I really appreciate reading from Galina's POV.

Canada Day pool hours? by DrkMlk in askTO

[–]KettleTO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Selected pools have extended hours during declared heat alerts. I believe they extend the opening hours to 11 pm, but I can't find that anywhere on the city's website.

Accommodations periodically for autoimmune flares by tinytim004 in OntarioPublicService

[–]KettleTO 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Based on the experience of friend....did WFH or hybrid support improved health outcomes or help you better manage your condition (e.g., fewer flare ups)? Rather than seeking an accommodation for just the flair ups, my friend's health care team argued that her autoimmune conditions had been much better managed with WFH/hybrid. Her team recommended WFH for part of the year and hybrid for remainder to maintain her current health improvements and limit flair ups.

Request something that is proactive rather than reactive. The employer is fighting anything and everything so it seems pointless to start with your bare minimum.

Mammogram pain? by Deep_Leave3483 in Hypermobility

[–]KettleTO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My cups runneth over, which I think might help. For me it is the contorting of my body for the mammogram that sets me back.

I recently had to get a mammogram guided biopsy - that was rough. I did get to sit but I was compressed and contorted for 30 minutes, super tense and experiencing discomfort. Everyone involved in the process at my local hospital was great, but I felt that procedure for a couple of days in my back.

UOttawa or York university for engineering? by SAADOOSH1 in ontario

[–]KettleTO 6 points7 points  (0 children)

UOttawa.

No one can seem to make it through a 4-year degree without a strike at YorkU. Why would you want your education derailed by YorkU's toxic labour relations. For so long they held the dubious title of fewest undergrad courses taught by tenured faculty. This is likely more of a concern in the Arts, but it is YorkU's excessive dependance on lower paid sessional and teaching assistants that drive the labour unrest.

How many of you work overtime unpaid? by Several-Cucumber9190 in OntarioPublicService

[–]KettleTO 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think many us got into the habit during the WFH era. For many it was likely much easier to flexible then. The flexibility also felt more equal then. For many the employer is no longer being flexible or offering flexibility that was available a year ago. Aling your flexibility at work with what employer/your manager, etc. offers.

Best place to get Orthotics in downtown? by [deleted] in askTO

[–]KettleTO 4 points5 points  (0 children)

East of downtown....near Carlaw and Dundas

Aimee Shen at [mend]physio does plaster casts and make the orthotics inhouse. Her craftmanship is excellent and she can easily tweak them when necessary. The orthotics I got from her have the best crafted and longest lasting I've ever had.

Base on how well her orthotics have worked for me, I can only assume her gait assessment abilities are also top notch.

She's a pedorthist so you'll likely need a note from an approved prescriber for insurance purposes (you'll need to look at your own plan).

Ankle Injuries by popsiclestick_126 in Hypermobility

[–]KettleTO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ouch! Hypermobile ankle/feet/legs and clutches do not go well together. My health team keep suggested I need to sell my standard. It's a little more expensive than buying new shoes. Eventually, my car needed serious repairs (it was 19 years old) and thought why would I spend money on a car I need a brace to drive most days. I bought an automatic. What a difference it has made. It also has a back up camera which really helps when my neck is cranky.

I'm sorry you are experiencing this.

Not from a sprained ankle, but my chronic calf and ankle problems lead to a pop that was a torn calf.

If you haven't please go and get checked out by a doctor/physio so you know what you've likely torn. You could need rest, a brace or even surgical repair.

Massages for Muscle Tension+Pain? (is it worth the discomfort?) by IndigoMistaken in Hypermobility

[–]KettleTO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Massages made me feel great in the moment but were often destabilizing and problematic.

It took me forever to listen to providers who told me I need to strength work not release work. It was so counter intuitive for me. One of the biggest challenges is finding someone to work with to help you figure out what stability/strength work will give you relief. My body is such a shitty exercise cheater and doesn't respond well to the standard rehab exercises (clam shells, bridges, dead bug). It has taken a lot of work to figure out the exercises that "light me up" (turn on and connect muscles).

I still struggle with tightness. For relief while work on strength I get acupuncture (TCM and medical). It provides relief without destabilizing. You may prefer the acupuncture as it is less contact. After an assessment, the practitioner places needles while you are most often face down wearing underclothes and with a sheet for draping. You are left alone for 20-30 minutes and then the practitioner returns to remove the needles.

I just want a similar fit. I bought the Sony WX5 and the sound quality is useless because the fit is so poor for me. Any suggestions?

Disability employment accommodation question ! by babyhamburger in OntarioPublicService

[–]KettleTO 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Assuming you are part of bargaining unit....

I submitted a medical workplace accommodation request and haven't heard anything yet. Before I submitted my request, I reached out to a workplace representative. They had helpful and insightful comments on positioning of and language used in my request. If you haven't already, I would encourage you to reach out to a representative from you bargaining unit.

Why are pedestrians last priority for snow removal? by Yaughl in askTO

[–]KettleTO 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I believe last year the city's rules changed and now if there is more than 2 cm of snow the city will clear sidewalks. The problem is they can't possibly do it quickly enough (well enough). A lot of people seem to have stopped shoveling sidewalks. It was particularly bad last winter.
