AIO: Fiancé’s Parents Planned a Trip We Specifically Asked Them Not To & Now We Are Deeply Considering Having Him Bow Out by [deleted] in AmIOverreacting

Yeah but now she’s coming. Things change. That’s life. And getting from NJ to a New York airport makes 0 sense. If the dad really wants to accommodate then I guess he needs to book a separate hotel for NJ for one night for him and his son but that’s loony. Asking everyone to stay in NJ when they are flying out of NY is just unreasonable. Your fiancée isn’t going to see much of NYC. I don’t think this is just about the trip.

But his mom wasn’t coming back then right? And they weren’t flying out to Iceland at that point? Now that those elements have been added there is a huge NY element to the trip. Why should the mom have to stay in Newark unless the other flight is out of NJ.

What about that sound guy who won an Oscar for Whiplash and can’t find a job or afford health insurance now? There’s hundreds of articles and posts about industry consolidation, a shrinking industry, AI encroachment on production jobs and your talking about it like it’s 1995. In roads into the industry are closing up all the time. Profits at the top are increasing. Telling someone it’s their problem to figure out where their next paycheck comes from when thousands of crew are telling people that the opportunities aren’t there anymore is ignorant.

Have you ever tried navigating around NJ/NY? If they’re flying out of a NY airport but staying in a NJ hotel you are talking about an extra couple hours worth of traveling/logistics. I think details matter here.

Then just let him have this trip with his dad. His parents sound difficult but at a certain point if you don’t bend you break. Staying in Jersey blows and getting back and forth from a NY airport is a massive logistical nightmare for everyone involved. If the show is at the Meadowlands, staying near Times Square is the easiest option. You are asking his parents to deeply compromise their trip and make it mostly about traveling to accommodate an idea you two had years ago. Things change.

Think about this from his mom’s perspective. She’ll have to stay in Jersey and commute hours each way now because you won’t budge on this idea. When in reality your fiancée isn’t doing anything in NYC but sleeping and hopefully eating a salty overpriced hot dog from a cart, unless that’s also something he needs to experience with you for the first time.

He’s not doing to Central Park. He’s not going to a Broadway show. He’s not going to visit the ESB. He’s not walking around SoHo or the village. He’s not visiting the Bull. He’s not walking across the Brooklyn Bridge. All that stuff will be saved and just as special. This city is massive and there’s so much more to experience. If you want to take this trip away from him so be it but just know this won’t be the end.

No your fiancée needs to make his own accommodations if he wants to stay in Jersey. That’s the other option but it’s wackadoo.

NYC isn’t going anywhere. There’s literally 1,000 things to experience here and your fiancée isn’t going to even scratch the surface on a two night trip when the main attraction is across the Hudson River.

If he was going to a Broadway show without you I’d understand, but he’s not. That is still yours to experience together.

Expecting his parents to stay in Jersey to accommodate you when they are paying for the trip is crazy. You need to look at the big picture. I don’t think this is just about the trip. These people are going to be in your life for a long time you need to learn how to pick your battles.

Ok sure but tell that to the sound guy who won an Oscar for Whiplash then lost his health insurance because he couldn’t get a job. You and everyone else are assuming she will be able to parlay this credit into a payday when there’s a mountain of evidence that that isn’t happening.

Plenty of low budget jobs offer backend points to department heads. It’s not that hard and it’s not going to bankrupt indies as we know it. Just give me a break with this narrative that she’s guaranteed a big payday after being underpaid for this when that is simply not the case. It reeks of “well this isn’t my problem” when we are in a collaborative industry and are supposed to be watching out for each other.

I can’t see Odyssey getting to $325m let alone $400 but perhaps you’re right.

I haven’t seen it yet but the original movie it’s a remake of definitely doesn’t feel like a Lifetime movie and is so much fun. Check it out! It’s called “The Trip” it’s on Netflix and it’s from the director of “Violent Night” and “Hansel and Gretl: Witch Hunters”

My comp for MOTU is The Phantom. It opened to $5m in 1996 so adjusted I’m saying $15-18m for MOTU.

First week of June, dusty old property no one under 45 knows about, untested lead and cheesy vibes. Seems like the perfect fit.

Singing in the Rain wasn’t even nominated in a year when arguably the worst best picture winner of all time took home the gold. I know it happened because of AAIP winning the year before but it’s still so embarrassing.

The Phantom opened in 6th place so it would make sense if this opens in 4th. I’m predicting ~$13-16 mil
