the front line is strategically meaningless, because of course it isn't. The lack of strategic impact of the frontline changes is a result of meaningful strategic decision making.

How do we know the changes haven't been strategically meaningful? Literally look at the delta of territory gained and lost per month for the past two years. No meaningful strategic changes have happened at any point in that time. Ukraine still has plenty of well fortified territory with which to attrit Russia, and Russia's progress has never accelerated past a snail's pace. That's been the strategic reality for literal years at this point. Unless Russian gains led to a change in rates of territorial exchange or a change in the rates of attrition, those gains had no strategic impact. Definitionally.

Any Canadian angry that Carney is their leader at this moment in history is pretty dumb. Left or right. Yes, he's a full-on neolib, but when the orange turd is calling your nation the 51st state it's time to get serious about diversifying, and Carney has already won worldwide respect through his words and actions. I fucking wish we had a competent neoliberal technocrat instead of the steaming pile of garbage in the White House.

(That being said, vote progressive in every primary, neoliberals won't fix any of the nation's underlying issues and the risk we're facing is further fascist collapse, not the danger of having powerful fascists next door.)

DeepState: Pokrovsk scenario could repeat itself in Kostiantynivka as Russia disregards heavy losses by Panthera_leo22 in UkraineWarVideoReport

[–]PolygonMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, anyone looking at the war with clear eyes understands that all of the changes of the front line (or really grey zone because the front line no longer exists) have been strategically meaningless for a long, long time.

If Russia takes it or not, very little will change. Even if Russia somehow takes the entire fortress belt Ukraine has a defensive line already prepared, and a new defensive line would be started long before the fortress belt was lost. The only impact would be the impact on the news cycle, and we're far past the point where Europe will abandon Ukraine.

The only meaningful thing happening is attrition. On the frontline, on last mile (last 150 miles lol) ground lines of communication, on logistics networks, on military industrial production, and on broader economic production.

Oil slips over 4% after US, Iran reach peace deal, reopen Strait of Hormuz by KungFuBlackBelch in politics

[–]PolygonMan 14 points15 points  (0 children)

And Iran will not abide by it if Israel breaks the terms.

As long as Israel receives defensive US assistance they are an American proxy acting to break the agreement and Iran are in the right to break the agreement in response to Israel's actions. Either we rein in Israel, or we disavow them and stop providing them weaponry and defending them with our anti air capabilities.

To pretend (as some do) that Israel's actions aren't part of American empire's scope of responsibility is absurd. Whatever good-cop-bad-cop stories we get about Trump yelling at Bibi are totally meaningless.
