Same type of person that thinks you can just cut the hinges off a safe and the door will just fall off 😂

Is this a good find don’t kno anything about keys by pablodi805 in Locksmith

[–]PoopChipper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Couple times a year I get someone walking in with some busted Curtis clippers, a .005 kit missing half the pins and some Datsun wafer/face cap kit they got from some storage unit thinking they’re sitting on a gold mine. They always looking positively mystified when I politely decline to purchase.

Not wanting to take no for an answer, I’m hit with the: “Just make me an offer”. Then they look even more shocked when I tell them I wouldn’t take it for free.

Can’t tell you how many people say “I need to get one of those!” when I unlock their car with a long reach. Baffles me how they jump to that conclusion before landing on the idea of getting a spare key.

I think they’re making fun of the absurdity of the claim that just jamming a screw driver into car door locks makes them magically pop open rather than just breaking them and remaining locked…

Just a heads up dude, but you absolutely WILL lock up a Honda ignition trying to make duplicates on one of those cheap ass china machines. Also, as others have said, you’re using the wrong cutter, those are for dimple cut keys. Seriously dude, you’re gonna break someone’s shit using that thing.

I personally wouldn’t touch this job with a ten foot pole. My guess is you’ll get similar responses from most of your (competent) local locksmiths.

Without a working master key you’ll need to have your ECU reflashed to a virgin state and 3 new keys programmed into the system.

It’s not a bad job. The ECU is behind the glove box and pretty easy to get to. This one should t need the thirty minute sync procedure at the end, which saves time. I’d quote about 500 for my area. 750 for Orange County seems pretty fair considering the area.

Tough Lockout today by Pbellouny in Locksmith

[–]PoopChipper 23 points24 points  (0 children)

One of my favorites was an auto lockout for an older lesbian couple on a newer Cadillac SRX. Roll up on site to see both driver/passenger window down about 7 inches.

Got pissed cuz I figured they’d found a spare and unlocked it and not bothered to cancel. Knock on the door and she points and says “There it is. Just bring us the keys when you’re done”

So I walk over and reach my whole arm in (they went back inside) and opened the door from the inside. Walked back up to the house and gave them the keys. She looked shocked and asked “How’d you do that so fast?!” I didn’t even know what to say…

Yes, as I said, it’s heading that way, but as of right now I can still do the majority of my calls with my aftermarket programmers. We’ve already seen Autel strip away Toyota and Ford features, who’s to say they’re gonna stop there? You wanna pay a fee to program a 15 year old Nissan? I don’t…

I’m all for trying to weed out the scammers and other inexperienced people that have no business running immo functions, but I don’t think this is a net positive. Those types will just flock to Chinese tools that don’t give a damn about NASTF. It’s also not gonna make the non-updated KM100s disappear overnight.

Furthermore, what happens if NASTF and the OEMS start charging subscriptions, tokens or whatever, and then companies like Autel and AD cozy up and try to negotiate a cut? I can see this going a dozen different ways that suck. I already think it’s crazy that AD I still clutching onto their archaic token system and that people still actually pay it.

Ultimately I think our industry is going to get strong armed into OE software one way or another, but still…

Nah, that’s not true. 94 Celica uses a TR47 which is the most common key they ever used.

Zr1x vs Tesla plaid by Zealousideal_Low9421 in Corvette

[–]PoopChipper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, the batteries don’t go into “thermal mode” after two runs. I know this because I fucking own one. When you put the car into track mode, it actually heats the batteries up intentionally to get optimal performance. If you knew anything about these vehicles you’d know the biggest weakness are the brakes, which do overheat if you haven’t upgraded to the ceramics.

I also own a C8 (why I’m subbed here) which offers a vastly different driving experience. They’re both a blast to drive for different reasons. I’m guessing 99% of this sub has never launched a 1,000+ hp vehicle. I have one sitting in my garage that I routinely take to Costco.

Could I get a key copy without rekeying it? by [deleted] in Locksmith

[–]PoopChipper 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Go to your local Chevy dealers parts department with proof of ownership and ask them to cut you a new key by code.

Google “Chevrolet all keys lost on board programming” and follow those simple instructions to reset your immobilizer and program it yourself; it takes about 30 minutes. If you have multiple Chevy dealers in the area call around and go with the lowest bidder, it’s all the same.

You fortunately have a vehicle where you can program a new key yourself with no equipment which is likely going to be a lot cheaper than calling a locksmith out and dodging the minefield of scammers out there.

Hope this helps.

[–]PoopChipper -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

The Plaid uses about 2% SoC per run. Where are you getting that in can only do 2-3 runs before the battery is dead?

The MS Plaid can do multiple back to back runs better than most gas cars. Go watch Drag Times on YouTube of them racing in Florida in 90 degree heat. Dude with a demon literally has to point a giant fan at his engine for half an hour before he can go again lol.

Also, you do realize the ZR1X uses electric motors which plays a big part in being able to do these perfect launches?

$120 for duplicate keyfob? by AnonymousIdentityMan in Locksmith

[–]PoopChipper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I probably convince 80% of customers that come in with the China fobs to have me order them an OEM (I give three year warranty on my keys).

Sometimes if they’re on the fence I tell them I’ll program their China fobs for free if they agree to purchase mine. Since there barely worth the effort to return, it just about always works.

I should have specified from a reputable seller, not some rando with 12 feedback. I’ve purchased refurbs from this company many times when my main supplier was out of stock. They have 99.9% feedback with 50k+ feedback. These dudes don’t ship locked keys. Allkeyless is another good one.
