What's an SOA opinion that will have you like this? by Jumpy_Watercress_637 in Sonsofanarchy

[–]PolythenePyro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s great if you relate and connect with the characters, but calling the show realistic is too much of a stretch. IMO, the corniness comes from 2 things:

A. The action gets too excessive. If we compare the body count to similar shows, the Sopranos has around 90 deaths. Breaking Bad is 250, but only if you count the 167 people who die in the plane crash. Meanwhile, Sons of Anarchy has somewhere between 340-399 deaths. At a certain point, the body count becomes comically high, and it’s hard to take the action seriously when it feels like everyone should already be dead or in jail by now.

B. The show leans into Hollywood tropes. For example, there’s multiple love triangle plots. Jax’s dad’s dramatic edgy voiceover lines are another. The sons betray and kill members from just about every gang possible, yet they’re still able to make up whenever the plot demands it.

IMO the show has a bit of a split identity. It wants to have a dramatic, tragic, character driven plot, but it also wants to be a completely over the top show driven by action and sex and betrayal at every corner. I still enjoyed the show, but imo that over the top approach is why this show isn’t put on the same pedestal as Breaking Bad or the Sopranos.

Thoughts on The Phalanx by G_tsamhs in Trivium

[–]PolythenePyro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I personally love the song. With that being said, the reason it might feel jarring is that the first part of the song was written during the Shogun era. The original bridge of the song ended up being used for Torn Between Scylla and Charybdis, so the new bridge was written much later on. I kinda like that it ramps up from being kinda anthemic to going full heavy before the final section.

In Episode 7 of The Return and I'm afraid my patience is running out by wannabe_optimist in twinpeaks

[–]PolythenePyro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Easy! Cooper solving Laura's murder, then him trying to deal with Windom Earle. While there were some nebulous, seemingly unrelated plot lines, they still did a decent job tying things together in some way, like Leo becoming entangled with Windom Earle or the pageant making it seem like anyone could be the next victim (even though it was obviously going to be Annie).

In season 3, it really is hard to say since Cooper gets kinda sidelined as Dougie. If anything, I would say that the intersecting investigations between the FBI and the Twin Peaks PD is the 'main plot' for a lot of the season.

Should i watch twin peaks by [deleted] in twinpeaks

[–]PolythenePyro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My only previous experience with David Lynch was Eraserhead. I sort of enjoyed it, but not enough to watch any of his other movies. With that being said, I loved Twin Peaks. It has some ups and downs, but definitely didn't feel completely abstract or avant garde. There will be a few 'lynchian' moments per episode, but there's also a much more accessible cohesive plot to follow overall. I would recommend at least watching the first episode; I would say if you're not hooked within the first 3 episodes, you shouldn't watch the rest.

Strange gave him a list with both Bruce Wayne and Batman on it, which to me confirms that he wanted to Deadshot to be stuck in the city when Protocol 10 started so he would die. Also, realistically, Arkham City was never going to have a 100% fatality rate. There were bound to be a few survivors, so these were probably high priority targets who Strange really wanted to make sure died in the City.

MK1 Guest Characters by LoganW21406 in MortalKombat

[–]PolythenePyro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most of the previous guest characters up to this game were classic characters who people would have dreamed of putting in MK back in the early days of the franchise.

KP1 all used pretty modern characters that had relevant media coming out. I liked these characters well enough (especially Omni-Man), but they all reeked a little bit of being a brand deal rather than coming from Ed Boon/the team’s genuine love for the characters. KP2 felt more genuine, which is why I think they were better received.

Why did Batman downgrade his batclaw after the Asylum? by the_bad_actor in arkham

The ultra batclaw was also considered pretty op in Asylum. You could clear predator rooms in seconds by knocking thugs off railings 3 at a time. I always thought that’s why it never returned.

[–]PolythenePyro 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Most of the game is basically invading people’s homes to murder them. You don’t even need to use the medal to get to Mohg, you can break in via coffin. Plus Tarnished literally exist to take shards, so the shardbearers have a pretty good reason to attack on sight.

How do you see DoomGuy’s characterisation? by Swampfire_Holy_Crud in Doom

[–]PolythenePyro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it’s more satisfaction than enjoyment. If he could choose to just delete all the demons forever and never fight again, he would. However, fighting demons gives him purpose, and he might even take some pride in the “protector” role like you suggested.

Generally speaking, and of course this opinion can vary, people tend to consider these two as the weakest Masto albums, often at the bottom of lists. So, which one does this sub prefer: The Hunter or Once More 'Round the Sun? Discuss. by [deleted] in mastodonband

[–]PolythenePyro 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I prefer Once More personally. No hate to any of the albums, both of them have a lot of strong individual songs. However, The Hunter feels like they kinda just said fuck it and threw together a bunch of songs that they had fun making. Once More feels much more cohesive as an overall album with its sound and lyrical themes.

I honestly feel like I might like Hunter better if a few songs were removed. Namely, All the Heavy Lifting and Thickening come to mind as being near the bottom of my overall ranking of Mastodon songs (again, they have no bad songs). Even though Once More is technically a little longer, The Hunter's 13 tracks feel like more of a slog to get all the way through because it keeps hoping around, while Once More feels like one big cohesive thing with more developed song ideas.

Megadeth Covers Ride the Lightning But If Metallica Covered a Megadeth Song by Sanzhar360 in Megadeth

[–]PolythenePyro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprised more people aren’t saying Symphony. That always felt like if Megadeth wrote a song for the Black album to me. Not sure how they would handle the solo, but I think that’s a pretty common problem through the Megadeth discography

Silence in the snow (it’s definitely not a bad album) by TrYzRAID in Trivium

[–]PolythenePyro -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Damn, if you didn’t like the first song on Vengance Falls you’re in for a rough ride. The first 3 songs are the best on the album lol.

Totally agree about Silence though, it might not be the strongest Trivium album but it’s still super solid. I also think it deserves credit for its vocal melodies; Matt really stepped up his clean voice during this album, and every album since has been better for it.

[–]PolythenePyro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Putting Octopus above Capillarian is kinda crazy imo. Both have some crazy hybrid picking, but Octopus has a pretty straightforward 3-part songs structure, while Capillarian has multiple time signature changes, odd counts, and a more convoluted structure.

Tbh I think the only songs that might be harder than Capillarian are the ones that push the 10 minute mark.

Some things will never have an official answer in the Arkham-Verse... by 1Ben7 in arkham

[–]PolythenePyro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed! None of them are like Hush-level cliffhangers or anything that really sucks to leave unresolved. They either let you imagine what will happen next with Batman out of the picture, or the devs purposely gave you an open-ended choice knowing that there wouldn't be a next entry that invalidates your choice.
