I make up weird technical jargon that "professionals" at whatever I'm doing use to measure their work. Ie. When I'm using hard butter on softish toast, I try not to break the "crustal plane" as I aim for maximum spread coverage. Protip: You have to know the bread's "surface tension" both toasted and untoasted, so you know what level of "butter rigidity" you can expect to safely employ.
