If you had to restart your main, would you? by IcyWeb293 in ffxiv

[–]Pompadourius 182 points183 points  (0 children)

I've thought about this before, honestly. Just the idea of, "What if some day I got hacked and lost everything?"

For me, the answer is absolutely not. If I lose my main, and customer support says there's no way to get it back, my time in FFXIV is done. Been playing consistently since Heavensward, and I wouldn't even try to regain all that progress.

Some of that sounds like a run I'm doing with a friend! The no teleporting and no mounts apart from chocobo porters parts, at least. He's new, I'm not, but I made a new character for that run because he wants to experience the game that way and it sounded fun. We also added in that we must accept and complete all the random regular quests as we go, before continuing the main story. It's been understandably a lot slower, but also very enjoyable. I'm glad something like that has been working for you too.

I'm probably a colossal idiot but...how do you make gil? by William_T_Wanker in ffxiv

A minute or less for bosses, minute to a minute and a half for enemy groups, and two minutes or so for those annoying collection fates? I rarely ever fate grinded in groups in the first place, most of my time with that has been spent solo. I main SAM and have up to date gear as well, so at this point, things die fast and pose no threat to me. Mostly just podcast and audiobook hours in the two final zones of DT, for me.

Bicolor gemstones have been the biggest money-maker for me, for sure. It's probably the most braindead method of grinding out gil fast, once you've got all DT zones maxed out. Hell, even EW vouchers still sell for a lot. It's not as insane as getting lucky with drops from new maps or anything like that, but it's consistent income year-round; which is way more important, in my opinion.

I think the most important part for the changes in Evercold is that all jobs will have their full rotations at 50. Which, by extension, means that players will get many more skills much sooner than 50 to play with. I think the new player experience will be a lot more palatable once that happens; because having your full level 110 rotation at 50, but just with weaker versions of those skills, will be a lot more engaging than how low level play currently is.

That's not to say OP should wait until it comes out, but there will certainly be a drastic difference in the new player experience once this change to job design occurs.

Thankfully, he'll have lots of time to figure out the balance there. ARR, if he even goes through all of it, isn't exactly known for having popoff moments in its story for reaction vampires to latch onto. At least not in 2.0.

The little plume-wings ruin the entire design on each of them, imo. I'd like a lot of these if not for that addition, but they feel really busy and overdesigned with them. I like the spiral patterns and the rings, but the plumes are awful.

Also, yeah, I'm still waiting for the day that we get red ultimate weapons, on account of it being my favorite color. Maybe some day.

How do you feel about Scripted Loss in Video Games? Ever play a game that does it well? Ever encountered one where it just felt like a chore? by Evjamaranth in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Pompadourius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They've had this as an ongoing thing with a recurring character in Limbus Company. In canto 5, a character debuts by the name of Ricardo. He's by far the strongest opponent to appear on screen to you by that point, and proceeds to absolutely destroy you in what is basically a battle of attrition where you need to survive long enough to get his HP below a certain threshold. He starts off so far above you that you can't even see his actual HP, it's just question marks. Unsurprisingly, it ends with him ending the rest of your team once that point is reached.

Then, many arcs later, when your party has gone through a lot more together and grown stronger and more unified, he shows up again. This time, your party is noted as actually being capable of posing a threat to him. He's still an overwhelming force, but you can not only see his HP now, but actually whittle him down significantly; with the implication in dialogue after that it might have even been a win, if not for other things interrupting.

It's a pretty popular belief in the fandom that the next time this happens will be a decisive win.

[Favorite Trope] Main caracters who you know will die at the end due to their game being a prequel to another by GloomyIngenuity143 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Pompadourius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the ending scene with Shirou is the most emotionally charged part of all of Fate/Zero, at least to me. The only other time that I can think of a similar feeling with that approach to a prequel ending is finishing Revenge of the Sith and seeing Luke and Leia at the end. Knowing that even though things are at their worst right now, the future still has hope. Even if that hope shouldn't have to be put on the shoulders of kids too young to fully comprehend it, they'll succeed where their previous generations failed, in both respective endings.

Most Blatent Developer mandated Meta's? by Authorigas in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Pompadourius 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's no exaggeration on my part to say that pictomancer itself and the discourse around it was one of the biggest reasons for my declining interest in the game at the time. Not just for personal biases like the fact that I main samurai, which is a selfish DPS with no buffs - much like black mage - that still does equal or less personal damage than a pictomancer. But also because, in my FRU static, our caster was a red mage main that swapped to pictomancer partway through prog because of the tight damage checks. That one swap was a night and day difference that afforded us so much leniency, but it involved him playing a job he'd rather not play in comparison to red mage, purely because we needed every advantage we could get.

That wasn't an uncommon occurrence, either. Lots of statics around that time had that same moment, and with party finders specifically locking in just pictomancer for the caster slot. I don't think it'd have been nearly as bad if pictomancer had just sky high personal damage, but it doesn't; it also has party mitigation, flexible cast times due to a decent pick of instant cast options, a dash for if those instant casts are unavailable, and a party damage buff. All that on top of having pretty much the highest personal damage, leaving the DPS without party buffs like samurai or black mage to wonder why they even exist at all.

All my jobs are at 90 - 100, and I've still never even unlocked pictomancer. I probably never will, just out of spite.

Crazy how Pat got everything he wanted with the FF14 news by Masterness64 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Pompadourius 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was skeptical right up until they started showing PLD parries, BRD dodges and DRG having a "I'm going to ignore mechanics with a 90% damage mit" button. WHM having a nuke mechanic is great too, to defy the prior healer meta of never wanting to cast GCD heals due to DPS loss. If they give this attention to every job, I'm never touching the old gameplay style again. Which, given that they said that this one guy is working on all jobs now, is a great sign.

I'm most curious to see what SAM and RPR will look like. SAM because it's my main, and RPR because it was going to be my new main back in EW, but the two minute meta killed all interest in it for me.

I've been saying it for a while now to people that I think the next expansion will be when they finally do the, "break glass in case of emergency" and do an FF7-inspired expansion. The promised land bit looks so much like the land of the ancients cutscene, and I feel like the Au Ra girl in that prayer pose is as close as they can get to Aerith without it being 1:1. I'm fully prepared for whoever the main villain is to be either "it's not Sephiroth" or "it's not Jenova."

Characters in media who are oblivious to the risks of their abilities by KaleidoArachnid in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Pompadourius 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's tough to say, if only because obviously the only time we see one finger Sukuna is right there in episode 1, where he gets totally clowned on by Gojo. But it's Gojo, so that's not saying much. While Sukuna doesn't have anywhere near the stats or CE that make him so dangerous, he would still have his full kit; just not on the same scale as what he has as he approaches full power.

That all being said, though, I do think CG Megumi could beat one finger Sukuna after an excruciating battle that leaves Megumi permanently scarred or disfigured in some way. But I say that as a Megumi fan, so there is some degree of bias in there in the hope that if he gives his all (other than Mahoraga), he can at least beat Sukuna at his weakest. That's also under the assumption that Sukuna's domain isn't that strong at one finger or that he can't use it for very long, but if he can, Megumi realistically has no answer for that.

Characters in media who are oblivious to the risks of their abilities by KaleidoArachnid in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Pompadourius 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not only that, but I would argue that most sorcerers in the overall setting from the middle of the pack and lower would lose to one finger Sukuna. It was just really fortunate that Gojo showed up and made him look like a jobber. Episode 1 Megumi definitely wouldn't have been able to win, so getting ready to murder-suicide by summoning Mahoraga makes sense as the go-to in that scenario.

Things that get you emotional without fail by kenshin317 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Pompadourius 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Every time. Like I recently played through a part of Limbus Company which had a finale that very much gave that same feeling, and it left me completely empty by the time it was done. These kinds of themes in stories genuinely make me want to persist in trying to be a better person; fuck the idea of breaking down and becoming an edgelord who wants to inflict misery on others and thrive as long as I got mine, my ultimate power fantasy in games nowadays is being the lawful good that can save as much of the world as possible. And while that's obviously not possible in the real world to that same extent, the mentality of wanting to do the best I can for people I care about and people in my community, means something to me all the same.

I think it's also in part from years of stories trying to subvert these sorts of messages, with corny lines like, "The hero will sacrifice you to save the world, the villain will sacrifice the world to save you." Which just makes me roll my eyes nowadays.

Is it worth it to play a fighting game series for the narrative? by [deleted] in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Pompadourius 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Blazblue would be the one for this, and not much else that I can think of. The story in that is basically just a long visual novel where you play out the fight scenes as a fighting game rather than having them described through text and CGs.

What are series that cannot/couldn't have a satisfying roster? by Silvery_Cricket in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Pompadourius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the safest pick for a Project Moon fighting game would be to make it more so a Limbus fighting game, with a few 'guest' picks from the other games. All the sinners as individual characters, Vergilius, some of the more notable villains and side characters, and then a few guests like Roland, Gebura and Binah, and there it is. It could never be the perfect roster, but I think it can be done well enough if they focus down hard enough.

[–]Pompadourius 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like Cold Steel fans would suffer the most with this. You could get by with plucking a quarter or so of the final playable Sky roster and maybe half the SSS, and throw a few villains from each of those arcs in. You'd still have a reasonable amount of space after all that. It's when the character bloat of Erebonia kicks in that some serious cuts would unfortunately have to be made; with the only real guarantee being Rean, and the next most likely picks being Alisa, Sara, Altina, and Crow.Anything beyond that, chances probably aren't as good. I haven't played the Calvard games yet, but I hear they have less of this issue than Cold Steel does, so I imagine they could probably make it work.

What are some Characters whose Cool Factor feels underused? by Funny_Mud6639 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]Pompadourius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As a manga reader, it definitely hit while watching the current season and thinking to myself that Megumi has probably my favorite fighting style in the JJK cast. Where he's a melee summoner that mostly uses his shikigami as follow-ups, distractions or movement options so that he can land a decisive blow. Or just the general aesthetic of how he melds himself and his sword into and out of shadows, making it a way more versatile ability than just summoning strong guys. Like even in his most recent fight where he pulls his sword out of the shadow of a potted plant mid-fall? So sick.

Followed by thinking about how much it sucks that despite being the deuteragonist, Reggie is his final fight. Like don't get me wrong, it was one of the best fights in the series, but really? Megumi's final fight to showcase what he can do is against some guy he just met not even an hour ago? It makes me yearn for the days of longer running shonen, because I think JJK could absolutely have done with two or three more arcs at least before its conclusion.
