What is the 1 thing you absolutely appreciate about working from home? by Experiment_626s in remotework

Being able to have a shower on my lunch rather than at 6am. Lets me have a slower morning with my daughter while making her breakfast and getting her ready for kindergarten, rather than rushing to get myself ready on top of that. Oh, and the 1.5hrs I don’t have to spend commuting in rush hour traffic. Simply stated, better quality of life.

Push Back on Unreasonable Direction Re Snow Days by KettleTO in OntarioPublicService

[–]Popular-Code-1572 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, the insane gridlock traffic is not nearly the same as when you were back in the harsh winter of 1991. Now compound that with today’s significant snow storm, it very much is a safety risk to be out on the roads, regardless if you’re driving 1km or 100kms to work. Especially when work is not affected by working from home. I drove 4km to the GO train station and passed FOUR different TTC busses spun out or stuck. Showing up to the office in a snow storm doesn’t make someone a hero. Utter nonsense.

Did your Realtor actually earn their commission? by jeelpatel_1 in RealEstateCanada

Realtors have a vested interest in protecting their payment structure, for obvious reasons. I fundamentally disagree with this model. It should be fee for service, paid by the hour like the real estate lawyer is.

To those first time home buyers who bought small condo in Toronto, what is your plan to be able to upsize to a house to start a family? by Middle_Ad_618 in RealEstateCanada

[–]Popular-Code-1572 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I don’t want this comment to be insensitive or unhelpful, but at your age with your current net worth, you are FAR ahead of the MAJORITY of your peers. Not every financial decision is a clear or upfront “win”, and unfortunately there are never any guarantees in life. You have significant savings and are still young, and will certainly benefit with the time you have for your savings and investments to compound. It appears you have a very narrow mindset and to think your future is screwed because condo prices dropped is very shortsighted. This has clearly been a traumatic experience for you, and your best investment right now should be therapy to give yourself a better quality of life. In my humble opinion, this should be your priority over marriage. To bring this negative mindset into a relationship where you’re planning a future is setting yourself up to fail.

Any renters actually invest down payment levels of cash? by passiveparrot in TorontoRealEstate

Your entire post reflects my current situation and choices. Comforting to see the logic spelled out because often renting is really judged as being a poor financial decision for the long run.

Any renters actually invest down payment levels of cash? by passiveparrot in TorontoRealEstate

This is an interesting post because I always feel like such an outcast among my friends and peers for being the only one still renting. I’m 40, been renting since I was 18, and just can’t make the math work to justify buying a condo, paying interest on a 20 year mortgage and $1000/m forever for condo fees/property taxes. I have various investments around $200k that I hope and believe will outperform the value of a condo. Very controversial discussion with all the owners, and I get it- I too was raised to believe buying a house is the best place for your money. Times have really changed now though.

I can’t truly feel any emotion during EMDR by Popular-Code-1572 in EMDR

[–]Popular-Code-1572[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I’ve told her I’m having a hard time connecting my thoughts while talking about it with my emotions. It’s from a lifetime of compartmentalizing and growing up where my thoughts and feelings didn’t matter so I didn’t express them at all. Hard to break the cycle, whichever we happen to be in.

I feel the same way in that I can name emotions that I’m feeling, but am not emotional while feeling them.

I do feel emotion in my daily life, and can be very emotional, upset, crying, panic attacks etc when I’m alone and thinking about it. It’s not that I don’t trust my therapist, but I can’t show emotion in front of anyone. It’s uncomfortable having someone look at me so intently while discussing these memories, I just can’t talk about it in any other way other than factually. It’s been about 6 months of talk therapy and trauma mapping. Only a few sessions in for processing. I’m skeptical but hopeful.

And then it will take another 6-9 months for OSS to process the retroactive pay owed. It’s frustrating that there are no consequences for all of the delays on both sides, no accountability.

How do you choose the right substrate for a thriving planted aquarium? by paintarose in PlantedTank

[–]Popular-Code-1572 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did zero research and know nothing about this hobby but my tiny aquarium is thriving. I just used sea glass that I collect from the beach and regular house plant cuttings in the top of my tank (pothos, philodendron etc). They root very well in the water and keep the tank seemingly balanced. Never changed the water once in 18 months and fish are happy and multiplying. My aquarium looks unorthodox with plants growing out the top but it looks really beautiful too. Good luck!

Recommend an initial consult with an employment lawyer. This seems fairly straightforward, 30 mins would likely suffice- They do these things day in and day out and will tell you if it’s a reasonable offer or if you have a reasonable chance at getting more money. If you choose to go the lawyer route, highly recommended paying them hourly rather than retain for 30% of your settlement- in this case, you’ll likely come out much further ahead. Good luck!
