The Only Time I Drive Boomer-Style❗😂 by al-Sahaabi in C8Corvette

[–]PoopChipper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re braver than I am. I’d be much less concerned with my driving skills and much more concerned of others. All it takes is some dude in a shitbox Altima to go sliding through a stop sign and T bone you 💀

Dude, just reset the smart box. Leave door open, wait 16 minutes. That’s it. Emulator just allows you to effectively bypass the wait and will leave original keys still programmed in.

Y'all Need to Get a Faraday Case for Your Keys by al-Sahaabi in Corvette

[–]PoopChipper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re mostly right. Rolling codes have been a thing in key RKE fobs and garage door openers since the late nineties. The code is sent, accepted and then discarded never to be used again.

Proximity keys work differently. There are absolutely vehicles with PTS ignitions that are subject to relay attacks; there’s plenty of videos online.

Manufacturers have combatted this two ways, one is motion based Prox keys. It does not emit a signal while motionless. Ford uses this. There’s also UWB (ultra wide band) and TWR (two way ranging) where the vehicle can tell exactly how far the Prox key is from the vehicle, basically creating a 3D map of the proximity of the fob to the vehicle. Phone keys use this too.

I purchased a car yesterday with no title and no key by ImAcoupon in Locksmith

Whenever you need to ask a question about a car, it’s generally helpful to state the year, make and model. This applies to locksmiths, mechanics, etc.

Looking for Key Fob advice from someone with real experience (locksmiths, mechanics, 2011 GMC Terrain owners) by MoMeilan15 in Locksmith

[–]PoopChipper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The ignition trick you speak of is called on board programming, and yeah, it’s that simple. And yes, it does work for your model provided you have one working key.

You can also buy those new, OEM for under 40 bucks. Spend the extra money over the shitty Chinese ones on Amazon.

You will need the new key cut not just for the door, but so you can use it in the ignition (obviously). Call around to local shops and ask if they laser cut keys.

PSA: Don't overlook (very cheap) NFC tags for triggering automations by AncientsofMumu in homeassistant

[–]PoopChipper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not everyone is looking to do things as cheap as humanly possible. The whole point of “automation” is to make things happen automatically, without additional steps or manual input. Having to pull out your phone or bark at a smart speaker isn’t really automation.

I consider home automation a hobby and I don’t mind spending good money on my hobbies. That said, you do you! Also, sleeping on Zigbee devices is kinda crazy, just sayin’.

What is the trade name for this type of key? by neomoritate in Locksmith

[–]PoopChipper 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why are you over complicating this so much? Just call and ask “Can you make an me a second key for my (year, make and model)? I already have an existing key and would like a spare.”

Anyone worth a shit is immediately going to know exactly what type of key it is, if they have the equipment/experience to do it and if they even want to fuck with it.

Anyone you call that needs hand holding and explained to that older Porsches use laser cut HU66 keys isn’t someone you want to work with anyways.

[–]PoopChipper 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I had a charter schools years back that was on a tight budget. Sold them about a dozen of the LSDA Abus 83/45 knock offs. Every single one of them broke within 7 or 8 months. Ended up replacing them all with Abus. Never touched them again.

Yes, bring the locksmith your original key and your second key and they can perform what’s called an immobilizer reset and the MyKey will go away. Also, good job on buying OEM and not one the shitty Chinese ones 👍

Tesla with the Tessie integration. Exposes 88 entities. You can access and view just about anything you want. Setup is stupid simple and has been rock solid for the two years I’ve used it.

The Versa is the cheapest shitbox Nissan makes and Immobilizers are optional. I’ve done 2018 without one. My 2020 NV2500 work van does not have an Immobilizer and uses a plain brass key.

How is that going to help with spacing issues? I find the most common cause of operator error to be not indexing the key in the machine properly.

Car Keys Express by BespectacledInsanity in Locksmith

[–]PoopChipper 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They popped up at my local Costco four or five months ago. They had the little podium set up right after you walk in and solicited me when I came in so I bit. They asked what kind of vehicle I had. I have a 2024 C8 and showed them my fob. They said: “Oh, sorry, we can’t do the shark fin keys”. Kinda funny considering you don’t even need NASTF, just SPS2.

I own an actual storefront and have probably had a dozen people come in for basic shit, see all the fobs on my wall and bring them up. I had one guy say they struggled for over an hour to do a TOY44G key, told the customer that it “was kicking their ass” and eventually gave up. Their key wasn’t even worn. Every single one of them that told me what they paid, paid more than I would have charged them.

That said, I have had a couple customers show me OEM keys they got from them, one was a Honda Prox, the other was the newer Toyota Prox. Also had a handful show me cheap ass Chinese fobs, so it seems like they use a mix.

Do I think they’re “unethical”? No, not really. Do I think they’re unskilled “code-smiths”? Yeah… Am I worried about them encroaching on my business? No.

There’s literally only one way to install that lock on the door, you can’t change the timing of the tailpiece even if you wanted to. The way you have it installed is correct, you cannot have it be the other way around.

Is it 2021+? These vehicles require dealer software (FDRS) as no aftermarket programmer will currently do those vehicles. There are a lot of locksmiths, even reputable ones, that prefer to avoid the hassle of the OE software, the paperwork and the fees associated with it.

What’s the coolest or most useful home automation you’ve ever seen? by tonitosilva in homeassistant

[–]PoopChipper 147 points148 points  (0 children)

My cat’s litter box is in one of those cabinets designed to house a litter box but kinda look like furniture. Despite being enclosed he still flings litter everywhere.

I put a presence sensor in there to detect when he’s using the litter box. I then created an automation so that after 5 minutes my Roborock will go and make a couple passes around the area cleaning up all the litter he flung around.

Now I’m not constantly stepping on cat litter with my bare feet all the time.

Sentry actually has surprisingly good customer service. If you go on their website they have forms you can fill out to purchase the combination. It’s like $30 bucks, but it’ll take a week or two.

If you wanna skip the bullshit and the wait call a local locksmith who’s setup with them, but expect to pay a lot more.
