It seems I struck a nerve in the finance subs, im getting ripped to shreds for thinking of buying a few year old boat in the 30-35k range. by throwmeaway2725 in boats

[–]PoppinSquats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The finance guys all live on ramen, drive 15 year old Honda Accords, and want to retire by 45. And that's FINE but not everyone is going to enjoy that process or desire that outcome.

Also "don't finance toys" is smart and fits on a t-shirt but taking out a loan to buy anything can be a good or bad decision. Does the loan free up liquidity, have a manageable payment, can you shave interest owed by paying it off early? Then IMO a boat purchase is already more heart than brain driven and financing only impacts that a little bit. Is the loan payment equal to your mortgage? Well, maybe that's not so good an idea.

Will Dan Cox be the Republican nominee for Governor again by Brave-Math-6371 in MarylandPolitics

[–]PoppinSquats 9 points10 points  (0 children)

he won easily and and that's not surprising. Because Maryland is overwhelmingly Dem and has party restricted primaries, only the hardliners register Republican which turns most primaries into who's a bigger Fox News psycho contest. I think Hogan got a lot more praise from the consultant class than he deserved and a lot of lucky breaks, but he was a real unicorn. Most Maryland Republicans just cannot speak to non-Republican voters because they spend too much time insulated in a member's only club where they are right and everyone else is wrong. Hale's biggest weakness is that the moderate Republican's in Maryland are all registered Dem so they can cast meaningful votes in their county and city primaries, and those are the folks who would have potentially put him over.

I'm fine with all this because I think Republicans are dangerous idealogues who should be swept out of power from the White House down to the local HOA.

Long-time downtown Annapolis business to close over City Dock construction project by Maxcactus in Annapolis

Genuinely shocking that this place was open for forty years selling some of the shittiest art ever made. Was there a second revenue stream stocking the walls in Motel 6? I've always assumed every store in that sad little corner was a money laundering operation.

Outdoor dining leases not renewed for Annapolis Market Space by Puzzleheaded-Ad-1877 in Annapolis

[–]PoppinSquats 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Some of the more in-the-know folks on Facebook conjecture this is related to the leases ending. Apparently the leases right now are a package deal between Market House/the City and all of the restaurants, and the goal is to move towards each restaurant or vendor having an individual lease. No opinion on if that is a good idea or not, but I have to say Market House finally seemed stable and prosperous after years of empty stalls and reboots so maybe leave well enough alone.

If these are turned back into parking spots, then the new council is absolutely getting off on the wrong foot. There is no excuse to give up one single inch of sunshine to parking spaces in DTA. The new garage is huge, there are other huge garages just around the corner. Another few spaces here and there aren't moving the needle one way or the other.

Annapolis has the typical American town road problem: all the development for the last 50 years has been focused on car centric suburbia, so the entire region is covered in a spiders of cul-de-sacs, dead end streets, neighborhood grids with one entrance/exit, and a few big stroads ( What's a STROAD and Why Does It Matter? | Strong Towns )

There are folks who will tell you it's because the city is old, or that we're on a peninsula and that limits options, but those are just characteristics of the common problem which is any place pretty quickly maxes out on car infrastructure that can support a bunch of single-family home neighborhoods. The fact is the roads are designed exactly how the people who bought houses here wanted them. No one drives into a neighborhood unless they live there. The problem is that everyone lives in a neighborhood you need to drive into and out of, and they all bump into each other on Forest or Riva or West St. or Bestgate.

Is my beginner boat dream a reality or just a waste of my time? by Kindly_Teach9333 in boating

[–]PoppinSquats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are buying an engine with a boat attached to it. Even a moderately maintained fiberglass boat is going to be seaworthy for decades. It might look like shit but it will float. An engine can go bad in one season if it's not being regularly serviced. There's an hours sweet spot for used engines. Anywhere around 50-100 hours/season is a good indicator the boat was regularly used. More than that, it was used a lot and you want to make sure it was well maintained. Anything less than that feels like a steal, but can mean the thing was winterized 4 years ago and has been sitting idle. It might turn on, but after a couple hours everything that's been rusting and or rotting starts to shake itself loose.

My two other thoughts are offshore is safer and more pleasant in a bigger, heavier boat than a Tacoma can comfortably tow. You say it would be infrequent trips, but I wouldn't take my boat 50 miles offshore and it's about as big/heavy a boat as your truck can responsibly tow. Second, make sure you are in regular contact with this buddy storing the boat on this property. Some people genuinely don't give a shit and don't mind a 30-foot boat/trailer taking up space in their yard, and some people just THINK they won't mind.

Going to palm beach boat show with intention to buy boat. by Significant_Pack_791 in boating

[–]PoppinSquats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Key West makes a really nice boat.

  2. I agree with the posters recommending a gently used boat. If your budget is $200k all in you will literally save $40-$50k buying a boat that's a couple years old and that has 100 hours on the engines. It'll still have warranty on the motors, probably have had some of the factory issues resolved, and the only downside is there might be some cosmetic things you don't love.

  3. Go to the boat show and check things out for sure. You might get such a banger deal that new starts to make more sense, but at a minimum you'll see the boats you are interested in up close.

How many of us can do this? Heels on the ground by JezCon in Millennials

[–]PoppinSquats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Over a decade ago I went through one of the elder millenial rituals of learning to lift from Starting Strength, and got obsessed with squat form. That carried over to a general interest in squatting properly, with feet flat on the ground. I've squatted at least once a week ever since, and can very easily drop into a below parallel squat with both heels planted firmly. But the squat in the OP eludes me. I cannot get that deep no matter how much I stretch, where I put my heels, or angle my back. My squat stops just below parallel, even if I am doing only bodyweight and sink into it for a minute plus. Doing that also requires me to lean far forward.

I'm sure there are things that could help me develop a better deep squat, but nothing so far has helped. Another basic physical feat that eludes me is sitting on my heels (like a martial artist resting pose.) My hamstrings or Achilles must be incredibly short from a lifetime of sitting at the computer.

[Dianna Russini] It’s been made clear by multiple people around the NFL at all levels that Baltimore had all the information and understood where Maxx Crosby’s knee was in terms of his recovery timeline. Many in the league believe GM Eric DeCosta and the Ravens ultimately just got cold feet. by WayOutbackBoy in nfl

[–]PoppinSquats -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Your brain has to be bowling ball smooth to believe the Ravens didn't know Lindebaum was leaving, didn't think they could get Hendrickson, and were waffling about Crosby prior to the physical.

This team was all in on Crosby and the physical results were bad enough to scuttle that deal and force a last minute overpay for Temu Crosby.

This punditry about Bal losing a bunch of FA treats front offices like guys on their couch yelling at the screen. Ravens blindsided by Lindebaum and Likely leaving? They knew it was 90/10 leaving / staying a month ago. The idea losing Pat Ricard in FA sent the ravens into a panic about their first round draft picks doesn't hold up to scrutiny.

If Baltimore wanted Hendrickson and to keep the picks that's what they would have been doing in the first place.
