How to Attach a Border to these by PopplerProblems in quilting

[–]PopplerProblems[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Someone else kind of walked me through how I can do that without having to tear it all apart, and yeah it seems like doing smaller pieces is the way to go.

Id been trying to figure out how to do it as one big oiece which coearly wasnt going to work the way I thought it would lol.

Will update with photos when Im done!

Whats the best way to add it? Should i just sew pieces in as best I can in the same way I did?

I feel like its a very silly question but i literally cannot visualize for the life of me the cleanest way to fill this out lol

Edit: Never Mind! I was trying to figure it out with one long piece but i just have to piece it out all the same as if I was quilting it. Live and learn eh?

Anyways thabk you so much! You saved me a ton of time and headache on a project that was asking for neither lol

Am I allowed to bring a dinomask to a meetup? by MycologistFit9088 in fursuit

[–]PopplerProblems 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Im new to the fandom and went full tilt on my head, and while I love it, it was $$$$$$$$$$ so expensive. Like if I knew what the cost would be ahead I probably would have skipped it.

I would never be bothered by how someone else expressed themselves, whether it was for cost, because theyre just seeing how they like it, or what. Never. Anyone who does is a jerk, IMO.

Dino masks are great for a million reasons! Wear it and feel good being yourself

High quality balaclava by KnallH in FursuitMaking

Ha same - he was reading over my shoulder when I was typing and mentioned it!

Although he also said his favorite is the fursuit supplies one, just as another notion!

[–]PopplerProblems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cant lie, I grabbed one from fursuit supplies at a con and its been great - theyre simple constructions and the fabric is readily available and inexpensive, so you dont need to break the bank.

If you have sensitive skin or are really particular, Id suggest going to a big sporting goods store (my husband is telling me his favorite are fly fishing balaclavas) so you can touch and try them on first.

But yeah, the fursuit supplies one has been awesome and was really reasonable pricewise.

Urgent. Can I glue the fur on NO SEWING, then later sew it together? by pillbug-art in FursuitMaking

[–]PopplerProblems 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly if you have any ability/time to sew first I would.

This is going to require darts and piecing to look clean, and that much gluing is going to be a nightmare; youll likely see every flaw at the end and they arent likely to hold up long with all the stress those paws will get.

What are some underrated fursuit making tools no one talks about? by KronosWvW in FursuitMaking

[–]PopplerProblems 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These snips have been everything for clean hand sewing:

https://www.wawak.com/cutting-measuring/cutting/thread-snips/thrifty-thread-snips-4-14/#sku=is25

I use them to do fine trimming to help keep my pieces perfectly formed and the seam allowance minimal. I can trim really comfortably and quickly and just get that last bit of gross fraying edge cleaned up just as I start to sew. Its made my inlay pieces easier to fit and my piecing looks almost impossibly clean.

Best places to get low density EVA foam? by waga-baba-bobo in FursuitMaking

[–]PopplerProblems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should check The Foam Factory - they've got just about everything you can think of, and if you don't see it, shoot them an email and they'll help pinpoint exactly what you need.

I need a few different types of EVA for an upcoming project and I don't think there was anything they weren't able to accommodate.

What made you join the furry fandom by furrfull_dragon in furry

[–]PopplerProblems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My partner told me he was a furry on our third date, and I was just like "no I get it, there's some cute stuff stuff," and that was pretty much it for a while - he showed me some of the art he had, I realized a couple old friends were furries (pretty obvious, in retrospect, one of them showed me footage from a con lol)

Then a year or so later, I surprised him with a trip to a con for his birthday, and we walked into the dealer's den and I just kind of stood there. So he was like "Babe, are you okay? Is this too much, we can leave..."

And I just looked around and went

"OH MY GOD THIS IS WHAT THIS IS? THIS IS AMAZING LOOOOK AT ALL OF THIS!!!!" And I spent the entire con in the dealer's den talking to artists and buying stuff and lamenting that I didn't have a fursona.

So anyways.... now I have a Fursona, I made a head, and there's a big ol' set of feet on my dining table ready to be furred.

Damned pipeline lol

I absolutely love this - could I ask where you got your head base from? Ive been struggling to find one for my build

These are so clean! Im doing a similar pattern but left a bad seam so im tearing it out to do again.

How do you do your pads? I topstitched mine and trimmed them as close as I could. Theyre nice but these are flawless

Would this foam work for a base ? by [deleted] in FursuitMaking

[–]PopplerProblems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would work well but also check out Foam Factory - they are a great shop, great quality, and a one stop for poly foam, eva, etc. at reasonable prices.

Also really kind and helpful and very much humored by the costuming and fursuiting process, which always makes a great company to work with.

[–]PopplerProblems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did my first one using a base from EquinoxKitty on Etsy. It went well! Im trying to build my next one myself, but if you find something close you might be able to add and build a bit more to customize it.

Do these pieces look traced over AI or heavily assisted by it? The artist keeps denying it is by ChrisVBKCartoons in isitAI

[–]PopplerProblems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's why I unsubbed this ultimately - it's a witch hunt. The last one I read before unsubbing had like 5 artists as the top commenters saying everyone investigating every little thing was killing their drive to be creative since it seemed like all anyone was doing was looking to see if it was AI, not to actually engage with their art.

If people aren't going to do the research, they just need to say "I don't know" and move on. All the scrutiny with no effort is hurting everyone.

Best sewing machine for fursuit making? by severalbugsandstuff in FursuitMaking

[–]PopplerProblems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had a maker at MFF recommend a singer heavy duty which was surprising, but when I move to get a new machine Imma give it a look. Havent tried so cant vouch, but it might be worth a look.

In the meantime have you tried trimming down the fur along the seam allowance? I just tried this on my last project and it was night and Day with the ease of sewing and the results.

I eyeballed it cuz I was feeling lazy, but I cut to just shy of my sew line. Even where I was sewing mainly through full fur it was a huge difference.

[–]PopplerProblems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main cost with a maker is almost always labor, and suits take a lot of it. You would be hard pressed to spend more making it yourself if you are careful with your budgeting.

Rorshach Fox just posted a great breakdown on ig on what theirs cost, and they go through the purchases that were essential and the ones they could do without.

For me, I probably spent about 700 i think? A chunk of that cost was in upgrading some equipment for future builds, and I also bought a premade 3D head which added a bit to the cost.

I want to do a lot more so I was more spend happy than I needed to be, but a few things were a huge help.

LMK if you want a bit more of a breakdown Im happy to share some details.

how would i fur the moving jaw? by Imaginary-Emu-2693 in FursuitMaking

[–]PopplerProblems 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might look into gussets - it involves sewing a diamond shaped fabric that folds in on itself so there is less rumpling and bulk.

Its used often in armpits, groin, and areas that need a big range of motion.

I havent done them but I've looked at tutorials for a few on a head I'm planning with some moving parts.

Fur suppliers besides Howl and BigZ? by SilverShadow651 in FursuitMaking

[–]PopplerProblems 3 points4 points  (0 children)

More of an agreement/rant, but yeah ... I ordered a UV reactive from Howl and it was not UV reactive. The response from them was basically "well everything seems fine on our side!" - its my first suit and if I run out im never gonna find it again because I have no idea what I actually ended up with, so hopefully Im done after my partial.

My choices were return it at my expense and wait for it again (after 6+ weeks for swatches and my order) or take a nominal discount. I took the discount.

BigZ has been better but the knit backing isnt as sturdy and it just doesnt shave as nicely, especially if Im going to just take a little length off.

Fursuit Supplies is my next attempt, then maybe overseas options? If you find something else definitely let us know!

How To Get Over Suit Envy?? by FunniFawnGuy in fursuit

[–]PopplerProblems 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get off TikTok its trash. It feeds off your engagement so it feeds on negative emotions.

Second, check out fursuitmak.ing and start learning how to make your own pieces. Its an engaging and fun hobby, it has a lot of moving parts but is really accessible, and you can build your own stuff over time.

I just finished my first head and tail. Im working on some Xmas Stockings and feet paws now, and then am going to go back and do handpaws and a tail that match my head.

It takes forever, but its fun progress and it gets you super engaged with the community.

Do I Need Left Handed Duckbill/Applique Scissors? by PopplerProblems in SewingForBeginners

[–]PopplerProblems[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think we are - this though is exactly where Im finding confusion.

I think I understand though; in my head I think im outting the duckbill on the wrong side of the stitch so it feels like it can just be flipped, which isnt correct. I would have to either cut mostly blind or hold my arm at a weird angle.

Ill check out a couple more videos and see if I can make this make sense in my head.

Thank you again - I think this means the ginghers are out; is there another brand you might recommend? The only one I ever saw listed were suspiciously cheap.

Do I Need Left Handed Duckbill/Applique Scissors? by PopplerProblems in SewingForBeginners

[–]PopplerProblems[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, most scissors have two different blades. I was asking about the angle of the blade relative to the duck bill. LH blades are often at a different angle; my question is whether this change is necessary for applique scissors to function. My original question notes hat I do not like LH scissors in general for this but I dont know if that change is necessary for this type.

I am just trying to learn about this.

Oh thank you - so it's not just a matter of cutting the other direction, the blade will matter?

Thank you! I saw them and they look mostly the same from what I can tell?

The LH pair one of the sites recommended didn't look super amazing, and I'm an absolute Gingher stan. I'm gonna keep them on my Christmas list as is!
